  • Computer simulations of a pdp discharges provide unique information necessary for their analysis, unavailable otherwise. Statistical instability of the ramp discharge and the role of exoemission, nature of striations during sustain discharge, physical mechanism responsible for the propagation of the cathode ionization wave, and line loading effects are just a few examples when simulations can be successfully used.

  • This paper presents the state of the art of control strategies for bilateral teleoperation systems under time delays. In the bilateral teleoperation that has force feedback, the time delay in the communication channel is the main source of instability. To cope with this problem. a number of control methods have been proposed. Among many control strategies. key aspects of the recent passivity-based methods are mainly summarized for approaches with wave variables. PO/PC (passivity observer/passivity controller), simple PD, and energy bounds.

  • An axisymmetric supersonic screeching jet is numerically simulated to examine the length scales of screech frequency as well as screech tone generation mechanism. The axisymmetric Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations in conjuction with a modified Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model are employed. It is demonstrated that the axisymmetric jet screech tones can be simulated correctly and the numerical results are in good agreement with the experimental data. Instability waves, shock-cell structures and the phenomena of shock motion are investigated in detail to identify the screech tone generation mechanism. Shock spacings and standing wave length are analyzed to determine the dominent length scale crucial to the screech frequency formulation.

  • Turbulent airflow in channels of rectangular cross section with symmetric centerbodies is studied numerically. Shock wave configurations formed in the channel and in front of the entrance are examined. Solutions of the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are obtained with finite-volume solvers of second-order accuracy. The solutions demonstrate an expulsion/swallowing of the shocks with variations of the free-stream Mach number or angle of attack. Effects of the centerbody length and thickness on the shock wave stability and flow bifurcation are examined. Bands of the Mach number and angle of attack, in which there exist non-unique flow fields, are identified.

  • Supernova remnants (SNRs) are one of the most energetic astrophysical events and are thought to be the dominant source of Galactic cosmic rays (CRs). A recent report on observations of gamma rays from the vicinity of SNRs have shown strong evidence that Galactic CR protons are accelerated by the shock waves of the SNRs. The actual gamma-ray emission from pion decay should depend on the diffusion of CRs in the interstellar medium. In order to quantitatively analyze the diffusion of high-energy CRs from acceleration sites, we have performed test particle numerical simulations of CR protons using a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulation of an interstellar medium swept-up by a blast wave. We analyse the CRs diffusion at a length scale of order a few pc, and show the Richtmeyer-Meshkov instability can provide enough turbulence downstream of the shock to make the diffusion coefficient close to the Bohm level for energy larger than 30 TeV for a realistic interstellar medium.

  • A metallic bond of great strength for the same or dissimilar metals can be produced by the explosive welding. The formation of a metallic jet at the interface between the two impacting plates has been simulated using the numerical hydrocode DYNA2D. The mechanism of explosive welding for the wave formation is also analyzed by the computer simulation technique. The microscopic with the experimentally observed behaviour of the explosive welding. The computer simulations of the explosive welding process have proven especially useful for analyzing the mechanism of metallic bones.

  • Backhole, which is one of geometric parameters in swirl coaxial injectors, is found to affect the inner flow motion and the acoustic characteristics of the swirl injector. In order to analyze the effect of the backhole as a damping device such as acoustic cavities of the combustion chamber, it was regarded as a Helmholtz or Quarter-wave resonator. As a result, it is known that the swirl coaxial injector with the backhole may produce the resonant frequency coincided with the frequency of the combustion chamber.

  • The primary aim of the paper is to solve an unstable axisymmetric initial value problem of wave propagation when given initial data that is deteriorated by noise such as measurement error. To overcome the instability of the problem, Tikhonov's regularization, known as a non-iterative numerical regularization method, is introduced to solve the problem. The L-curvecriterion is introduced to find the optimal regularization parameter for the solution. It is confirmed that fairly stable solutions are realized and that they are accurate when compared to the exact solution.

  • Nonlinear parabolized stability equations for compressible flow in general curvilinear coordinate system are derived to deal with a broad range of transition prediction problems on complex geometry. A highly accurate finite difference PSE code has been developed using an implicit marching procedure. Blasius flow is tested. The results of the present computation show good agreement with DNS data. Nonlinear interaction can make the T-S fundamental wave more unstable and the onset of its amplitude decay is shifted downstream relative to linear case. For nonlinear calculations, rather small difference in initial amplitude can produce large change during nonlinear region. Compressible secondary instability at Mach number 1.6 is also simulated and showed that 1.1% initial amplitude for primary mode is enough to trigger the secondary growth.

  • An adaptive signal processing technique is implemented for the active noise cancellation of the plane acoustic wave propagating in a duct. To avoid the instability caused by the acoustic feedback from the control speaker to the detect microphone, an off-line modeling of the acoustic feedback plant is done using the FIR filter. Auxiliary path required for the filtered-x LMS algorithm is modeled as well. Before going into the experiments, a simulation is carried out under the same conditions with experiments. The simulation shows that the longer the length of the adaptive filter is, the better the results are achieved. Experiments have been carried out at lower audio frequency range (50 - 400Hz), and the results are in good agreements with those of simulation study. As a results of this adaptive noise control, around 50dB is reduced for a pure tone noise, and for a bandlimited noise with the bandwidth of 316Hz, a maximum of 30dB noise reduction is attained.
