  • Mineralization of organic N is an important factor in determining the appropriate rate for organic waste application to cropland. The mineralization of organic N was examined using sandy soil amended with three kind of compost (municipal solid waste+biosolid, yard trimmings, yard trimmings+biosolid), respectively. During the 12-week incubation, the mineralization of organic N was determined by analyzing the inorganic N in leachates from unamended and amended soils. Soils amended with com posts made of biosolid had higher initial $NH_4-N$ concentration than unamended soil. Soil amended with compost made of yard trimmings only had slightly lower initial inorganic N concentration than unamended soil. In the soil amended with com post made of yard trimmings+biosolid, however, nitrification rate was enhanced in the first week of incubation. Net N mineralization and nitrification were positive in all treatments. Although the greatest net N mineralization occurred in the soil amended with compost made of yard trimmings+biosolid, the greatest net mineralization and nitrification rates occurred in unamended soil.

  • Diphosil, a new version of the organic-inorganic composite resin developed by ANL has a structure of the chelating diphosphonic acid groups grafted to a silica support. To apply Diphosil for the treatment of liquid radioactive waste from nuclear power plants, the adsorption equilibrium and column experiments were carried out for the main radionuclides, $^{137}Cs\;and\;^{60}Co$, in the liquid radwaste stream. Through the adsorption equilibrium experiments, the removal efficiencies of $^{137}Cs\;and\;^{60}Co$, and the effects of non-radioactive ions on the removal efficiency have been measured in various conditions using radiotracers. The breakthrough curves for the tested tracers were obtained from the laboratory scale column tests using the simulated liquid radioactive waste. In addition, the removal capacity of Diphosil is compared with that of Amberlite IRN 77 resin, generally used in nuclear power plants.

  • Papermaking reconstituted tobacco is an important strategy for recycling the waste tobacco residues. To indentify the influences of the inorganic components on harmful components delivery in cigarette smoke, a self-made electrodialysis stack was assembled to desalt the tobacco extract. The influences of the applied current and extract content on the removal rate of the inorganic ions were investigated. Results indicated that the applied current was a dominant impact on the desalination performance. High currents lower than the limiting current density could accelerate the desalting efficiency but cause higher energy consumption. A current of 2 A, or current density of ${\sim}11mA{\cdot}cm^{-2}$, was an optimal choice by considering both the energy consumption and desalting efficiency. A 20% tobacco extract was an appropriate content for the electrodialysis process. More than 90% of inorganic ions could be removed under the optimum condition. The preliminary result indicated that removal of inorganic components was beneficial to decrease the harmful component delivery in cigarette smoke. Naturally, ED is an environmentally friendly and high-effective technology for desalting the tobacco extract.

  • The environmental conditions in smallholder dairy farms especially the effects of dairy wastes on waters and soil were the main objectives of this investigation. Forty-three dairy farms from an older dairy cooperative (Nongpho Dairy Cooperative, NP) were compared with four dairy fauns from relatively new dairy cooperative (Kamphaengsaen Dairy Cooperative, KS) for the quality parameters of water and soil samples during a 12-month period. Forty-three farms at NP were from three geographical areas and three levels farm crowdedness. The results from this study clearly showed that the waste waters from older dairy barns contained much higher levels of organic and inorganic substances which could create environmental pollution if not properly managed. The differences in waste water qualities due to areas and seasons were not significant, while waste water samples from crowded farms tended to contain higher averages of waste water parameters such as COD and BOD. Highly significant correlations between pairs of waste water parameters indicated that certain parameters can be used without the need for chemical analysis of some other parameters. The qualities of well water on dairy farms as well as water samples from public waterways nearby indicated some contamination of dairy wastes such as manure. Storage and sun-drying of dairy manure on bare soil surface could result in the contamination of underground water and nearby water sources. Some recommendations from this study if implemented can prevent environmental pollution in smallholder dairy farms.

  • There is an increasing interest in the use of electrochemical methods for the animal waste treatment The technologies using the electrochemical method provide ideal tools for approaching industrial and animal wastes problems. Unlike other chemical treatments, the electrochemical systems do not make the volume of the secondary waste increase. The electrochemical methods can be operated with electrochemical apparatus and inorganic agent allow selective separation and recovery and even quieter than others. This study concerns design factors, electrode construction and wastewater treatment process of the electrochemical apparatus. The experiment of color, COD and BOD removal is much effective in using electrochemical method with ultrasonication and ozonation.

  • The swine waste industry is growing rapidly along with the world human population. The trend is toward more concentrated piggeries with numbers of herds in the thousands. Associated with these increased herds are large quantities of wastes, including organic matter, inorganic nutrients, and gaseous emissions. The trend in swine waste management is toward treatment of these wastes to minimize negative impact on the health and comfort of workers and animals and the atmosphere, water, and soil environments. Treatment of these wastes has traditionally involved land application, lagoons, oxidation ditches, and conventional batch and continuously stirred reactor designs. More sophisticated treatment systems are being implemented, involving advanced anaerobic digester designs, integrated with solids separation, aerobic polishing of digester effluents, and biological nutrient removal. This review discusses the present and future role of anaerobic processes in piggery waste treatment with emphasis on reactor design, operating and performance parameters, and effluent processing.

  • In this study, using Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GBFS), an industrial byproduct, and Phosphogypsum (PG), and Waste Lime (WL) as activator, non-sintering binder (NSB) which does not require a sintering process was produced, and the chemical penetration resistance was evaluated through a seawater resistance experiment. The result of the experiment showed that the inside of NSB mortar saw almost no influence from the ions in seawater due to its dense structure. Also, as it appears that only the surface reacts with ions in seawater while spreading inward is suppressed, the high seawater resistance of NSB could be confirmed.

  • effectiveness of the PAM graphite-electrode technology for the treatment of many types of low-level radioactive waste including : combustible material, solidified resins in cement, inorganic materials, steel, glass, and solidified boric acid cement. The objectives of PAM-200 evaluation were to verify that 1) the facility meets air emission regulations, 2) the facility can be safely operated when processing hazardous and radioactive materials and 3) satisfactory final waste forms can be produced. Results, derived from KAERI's(Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) analyses for samples of vitrified product, scrubbing solution and offgas collected during test period, show that PAM-200 can treat radioactive wastes as well as hazardous wastes with toxic constituents and radionuclides contained in the offgas exiting from the stack to the environment controlled to be far lower than the limit regulated by air conservation law and atomic law.
