The data were collected from November 1 to November 14, 2008. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics. Results: Most home care facilities were situated in small or medium sized cities (46.8%, 56.6% respectively). About half of the nursing homes had 50-99 institutionalized persons (43.4~42.5%). Most of the nursing homes were operated by social welfare ownership. Average number of institutionalized persons was 41.7 and operation ratio of facilities was 93.9%. For severity of problems, 30% of institutionalized persons were assessed as third grade indicating mid-point severity. The average number of personnel was 18.6. The number of full-time positions was greater than that of part-time positions. The average income for the director was 2,600,000 Korean won, for nurses, 2,000,000, for social workers, 1,940,000, for physical therapists, 1,820,000, and for care workers, 1,560,000. Conclusion: Strategies need to be developed to maximize the value of the existing workforce without impacting on the quality of care delivered.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of aroma therapy and foot reflex massage on stress, depression, and sleep pattern of institutionalized elderly. The design of this study was non-equivalent control group pre-posttest design. The data were collected from February 24 to April 9 of 2005. Fifty-one elderly were divided into two groups, 26 institutionalized elderly for the experimental group and 25 institutionalized elderly for the control group. The experimental group underwent aromatherapy and foot reflex massage two days per week(40 minutes per session} over five weeks period. Stress(subjective stress and serum cortisol level), depression, and sleep pattern were assessed in both groups before and after intervention. Five weeks after intervention were spended, the experimental group was again assessed. Five weeks without intervention were spended, the control group was again assessed. The data were analyzed by the statistical program SPSS WIN 12. The results of this study were as follows; $\cdot$ Stress of the experimental group with the intervention was significantly lower than that of the control group. $\cdot$ Depression of the experimental group was significantly lower than that of the control group. $\cdot$ Sleep pattern of the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group. In conclusion, the aroma therapy and foot reflex massage program had positive effect on Institutionalized elderly's on stress(subjective stress and serum cortisol level), depression, and sleep pattern.
This study was designed to identify degrees of self-esteem instrumental activities of daily living and life satisfaction in the elderly and to investigate the relationship between these factors thus contributing to effective nursing interventions to promote quality of life for both noninstitutionalized and institutionalized elderly. The subjects for this study included 130 noninstitutionalized and institutionalized elderly. The data were collected through personal interviews using a questionnaire, the time being from August 25 to September 7, 1997. There was a significant positive correlation between self-esteem and IADL(${\gamma}$=.4028). self-esteem and life satisfaction(${\gamma}$=.6415). and IADL and life satisfaction(${\gamma}$=.3884) in the noninstitutionalized elderly(P<.001). and between self-esteem and life satisfaction(${\gamma}$=.3883, P<.001). IADL and life satisfation(${\gamma}$=.2501, P<.05) in the institutionalized elderly. 3. According to the general characteristics of the noninstitutionalized and institutionalized elderly : Self-Esteem of the noninstitutionalized elderly was significantly different. according to educational level(F=4.491, P=.031). job(F=2.53, P=.044). living expense load(F=2.861. P=.044). and self-esteem, and of the institutionalized elderly, it was significantly different according to educational level only (F=4.480, P=.006). IADL of the noninstitutionalized elderly was significantly different according to age(F=3.018, P=.021). living expense load(F=3.034. P=.033). pocket money(F=3.606. P=.010). and for the institutionalized elderly, it was significantly different according to age(F=2.899, P=.042), and religion(F=2.847, P=.044). Life Satisfaction of the noninstitutionaized elderly( F=2.718, P=.037) and instiutionalized elderly(F=3.165, P=.030) was significantly different according to pocket money.
Purpose: This study was performed to identify skin health status and the factors influencing skin hydration in the institutionalized elderly. Methods: The subjects were 139 elders living in 2 nursing homes in Seoul. Data for skin health status were collected by measurement of skin hydration, sebum, trans-epidermal water loss and pH using Corneometer, Sebumeter, Tewameter and Skin pH-meter on face, flank, arm and leg. Baseline data were collected by a structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed by SPSS/WIN 12.0 program. Results: Skin hydration and pH were relatively low especially on arms and legs but sebum and TEWL were not low, relatively. There were significant differences in skin health status according to gender, smoking, alcohol intake, and bath cleanser. There was significant positive correlation between skin-hydration and bath-time, TEWL and bath-frequency. Smoking, bath-cleanser, bath-time. pH and gender were identified as the significant influencing factors of skin hydration. Conclusion: Smoking, bath-time and pH need to be considered as important control factors for increasing skin health status in the institutionalized elderly.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the factors of health-related quality of life in older adults according to the type of residency. Methods: A cross-sectional comparative study was conducted. The subjects were 114 institutionalized older adults and 99 community dwelling older adults. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews by nurses using structured questionnaires composed of SF-36 (ver.2) and CGA-SF. Results: The institutionalized older adults had more health problems and experienced lower quality of life compared to community dwelling older adults. Factors influencing health-related quality of life for institutionalized older adults were social support, educational level, and ADL, which explained about 25.7% of the total variance, while thoseof community dwelling older adults were IADL, experiencing fall, and weight loss, which had explanatory power of 31.8%. Conclusion: These results indicate that differentiated nursing strategies according to the type of residency are required to promote health-related quality of life for older adults.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of ego?identity and rare teacher's emotional support on the value of sexuality of institutionalized adolescents. The subjects were 102 middle school adolescents in Daegu and Cyeongsangbuk Province, Korea. Ego-identity of the institutional youth, perceived emotional support of care teacher and sexual values reported by the institutionalized adolescents. The data were analyzed with an AMOS 5.5 Program by comparative fit index and a SPSS Win program 12.0 using cronbach's $\alpha$, simple regression, hierarchical multiple regression and path analysis. The findings showed that both the degree of ego-identity and perceived emotional support of care teacher exerted a significant effect on the sexual values of institutional youth. Furthermore, it is important to note that the care teacher's emotional support influenced sexual values of the youth, and was mediated by the ego-identity of the institutional youth.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of Lavender inhalation on sleep, depression and stress of institutionalized elderly. Methods: The methods used in the study follows a non-equivalent pre- and post-test design. 39 institutionalized elderly were recruited using a convenient sampling method that assigned them to the experimental or the control group. The experimental group were then provided with essential Lavender oil, as part of the aroma inhalation intervention, to inhale before sleeping for 7 days. The collected data were analysed with SPSS 18.0 (windows program), using frequency percentage (%), a Chi-square test and an independent t-test. Results: The results were that the experimental group had significantly higher sleep status scores(t=5.195, p=.000), and lower depression scores (t=-5.479, p=.000), physical stress scores (t=-5.741, p=.000) and psychological stress scores (t=-4.233, p=.000) than those in the control group. Conclusion: This study suggests that aroma inhalation, as part of aroma therapy, be applied and comprehensively adopted as a method of nursing intervention for improvement of sleep, depression and stress for institutionalized elderly.
Purpose: In this study, we attempted to provide an evidence for the effects of meridian acupressure on relieving and preventing constipation in the institutionalized elderly. Methods: The research design was a non-equivalent control group, non-synchronized design. The subjects consisted of 31 institutionalized elderly (experimental group: 16, control group: 15). The experimental group was given meridian acupressure for 10 minutes daily for 2 weeks. The data was analyzed by the ${\chi}^2$-test, Fisher's exact test, t-test and repeated measures ANOVA. Results: The number of bowel movements per week of the experimental and control group performed meridian acupressure verified by repeated-measures analysis of variance revealed that interaction existed between the meridian acupressure availability and the measurement point (F=98.183, p<.001). Repeated measures analysis of variance to compare the changes in Bristol stool form scale scores of the experimental and control group performed meridian acupressure revealed that interaction existed between the meridian acupressure availability and the measurement point (F=48.896, p<.001). Conclusion: The results of this study show the meridian acupressure is a useful nursing intervention on constipation in the institutionalized elderly.
