Objectives: The present study reports case of an elderly kwashiorkor patient who was treated with Korean Medicine. Methods: A 68-year-old female patient with weight loss, general weakness, chills, anorexia, and dizziness after over 100 episodes of diarrhea visited the hospital. Blood tests showed hypoalbuminemia and anemia, and ultrasonography revealed fatty liver disease. The patient was diagnosed with kwashiorkor, and her symptom differentiation was Yang deficiency followed by Both Qi-Blood deficiency. Sayeok-Tang, Soshiho-Tang, Insamyangyeong-Tang, and Gongjin-Dan, herbal drugs, were given to the patient during 40 days of hospitalization. Results: After 40 days of hospitalization, her symptoms were reduced, and the blood test results improved. Conclusion: This case presents the therapeutic potential of Korean medicine in the treatment of kwashiorkor.

Objectives: This paper aims to report the effects of Korean medical treatment on three patients who underwent thyroid lobectomy for thyroid cancer. Methods: Three patients were hospitalized at hospital to treat pain and general weakness after thyroid lobectomy. The patients took Korean medical treatment including herbal medicine and acupuncture. Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) of symptoms was measured every morning. Results: After the treatment, the pain and general weakness following surgery decreased, and general conditions improved. Conclusions: This cases show that Korean medical treatment is effective for a patients who underwent thyroid lobectomy for thyroid cancer.

Objectives: This paper aims to report the effects of Korean medical treatment on a patient who underwent abdominal surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for ovarian cancer. Methods: An ovarian cancer patient underwent abdominal surgery and got Korean medical treatment during 7-day hospitalization. About 2 years later, with metastasis to the lymph nodes detected, she had abdominal surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy and got Korean medical treatment during 10-day hospitalization. The treatment included herbal medicine and acupuncture. Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) of symptoms was measured every morning. Results: After the treatment, sequela following surgery decreased, and general conditions improved. During 1st and 2nd hospitalization, NRS of general weakness, heartburn and dorsal chill significantly decreased (10 to 5, 10 to 5 and 10 to 2, respectively) while edema in both legs remained the same. Conclusions: This case shows that Korean medical treatment is effective for a patient who underwent abdominal surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for ovarian cancer.

As society ages, the seriousness of Parkinson's disease in the elderly increases. This study was performed in order to evaluate the effect of Korean medical treatments on Parkinson's symptoms. An elderly patient was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease by clinical symptoms, which were resting tremor, pill-rolling tremor and mild bradykinesia. We treated her disease with Korean medical treatment, including herbal medicine and acupuncture therapy and excluding western medication. For the herbal medicine, Insamyangyeong-tang (人參養榮湯), Bobi-tang (補脾湯), Dokhwaljihwang-tang (獨活地黃湯) and Sipimijihwang-tang (十二味地黃湯) were primarily used. In result, the clinical symptoms, measured by unified Parkinson's disease rating scale (UPDRS) and modified Hoehn and Yahr stage (H-Y stage), of Parkinson's disease in this patient had improved after the Korean medical treatment. This study suggests that Korean medical treatments can be applicable to improve symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease.
