  • Reducing the level of stress and insomnia by aromatherapy is proposed as a method of self-care and health promotion in the future. Of the people who received aromatherapy from July, 1999 to February, 2000 at the Complementary and Alternative Medicine Center at the Gyeongu City Health Center, 48 people agreed to participate in a questionnaire survey, presented before and after their aromatherapy, and the data were analyzed. When the people received aromatherapy at the Complementary and Alternative Medicine Center, they inhaled the aroma from a vaporizer and when at home, they inhaled from a tissue, gauze or washbowl. Two sessions per week (2 hrs./session) were provided at the Center in the total 1-month duration of the therapy. The oil made from a blend of clarysage, geranium, rose at a ratio of 3:2:1 was used for relieving stress, and the oil made from a blend of clarysage, lavender, and lemon at 2:2:1 ratio was used for relieving insomnia. The scores of stress of 92.5 17.5 points before aromatherapy significantly reduced to $87.4{\pm}4.2$ points after therapy(p<0.01), and the scores of insomnia of $2.5{\pm}1.2$ points before aromatherapy significantly reduced to $1.0{\pm}1.1$ points after therapy(p<0.01). The reduction in stress and insomnia from aromatherapy was more significant in those who were experiencing high levels of stress and insomnia. Therefore, stress and its related insomnia can be effectively relieved with proper application of aromatherapy. With benefits such as little side-effects, convenient and simple education, low cost, and the do-it-yourself feature. aromatherapy can be expanded into a self-management program for promoting health of the community people.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the difference of subjective daytime sleepiness level between primary insomnia patients and healthy control subjects. We also investigated the relationship between subjective daytime sleepiness level and variables of nocturnal polysomnograghic sleep architecture of insomnia patients. Method: Total subjects were 87 patients with primary insomnia diagnosed with polysomnography and 88 normal controls. The daytime sleepiness level in each group was measured by Korean version of Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). The correlations of ESS score and nocturnal polysomnographic variables were calculated in the patient group. Results: Patients with insomnia had the lower ESS scores than the control group. In patients group, the ESS score showed significant negative correlations with total sleep time, sleep efficiency%, and stage 2 sleep time%. The ESS score also showed significant positive correlations with number of awakenings, number of awakenings more than 2 minutes, and wake after sleep onset time. Conclusions: Insomnia patients showed lower level of subjective daytime sleepiness that may indicate their higher alertness comparing to control subjects. Daytime sleepiness of patients with insomnia was associated with polysomnographic variables including total sleep time, sleep efficiency%, stage 2 sleep time% and disrupted continuity of nocturnal sleep.

  • Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the prevalence and related factors of sleep-wake disturbance (SWD) in Korean post-stroke patients. This study was the first to address post-stroke SWD in Korea using a structured questionnaire. Method: We investigated the prevalence of SWD and related factors including lesion location, stroke severity, presence of depression and fatigue. We assessed sleep-wake pattern including quality of sleep, sleep latency, wake episodes, wake time after sleep onset, daytime sleep episode and sleep time at daytime. Ninety stroke patients admitted to a university affiliated hospital in Seoul between the period September 2008 and January 2009 were included in the study. Result: Thirty five patients (38.9%) complained insomnia and 32 (35.6%) complained excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS). Quality of sleep (p=.000), sleep latency (p=.000) and total sleep time (p=.001) were significantly poorer in 16 patients with both insomnia and EDS than in the others. The related factors to insomnia were level of education (p=.030), depression (p=.007) and fatigue (p=.034), though related factors to EDS were stroke onset time (p=.049), stroke severity (p=.005), motor dysfunction (p=.035), dysphasia (p=.018), fatigue (p=.001) and lesion location (p=.019). Conclusion: Sleep-wake disturbance is a common problem in Korean stroke patients. Strategies to improve quality of sleep are urgently needed in the post-stroke patients.

The results of Sanjoin-Tang(酸棗仁湯) treatments show as follows: Change of total amount of sleep showed 1.75±2.23 hours of increase.(p-value=0.001, respectively) Change of average delaying bedtime before and after the treatment showed 1.57±2.50 hours of decrease.(p-value=0.001, respectively) Change of average bedtime arousal before and after the treatment showed 0.96±1.46 times of decrease. (p-value=0.004, respectively) Change of sleep quality after the treatment has improved. According to statistical results, Sanjoin-Tang(酸棗仁湯) has proven effective for reducing sleep disorders, and this, restoring normal sleep patterns.

In this case, a male patient was diagnosed tics disorder at 8 years old. He has suffered for 15 years and his symptom was simple motor tics of neck, both arms and both legs, not vocal tics. So we diagnosed him as the chronic tic disorder. The severity score headache was assessed using the Visual Analog Scales. The severity score tics was assessed at baseline using the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS) and we compared score of before with after treatment. We treated him with oriental medication( herbal medicine, acupuncture, cry cupping) and progressive muscle relaxation. After this treatment, chronic insomnia and extreme headache were disappeard and the symptoms of tics were mildly decreased.

  • Purpose: This study was to examine the effects of sleep promoting program on sleep and the immune response in the elderly with insomnia. Methods: The study was designed as a quasi-experimental, nonequivalent control group pre-post test design. Thirty two elders who suffered from insomnia (16 experimental and 16 control subjects) were selected among the elders who had been enrolled in two churches. The subjects in the experimental group participated in a sleep promoting program which was composed of sleep hygiene education and progressive muscle relaxation for 4 weeks. Data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN. Results: The experimental group showed higher sleep score than that of the control group (t=7.86, p=.00). The experimental group showed higher sleep satisfaction score than that of the control group (t=7.61, p=.00). The sleep promoting program was not effective in enhancing immune response. Conclusion: The sleep promoting program increased the sleep score, sleep-satisfaction score and B cell in immune response of elderly people suffering from insomnia. Therefore, sleep promoting program can be applied as an effective nursing intervention to promote sleep quality and sleep satisfaction.

  • The study sample consisted of 40 people who were complaining of current insomnia. The study groups were classified according to their age and gender, each containing 5 males and 5 females in the same age group. All the subjects were measured for heart rate (HR) and complicated degree. 1. In the 20's age group, the complicated degree of the female subjects is found to be much less than that of the males, suggesting that the pathology of insomnia would be more serious in the young females. 2. In the 30's age group, the complicated degree of both genders are decreased but there is no significant discrepancy between the reduced complicated degree. 3. In the 40's age group, the complicated degree of both genders are decreased but there is no significant discrepancy between the reduced complicated degree. 4. In the 50's age group, the complicated degree of both genders are decreased, however the females with postmenopausal conditions show much more reduction in the complicated degree, compared to the male group.
