  • In this study, we investigated the effects of dissolved inorganic and organic nutrient on the growth of dinoflagellate Alexandrium affine (LIMS-PS-2345). The maximum uptake rates (ρmax) and half saturation constants (Ks) calculated from the uptake kinetics experiment were 77.0 pmol/cell/hr, 17.6 μM for nitrate and 15.5 pmol/cell/hr, 3.88 μM for phosphate, respectively. These results suggested that this species has high inorganic nutrient demand and a low affinity for inorganic nutrients. During the utilization of organic nutrients for A. affine, growth rates of experimental groups added by organic nitrogen (urea and glycine) and phosphorus (adenosine triphosphate and glycerol phosphate) were above 70 %, compared to the experimental groups added by inorganic nutrients. Thus, A. affine may need to utilize organic nutrients to understand the dominant strategy and advantageous position in the interspecific competition within low inorganic nutrient environments.

  • This study was investigated about influence of different cold water irrigation on the nutrient uptake of leaf blade, rachis branches and chaff. Longer duration of cold water irrigation increased total nitrogen content in leaf blade, branches and chaff but decreased the content of phosphate, potassium and silicate. The highest content of total nitrogen and phosphate showed at heading stage, that of potassium in leafblades and branches at heading but in chaff at maturing stage, and that of silicate at maturing stage. Inorganic element content in branches was similar with that in chaff in general. The excessive uptake of nitrogen by cold water irrigation caused decrease in the uptake phosphate, potassium and silicate showing clear nutrient disorder in the blades and chaff. High total nitrogen and low silicate in rice plants seemed to lead to degeneration of branches and spikelets, and to spikelet sterility. Degeneration and sterility appeared to be closely related to nutrient status of branches.

  • A seaweed biofilter/production system of being developed to reduce the environmental impact of marine fish farm effluent in coastal ecosystems as a part of an integrated aquaculture system. Several known seaweed taxa and their cultivars have been considered as candidate biofilter organisms based on their species-specific physiological properties such as nutrient uptake kinetics and their economic value. Porphyra is an excellent cadidate and shows efficient nutrient extraction properties. Rates of ammonium uptake were maintained at around 3 ${\mu}moles{\cdot}g{\cdot}dw^{-1}{\cdot}min^{-1}$ at 150 ${\mu}M$ inorganic nitrogen at $10^{\circ}C$. Ulva is another possible biofilter candidate with an uptake rate of 1.9 ${\mu}moles{\cdot}g{\cdot}dw^{-1}{\cdot}min^{-1}$ under same conditions. A simple uptake/growth and harvest model was applied to estimate the efficiency of the biofilter/production system. The model was deterministic and used a compartment model structure based on difference equations. The efficiency of Porpyra filter was estimated over 17% of ${NH_4}^+$ removal from the contimuous supply of 100 ${\mu}mole{\cdot}l^{-1}\;{NH_4}^+\;at\;100l{\cdot}sec^{-1}$ flow rate.

  • From July 1985 to December 1986, 28 variables of phycal-chemical factors, bacteria and heterotrophic activity were investigated 17 times at 3 stations in the estuary of Naktong River and the influences of environmental factors to bacterial population and heterotrophic activity were analyzed through multiple regression. The results of multiple regression were as follows. At station 1, total bacteria and heterotrophic bacteria(Z-25) could explain 57% of the variation of maximum uptake velocity for glucose and 54% of turnover time for glucose was explained by total coliform bacteria and MBOD, Sixty four percent of the variation of Kt+SN was accounted for salinity, MBOD-N and inorganic phosphate. Turnover rate for acetate was also accounted for the change of MBOD-P by 56%. At station 2 maximum uptake velocity for glucose depends on MBOD-N by 81%; turnover time on bacteria by 50%; Kt+Sn on avilable nutrient by 61%. More than 50% of maximum uptake velocity and turnover time for glucose were influenced by bacteria and that of Kt+Sn by the change of nutrient in the surface water of station 3. In the bottom water of station 3, the change of maximumuptake velocity, turnover time and Kt+Sn for glucose was controlled by total bacteria and available nutrient, bacteria, the change of nutrient salts respectively. On the whole, more than 50% of maximum uptake velocity and turnover time for glucose could be due to the change in the number of bacetria and the value of Kt+Sn was affected by the change of nutrient salts. Turnover rate for acetate was controlled by available phosphate at station 1 and by bacteria at station 2 and 3, which showed a distinct difference between the environmental factors which govern the rate of glucose and acetate uptake in the Naktong esturine ecosystem. And bacterial communities were controlled by available nutrients at station 1, by nutrient salts and salinity at station 2 and in the surface water of station 3 and by salinity in the bottom water of station 3.

  • The three-dimensional eco-hydrodynamic model was applied to estimate the physical process in terms of nutrients and net uptake(or regeneration) rate of nutrients in Kamak Bay for scenario analysis to find proper management plan. The estimation results of the physical process in terms of nutrients shelved that transportation of nutrients is dominant in surface level while accumulation of nutrients is dominant in bottom level. In the case of dissolved inorganic nitrogen, the results showed that the net uptake rate was 0∼60 mg/㎡/day in surface level(0∼3m), and the net regeneration rate was 0.0∼10.0 mg/㎡/day in middle level(3∼6m) and above 10mg/㎡/day in bottom level(6m∼below). In the case of dissolved inorganic phosphorus, the net uptake rate was 0.0∼3.0 mg/㎡/day in surface level, and the net regeneration rate was 0.5∼1.5 mg/㎡/day in middle level and 1.0∼3.0 mg/㎡/day in bottom level. These results indicates that net uptake and transport of nutrients are occurred predominantly at the surface level and the net generation and accumulation are dominant at bottom level. Therefore, it is important to consider the re-supplement of nutrients due to regeneration of bottom water.

  • The objective of this study was to estimate the amount of nutrient and water taken up at different growth stages by cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. cv. Eunsung Backdadagi) grown in a closed substrate culture system. The amount of nutrient solution absorbed increased in proportion to days from planting at the first stage of growth and depended on the level of radiation after the mid stage of growth. After the mid growth stage, the amount of nutrient solution absorption was maintained at 80-100 mg.MJ$^{-1}$ . Total amount of absorbed inorganic ions except S increased since the nutrient solution absorption increased with the level of radiation, although the absorption rate of each inorganic ion declined. A highly significant correlation ($R^2$>0.9) was found between amount of inorganic ions absorbed and days after planting, LAI, total dry weight and leaf dry weight, but not with CGR. Correlation coefficient between days after planting and the amount of nutrient solution absorbed per unit radiation level was 0.92. Correlation coefficient between leaf area an the amount of nutrient solution absorbed per unit radiation level was 0.97. Regression of the amount of nutrient solution absorbed per unit radiation level and nutrient ions uptake showed a high significance ($R^2$>0.9).

  • We investigated the growth and phosphate uptake of a toxic dinoflagellate, Gymnodinium catenatum, isolated from Yeosuhae Bay, South Korea. A short-term phosphate uptake experiment revealed that its maximum uptake and the half-saturation constant were 1.39 pmol/cell/hr and $2.65{\mu}M$, respectively. In a semicontinuous culture, the maximum specific growth rate and minimum phosphorus cell quota of G. catenatum were 0.39/day and 1.27 pmol/cell, respectively. Thus, G. catenatum is a poor competitor in terms of inorganic nutrient use and is unlikely to form blooms in Yeosuhae Bay.

  • This study was conducted to develop a nutrient uptake model in cucumnber (Cucumis sativus L. cv. Eunsung Backdadagi) plants for prediction of the amount of nutrients in drainage solution in a closed perlite culture system. Electrical conductivity (EC) of the nutrient solution was adjusted to 1.5, 1.8, 2.1, 2.4, and 2.7 dS. $m^{-1}$ . The amount of nutrient solution absorbed in different EC treatments was not different until the mid stage of growth. However, after the mid growth stage, a high EC treatment resulted in less solution absorption. The absorption rates of K, N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ -N, Mg, and P increased continuously for a whole growing period in all treatments, while those of Ca decreased slightly. For S, the decrease was significant after th mid stage of growth. although the amounts of absorbed inorganic ions in different EC treatments were not significantly different at the first stage of growth, they were significantly different after the mid stage of growth and decreased slightly at the end of growth stage. Models for predicting the amounts of each inorganic ion absorbed were developed by using EC and the amount of nutrient solution absorbed per unit radiation(mg.M $J^{-1}$), which proved to be practical with a positive correlation at 1 percent probability between the developed model and practical values..

  • In cold water irrigation, some growth and yield were decreased by heavy application of nitrogen but in-creased by heavy application of phosphate, potassium and silicate. Among growth characters, number of spikelets per panicle and grain filling ratio were affected significantly. Cold damage in number of spikelets, spikelet sterility and degeneration of spikelet and branch could be reduced by increasing application amount of phosphate, potassium and in particular silicate. Number of spikelets per branch was closely related with number of spikelets per secondary branches. Number of abortive grains and immature grains had negative correlations with yield and could be reduced by heavy application of phosphate, potassium and silicate. Heavy nitrogen application led to high total nitrogen content and restrained the uptake of phosphate, potassium and silicate. However, adverse results were showed by heavy application of phosphate, potassium and silicate. Inorganic element contents in branches were lower than those in leaf blades, but higher than those in chaff. Branches showed little differences in inorganic element contents between heading stage and maturing stage. Inorganic element contents in branches were considered to be influenced by those in leaf blades and to affect those in chaff. Some growth characters related to source and sink, such as degeneration of branches and spike-lets, sterility ratio, ripening ratio, and yield had closer relationship with nutrient contents in branches than those in leaf blades and chaff. The results demonstrated that the rachis branch not only was a transport pathway of nutrient but also would play an important role in accumulating substances in panicles.

  • The ecosystem model was applied to estimate the regional distribution of the net production(or consumption) of phytoplankton and the net uptake(or regeneration) rate of nutrients in Masan Bay for scenario analysis to find a proper management plan. At the surface level, net production of phytoplankton is 200 mgC/㎡/day at the entrance of the bay, and 400∼1000 mgC/㎡/day at the center of the bay. The inner area of the bay showed more than 2000 mgC/㎡/day. All areas of the bottom level have a net consumption, with the center of the bottom level showing more than 600 mgC/㎡/day. For dissolved inorganic nitrogen, the results showed a net uptake rate of 100∼900 mg/㎡/day at the surface level. It showed that the net regeneration is above 50 mg/㎡/day at the bottom level. For dissolved inorganic phosphorus, the net uptake rate showed 10.0∼80.0 mg/㎡/day at the surface level, and the regeneration rate showed 0∼20.5 mg/㎡/day at the bottom level. Therefore, in order to control the water quality in Masan Bay, it is important to consider the re-supplement of nutrients regenerated in the water column.
