Results of free and bound myo-inositol in infant formula (IF) are presented. Inositol was analyzed by HILIC ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometer. The levels of free myo-inositol in 27 Australian and 4 EU originated IF samples were 300-600 mg/kg of powder or 1.6-3.1 mg/100 kJ. The amount of bound inositol in lipid fraction of IF was, on average, 10% of free myo-inositol.
Four stereoisomers of inositol p-aminosalicylate, that is hexaris-O-(p-aminosalicylyl)-myo-inositol, hexaris-O-(p-aminosalicylyl)-muco-inositol were synthesized by p-aminosalicylyl chloride with myo-, epi-, scyllo-, and muco-inositol respectively. Their antibacterial activity was tested against human type tubercle bacilli $H_{37}$/Rv, in contrast to 1.25.gamma./ml of p-aminosalicylic acid used as control. Hexaris-O-(p-aminoslicylyl)-muco-inositol showed the strongest antibacterial action at 0.625.gamma./ml, the other compounds more or less active than p-aminosalicylic acid.
(1,2). We evaluated the effects of the substrate and inhibitors related to phosphatidylinositol metabolism on in vitro maturation and fertilization of porcine oocytes. Cumulus-oocyte complexes were cultured in mTLP-PVA medium supplemented with or without inositol (250 mM) fur 46h. Subsequently, these oocytes were inseminated with fresh boar semen in mTALP-PVA medium for 6h. At 6h after insemination, oocytes were cultured for further 12 h in TCM-199 supplemented with 10% FBS (fetal bovine serum). The higher percentage of oocytes in inositol-supplemented medium reached metaphase of the second meiotic division compared to those in control (81.4% vs. 67.3%; P<0.()5). following 18 h of insemination, more number of male pronuclei were formed in the oocytes matured in inositol-supplemented medium than in those of control experiment (42.0% vs. 27.3%; P<0.05). When oocytes were cultured in medium with 10mM LiCl (chloride lithium) or 0.5mM dbcAMP (dibutyryl cyclic adenosine monophosphate) to determine the role of inositol on the maturation of oocytes, these two drugs inhibited the meiotic division of oocytes (P<0.05). However, addition of inositol to the culture medium did overcome the inhibitory effect of these drugs on the oocyte maturation. DbcAMP and verapamil supplemented synergistically arrested the meiotic division of oocytes. Addition of verapamil did not inhibit germinal vesicle breakdown, but it severly inhibited the second meiotic division of oocytes. These results suggest that inositol exert its improving effects on maturation, by activating the PI (phosphatidylinositol) cycle and causing beneficial changes in both cytoplasm and membrane of oocytes.

The inositol polyphosphates are a group of multifunctional signaling metabolites whose synthesis is catalyzed by a family of inositol kinases that are evolutionarily conserved from yeast to humans. Inositol polyphosphate multikinase (IPMK) was first identified as a subunit of the arginine-responsive transcription complex in budding yeast. In addition to its role in the production of inositol tetrakis- and pentakisphosphates ($IP_4$ and $IP_5$), IPMK also exhibits phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3-kinase) activity. Through its PI3-kinase activity, IPMK activates Akt/PKB and its downstream signaling pathways. IPMK also regulates several protein targets non-catalytically via protein-protein interactions. These non-catalytic targets include cytosolic signaling factors and transcription factors in the nucleus. In this review, we highlight the many known functions of mammalian IPMK in controlling cellular signaling networks and discuss future challenges related to clarifying the unknown roles IPMK plays in physiology and disease.

Inositol and phytic acid extracted from rice bran were investigated for applying cosmetics. Skin lotions containing $0{\~}3.0\;wt\%$ inositol and $0{\~}1.50\;wt%$ phytic acid were applied respectively, to the arm skins of 45 Asian women 20'~40's for 7 weeks. Improvement on moisture was evaluated. In addition, improvements on sebum, elasticity, and wrinkle were examined after applying placebo, inositol and phytic acid-containing skin lotions tot face, respectively. For $1.0\;wt\%$ inositol, it resulted in $19\%$ increase of moisture. The wrinkle reduction and elasticity improved $12.4%\;and\;17.0\%$ on average, respec-tively. Applying $0.5\;wt\%$ phytic acid resulted in $71.6\%$ increase the moisture. Improvements on wrinkle and elasticity were $16.9%\;and\;21.9\%$ respectivelv. hpplving inositol or phytic acid regardless of dry or oily skin, resulted in sebum value recovery to that of the normal skin after 2~4 weeks. Although inositol is inferior to phytic acid in improvements of the skin, phytic acid is not suitable to sensitive skin. So, $0~0.50\;wt\%$ of phytic acid were added to $1.0\;wt\%$ inositol and similar experiments were carried out. In case of added $1.0\;wt\%$ phytic acid, moisture increased $63.8\%$ approximately. Improvements on elasticity and reduction on wrinkle were $17.2%\;and\;17.4\%,$ respectively. Both skin types were turned to normal skin type after 2 weeks. It could improve the skin condition when used inositol added phytic acid. The optimized concentration of phytic acid was $0.10\;wt\%\;with\;1.0\;wt\%$ of inositol without side effect.
Inositol and phytic acic extracted from rice bran were investigated for applying cosmetics. This study was carried out to investigate the effect of morphology of oocytes, kinds of media, cysteine and myo-inositol supplementation on IVM rate of porcine oocytes. Cumulus- enclosed oocytes were incubated in maturation NCSU-23 and TCM-199 medium with supplementation with 3, 5, 10, 20 mM myo-inositol and 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0 mM cysteine. 1. When classified by morphology, excellent, good and fair of cumulus-enclosed oocytes were incubated for 48 hrs and the IVM rate were $14.2{\pm}3.7%{\sim}58.7{\pm}4.0%$, respectively. The rate were greater in oocytes with excellent cumulus cells than those without cumulus cells. 2. The IVM rate of oocytes cultured in TCM-199 and NCSU- 23 medium supplementation or non-supplementation with 1.0 mM myo-inositol were $7.5{\pm}4.5%,\;45.0{\pm}4.8%\;and\;4.4%,\;42.5{\pm}4.2%,\;18.0{\pm}5.2%$, respectively. Supplementation with myo-inositol significantly increased the IVM rate of oocytes. 3. The IVM rate of oocytes cultured in NCSU-23 medium supplementation of 3, 5, 10, 20 mM myo-inositol for 48 hrs were $47.5{\pm}4.5%,\;57.5{\pm}4.2%,\;62.5{\pm}4.9%,\;50.0{\pm}5.2%$, respectively. The IVM rate of oocytes in NCSU-23 medium supplemented with 10 mM myo-inositol were significantly increased compared to control ($42.5{\pm}4.0%$). 4. The IVM rate of oocytes cultured for 48 hrs in NCSU-23 media supplement with 0.3, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 mM myo-inositol were $50.0{\pm}4.5%,\;62.5{\pm}4.2%,\;52.5{\pm}4.9%,\;45.0{\pm}4.2%$, respectively. The IVM rate of oocytes in NCSU-23 medium supplemented with 10 mM cysteine were significantly increased compared to control ($42.5{\pm}4.0%$).
myo-Inositol, a growth factor for Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae), has been known to be incorporated into phosphatidylinositol (PI), which is a kind of phospholipid in the cell membrane, by a membrane-associated PI-synthesizing enzyme. The deficiency of myo-inositol in S. cerevisiae adversely affected the membrane structure and function. On the basis of biochemical functions of myo-inositol, the effect of deficiency of myo-inositol on the aerobic glucose metabolism was investigated by measuring specific oxygen uptake rate (Q$_{O2}$) used as an indicator representing the respiratory capacity of S. cerevisiae in batch and continuous cultures. The respiratory capacity of aerobic glucose metabolism in S. cerevisiae was also monitored after glucose pulse-addition in a continuous culture (D=0.2, 1/hr), in which glucose was utilized through respiratory metabolism. The deficiency of myo-inositol was found to lead to both the decrease of the maximum specific oxygen uptake rate (Q$_{O2max}$) observed from the batch as well as in the continuous culture experiment and the decrease of the respiratory capacity of aerobic glucose metabolism of S. cerevisiae determined from the glucose pulse-addition experiment, in which the glucose flux into respiratory and fermen- tative metabolism was quantitatively analyzed.
