Building insulation materials use for the purpose of energy saving. Insulation materials can be classified inorganic and organic insulation materials. Inorganic insulation is used for fire resistive performance parts and organic insulation is used for thermal performance parts. Meanwhile, organic insulation is due to toxic gas emission in fire. Inorganic insulation is too heavy and low thermal performance than organic materials. This study is focused on evaluation of the physical properties of inorganic foam material using industrial by-products such as waste glass powder and fly ash. From the test result, inorganic foam materials for the applicability of fire-resistance and insulation light-weight materials.
The research and development in soundproof materials for preventing noise have attracted great attention due to their social impact. Noise insulation materials are especially important in the field of soundproofing. Since the insulation ability of most materials follows a mass rule, the heavy weight materials like concrete, lead and steel board are mainly used in the current noise insulation materials. To overcome some weak points in these materials, fiber reinforced composite materials with lightweight and other high performance characteristics are now being used. In this paper, innovative insulation sheet materials with carbon and/or glass fabrics and nano-silica hybrid PU resin are developed. The parameters related to sound performance, such as materials and fabric texture in base fabric, hybrid method of resin, size of silica particle and so on, are investigated. At the same time, the wave analysis code (PZFlex) is used to simulate some of experimental results. As a result, it is found that both bundle density and fabric texture in the base fabrics play an important role on the soundproof performance. Compared with the effect of base fabrics, the transmission loss in sheet materials increased more than 10 dB even though the thickness of the sample was only about 0.7 mm. The results show different values of transmission loss factor when the diameters of silica particles in coating materials changed. It is understood that the effect of the soundproof performance is different due to the change of hybrid method and the size of silica particles. Fillers occupying appropriate positions and with optimum size may achieve a better effect in soundproof performance. The effect of the particle content on the soundproof performance is confirmed, but there is a limit for the addition of the fillers. The optimization of silica content for the improvement of the sound insulation effect is important. It is observed that nano-particles will have better effect on the high soundproof performance. The sound insulation effect has been understood through a comparison between the experimental and analytical results. It is confirmed that the time-domain finite wave analysis (PZFlex) is effective for the prediction and design of soundproof performance materials. Both experimental and analytical results indicate that the developed materials have advantages in lightweight, flexibility, other mechanical properties and excellent soundproof performance.

The insulation performance of the insulation currently used in building structures is reflected only during design based on initial performance and the reduction in heat insulation performance due to the degradation of long-term durability is not reflected. This study reviewed the degradation of heat insulation performance due to the durability degradation of insulating materials through the accelerated durability test. The study findings showed that the foamed polystyrene insulation bead method did not show performance degradation due to aging in the standard environmental condition and laboratory accelerated test condition but the performance is degraded in the freeze-thaw test condition. On the other hand, in the case of the extrusion method, the degradation of the heat insulation performance was less in the freeze-thaw test condition, but the rapid performance degradation was caused by the release of the internal gas at the beginning of aging. In addition, the hard polyurethane foam insulation showed better initial insulation performance than other insulation materials, but the performance was found to be degraded somewhat under laboratory accelerated test conditions and freeze-thaw test conditions.
Slabs prevent harmful effects of fire that may occur in any floor. However, it is necessary to protect the slabs from fire. Insulation materials may be appropriate to protect reinforced concrete (RC) slab from elevated temperature. In the present study, a model has been developed in artificial neural network (ANN) to predict the moment capacity ($M_r$) of RC slabs exposed to fire with insulation material. 672 data were obtained for ANN model through author's prepared program. Input layer in model consisted of seven input parameters; such as effective depth (d), ratio of d'/d, thermal conductivity coefficient ($k_{insulation}$), insulation materials thickness ($L_{insulation}$), reinforcement area ($A_{st}$), fire exposure time ($t_{\exp}$), and concrete compressive strength ($f_c$). The predicted $M_r$ by ANN was consistent with the obtained $M_r$ by author. It is proposed to ease computational complexity in determining $M_r$ using ANN. The effects of using insulation material on the moment capacity in RC slabs were also investigated. Insulating material with low thermal conductivity has been found to be more effective for durability to high temperature.

This study carried out to get some fundamental data for designing lightweight bedding. In This study, the wool blanket, polyester/cotton blended blanket and down quilt were manufactured with a varied materials, structural factors such as yam count, fabric density respectivelyarn. And also, the thermal insulation value of the bedding were measured by warmth retaining tester. In addition, this paper examines the influence of varying materials, structural factors and blanket layers on the thermal insulation effect of the bedding. The main results obtained from this study are as follow : 1. The design of lightweight blankets make an attempting with a varying materials and structural factors such as yam count, fabric densityarn. 2. Almost, the design of lightweight blankets for polyester/cotton blended blanket and down quilt make an attempting without reduction in thermal insulation values. 3. The 6 layers of blanket have less thermal insulation value than the 6 times of blanket for under a layer have. About 27~32% decrease is observed in thermal insulation value of blanket for under 6 layer. 4. The thermal insulation value and areal weight of blankets have a positive relation between the thermal insulation value(Y) and areal weight(X) is based on the following equation. wool blanket : Y = 1.0850X + 0.4188 (r = 0.9992) PIC blended blanket : Y = 0.8845X + 0.3034 (r = 0.9999)
The pros and cons of green building thermal insulation materials and systems have been reviewed from traditional thermal insulation materials such as mineral wool and polyurethane to new thermal insulation materials like VIP and aerogel and future insulating VIM and DIM. VIPs and aerogels with very low thermal conductivity can use for green buildings to significantly increase residential area by reducing energy consumption. Aerogels can be produced as not only opaque and but also translucent forms, thus enabling a wide range of possible building application. For building applications, there are many properties to consider like building site adaptability and mechanical strength, fire protection, cost and environmental impact.

A growing number of gas-insulated transformers in underground power substations in urban areas are approaching 20 years of operation, the time when failures begin to occur. It is thus essential to prevent failure through accurate condition diagnosis of the given facility. Various solid insulation materials exist inside of the transformers, and the generated decomposition gas may differ for each gas-insulated equipment. In this study, a simulation system was designed to analyze the deterioration characteristics of SF6 decomposition gas and insulation materials under the conditions of partial discharge and thermal fault for diagnosis of gas-insulated transformers. Degradation characteristics of the insulation materials was determined using an automatic viscometer and FT-IR. The analysis results showed that the pattern of decomposition gas generation under partial discharge and thermal fault was different. In particular, acetaldehyde was detected under a thermal fault in all types of insulation, but not under partial discharge or an arc condition. In addition, in the case of insulation materials, deterioration of the insulation itself rapidly progressed as the experimental temperature increased. It was confirmed that it was possible to diagnose the internal discharge or thermal fault occurrence of the transformer through the ratio and type of decomposition gas generated in the gas-insulated transformer.

Mineral hydrate is a new insulation material that compensates for the defects of existing materials. Mineral hydrate is made of inorganic ingredients; therefore, it is nonflammable. The porous structure of mineral hydrate makes the material lightweight and insulating. Mineral hydrate insulation and similar products have been studied and manufactured in Korea and abroad. However, these insulation materials need to improve in terms of strength. In this study, basalt fiber was used to enhance the strength. In order to observe the property changes, compressive strength, heat conductivity, and specific gravity were measured and XRD pattern analysis was performed. These tests confirmed that basalt fiber was effective at improving the strength and lowering the heat conductivity of mineral hydrate insulation.
Cryogenic insulation systems, with proper materials selection and execution, can offer the highest levels of thermal performance. Insulations are listed in order of increasing performance and, generally, in order of increasing cost. The specific insulation to be used for a particular application is determined through a compromise between cost, ease of application and the effectiveness of the insulation. Consequently, materials, representative test conditions, and engineering approach for the particular application are crucial to achieve the optimum result. The present work is based on energy cost balance for optimizing the thickness of insulated chambers, using foamed or multi layered cryogenic shell. The considered insulation is a uniformly applied outer layer whose thickness varies with the initial and boundary conditions of the studied vessel under steady-state radial heat transfer. An expression of the optimal insulation thickness derived from the total cost function and depending on the geometrical parameters of the container is presented.
