Agriculture in Bangladesh is slowly transforming to the production of high-value fruit and vegetable crops to satisfy the nutrient requirements of their large size population, and this transformation is creating new challenges as regards improving and maintaining the productivity and crop quality. The country has a declining trend of insect pollinators due to habitat loss, land use changes, monoculture-dominated agriculture, and the excessive and indiscriminate use of pesticides. Such pollinator deficiencies can cause reduced yields, thereby threatening the subsistence of marginal farmers. In Bangladesh, growers enjoy free pollination services from the naturally occurring insect populations. While honeybees pollinate mustard, onions, and melons, many other hymenopterans, coleopterans, hemipterans, dipterans, and thysanopterans also visit the crop fields, making these insects significant for the food security, environment, and economy of the nation. Therefore, attention should be given to public policy, research, and human resource development that promotes knowledge and appreciation of the conservation and utilization of insect pollinators.

Background: References to insects in myths, stories, and idioms can be found in almost any culture, but with regard to references involving honey bee species in the Asia-Australian region, little information is available. Such references to bees can be highly informative by revealing attitudes of admiration, fear, ignorance, or even revulsion towards these insects. Results: The subject is briefly reviewed and examples of references to bees of selected cultural communities are given. Although folkloristic references to honey bees were found to be mostly positive highlighting fearlessness, cleverness, and industriousness of the bees, some also touch upon their ability to cause pain. Conclusions: Owing to the decreasing contacts and increasing alienization regarding insects generally, a plea is made to collect whatever information is still available about references to bees in songs, myths, stories, proverbs, and idioms and to compare such uses from different regions, e.g., North and South Korea. This would support other fields of research aiming to discover and to describe cultural relationships, migrations, and contacts between different peoples of the Asian/Australian region.

본 연구는 산림경관의 현재수준을 평가하여 일련의 등급으로 구분하고 각 상황에 부합하는 관리전략을 수립, 실행할 수 있도록 평가지표를 개발하고자 수행되었다. 이를 위해 전문가를 대상으로 심층인터뷰 및 이메일설문조사 등의 정성적, 정량적 연구방법을 적용하여 과학적이며 객관적인 산림경관평가지표를 개발하고자 하였다. 전문가 의견수렴 결과 도출한 최종 산림경관등급화 평가지표는 '생태적 건강성'(녹지자연도, 생태자연도, 병 해충 피해수준, 수관활력도), '경관성'(자연성, 조화성, 다양성, 전통성, 심미성, 희귀성), '민감도'(관광휴양이용수준), '방해요소'(훼손지, 인공구조물) 등의 4개 범주, 총 13개 지표가 선정되었다. 또한 산림경관 평가 등급의 수는 5개로 구분하는 것이 가장 적절한 것으로 조사되었다.
