  • The water uptake by fine aerosol in the atmosphere has been investigated at Gosan, Korea during ABC-EAREX 2005. The concentration of inorganic ion and carbon components, size distribution, and light scattering coefficients in normal and dry conditions were simultaneously measured for $PM_{2.5}$ by using a parallel integrated monitoring system. The result of this study shows that ambient fine particles collected at Gosan were dominated by water-soluble ionic species (35%) and carbonaceous materials (18%). In addition, it shows the large growth of aerosol in the droplet mode when RH is higher than 70%. Size distribution of the particulate surface area in a wider size range ($0.07-17{\mu}m$) shows that the elevation of RH make ambient aerosol grow to be the droplet mode one around $0.6{\mu}m$ or the coarse mode one, larger than $2.5{\mu}m$. Hygroscopic factor data calculated from the ratio of aerosol scattering coefficients at a given ambient RH and a reference RH (25%) show that water uptake began at the intermediate RH range, from 40% to 60%, with the average hygroscopic factor of 1.10 for 40% RH, 1.11 for 50% RH, and 1.17 for 60% RH, respectively. Finally, average chemical composition and the corresponding growth curves were analyzed in order to investigate the relationship between carbonaceous material fraction and hygroscopicity. As a result, the aerosol growth curve shows that inorganic salts such as sulphate and nitrate as well as carbonaceous materials including OC largely contribute to the aerosol water uptake.

  • Currently, the flexible organic light emitting devices (OLEDs) are investigated. They are very vulnerable to moisture, and thus have been found to show some problems. Thus, an effective barrier layer is needed to protect from moisture in air. We deposited thin films with magnesium oxide (MgO) and silicon oxide $(SiO_{2})$ compounds mixed at various mixture ratios on flexible polyether sulfone (PES) substrates by an electron-beam evaporator to investigate their applizability for transparent barrier applications. In this study, we found that as the MgO fraction increased, thin films comprised of MgO and $(SiO_{2})$ compounds became more amorphous and their surface morphologies become smoother and denser. In addition, zirconium oxide $(ZrO_{2})$ was added to the above-mentioned compound mixtures. $ZrO_{2}$ made thin mixture films more amorphous and made the surface morphology denser and more uniform. The water vapor transmission rates (WVTRs) of the whole films decreased rapidly. The best WVTR was obtained by depositing thin films of Mg-Si-Zr-O compound among the whole thin films. As the thin mixture films became more amorphous, and the surface morphology become denser and more uniform, the WVTRs decreased. Therefore, the thin mixture films became more suitable for flexible OLED applications as transparent passivation layers against moisture in air.

  • This study was conducted to investigate changes in inorganic phosphorus fractions in phosphorus accumulated plastic film house soils under cropping condition. Pot experiment was conducted with surface soils taken from plastic film house fields cultivated for 3, 8 and 16 years. Phosphorus fertilizer was applied at the rates of 0 (P0), $100kg\;ha^{-1}$ (recommended application rate. P1) and $200kg\;ha^{-1}$ (P2) as fused phosphate. Crops were grown sequentially in the order of corn-Chinese cabbage-Chinese cabbage-corn for 3 years. The content of easily soluble-P fraction was decreased with cropping. There were significantly positive relationship not only between the contents of easily soluble-P and the amounts of soil available P ($r=0.839^{**}{\sim}0.952^{**}$ for Bray-1 P, $r=0.895^{**}{\sim}0.967^{**}$ for Lancaster P, and $r=0.491^{**}{\sim}0.821^{**}$ for Olsen P), but also between the amounts of P absorbed by plants and the amounts of easily soluble P decreased ($r=0.644^{**}{\sim}0.822^{**}$). The decrease of easily soluble-P during cropping period could be described by a first-order reaction. The number of cropping times needed to decrease the content of easily soluble-P to an index level of $0.2mg\;kg^{-1}$, which is commonly reported as the desired concentration for soil P, was predicted in the range of 26~33 cropping times by using the equations. Regardless of P fertilization, the proportion of Al-P to total P was little varied during cropping period, but the proportion of Fe-P to total P increased with cropping. Although the content of Ca-P was high before cropping, the proportion of Ca-P to total P was increased with cropping. The proportion of reductant soluble-P to total P was little varied for P fertilizer treatment but was increased for no P fertilizer treatment. The residual-P was decreased during cropping period due to the absorption by crops and the conversion to other inorganic P fractions.

  • Agricultural soils surrounding mine areas in South Korea are often contaminated with multiple metals such as Cd, Pb and Zn. It poses potential risks to plants, soil organisms, groundwater, and eventually human health. The aim of this study was to examine the changes in phytoavailability of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn after application with calcined eggshell (CES; 0, 1, 3, and 5% W/W) in an agricultural soil contaminated by mine tailings. The contents of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in soils were 8.79, 65.4, 1602, and $692mgkg^{-1}$ (aqua regia dissolution), respectively. The experiments were conducted with lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. longifolia) grown under greenhouse conditions during a 30-d period. $NH_4NO_3$ solution was used to examine the mobile fraction of these metals in soil. The application of CES dramatically increased soil pH and inorganic carbon content in soil due to CaO and $CaCO_3$ of CES. The increased soil pH decreased the mobile fraction of Cd, Pb, Zn: from 3.49 to < $0.01mgkg^{-1}$ for Cd, from 79.4 to $1.75mgkg^{-1}$ for Pb, and from 29.6 to $1.13mgkg^{-1}$ for Zn with increasing treatment of CES from 0 to 5%. In contrast, the mobile fraction of Cu was increased from 0.05 to $3.08mgkg^{-1}$, probably due to the formation of soluble $CuCO_3{^0}$ and Cu-organic complex. This changes in the mobile fraction resulted in a diminished uptake of Cd, Pb and Zn by lettuce and an increased uptake of Cu: from 4.19 to < $0.001mgkg^{-1}$ dry weight (DW) for Cd, from 0.78 to < $0.001mgkg^{-1}$ DW for Pb, and from 133 to $50.0mgkg^{-1}$ DW for Zn and conversely, from 3.79 up to $8.21kg^{-1}$ DW for Cu. The increased contents of Cu in lettuce shoots did not exceed the toxic level of $>25mgkg^{-1}$ DW. The mobile contents of these metals in soils showed a strong relationship with their contents in plant roots and shoots. These results showed that CES effectively reduced the phytoavailability of Cd, Pb, and Zn to lettuce but elevated that of Cu in consequence of the changed binding forms of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in soils. Based on these conclusions, CES can be used as an effective immobilization agent for Cd, Pb and Zn in contaminated soils. However, the CES should be applied in restricted doses due to too high increased pH in soils.

  • Coal combustion fly ash, which has a high available Si content and alkaline pH, was selected as a potential source of soil amendment in this study. Two field experiments were carried out to evaluate the possibility of heavy metal accumulation in silt loam (Pyeongtaeg series) and loamy sand (Nagdong series) of rice (Oryza sativa) paddy soils to which 0, 40, 80, and $120Mg\;ha^{-1}$ of fly ash were added. Rice yields increased significantly with fly ash application and the highest rice yields were achieved following the addition of around $90Mg\;ha^{-1}$ fly ash. Fly ash increased the soil pH but did not increase heavy metal uptakes of rice and heavy metal concentration in soils, due to very low concentration of heavy metals in the selected fly ash. Labile fraction of heavy metals (exchangeable + acidic fraction) was scarcely contained and most of them were stable and unavailable form (oxidizable and residual fraction). In conclusion fly ash could be a good supplement to an inorganic soil amendments without heavy metal contamination in paddy soils.

  • When radioactive wastewater was solidified treatment by cement, the drying rate of cement and the volume reduction ratio was decreased because of boric acid component in the wastewater. In order to supplement the demerit, effects of paraffin wax investigated in this study. Paraffin wax has a hydrophobic properties and a low affinity with inorganic materials. When the radioactive wastewater was tested by a small of wax, the compressive strength of solidified waste are decreased Therefore boric acid in radioactive wastewater are first treated by alkali salt and coated by the stearic acid. During the solidification step, The amount of paraffin wax addition get the result that the compressive strength of solidification with cement was the same as that with paraffin wax. The leaching properties of radioactive waste solidified was the same CFL (cumulative fraction leached), PR (penetration rate), effective diffusivity if paraffin wax content in solidified waste was 20% or 25%.

  • Water content of $PM_{2.5}$ (particles in the atmosphere with a diameter of less than or equal to a nominal $2.5{\mu}m$) was estimated by using a gas/aerosol equilibrium model, SCAPE2, for the particles collected at Seoul and Gosan, Korea. From measured and analyzed characteristics of the particles, the largest difference between Seoul and Gosan is the proportions of total ammonia (t-$NH_3$=gas phase $NH_3$+particle phase ${NH_4}^+$), total nitric acid (t-$HNO_3$=gas phase $HNO_3$+particle phase ${NO_3}^-$) and sulfuric acid ($H_2SO_4$). Even though both sites have sufficient t-$NH_3$ to neutralize acidic species such as $H_2SO_4$, t-$HNO_3$, and t-HCl (total chloric acid=gas phase HCl+particle phase $Cl^-$), equivalent fraction of t-$NH_3$ and t-$HNO_3$ are higher at Seoul and $H_2SO_4$ is higher at Gosan. Based on the modeling result, it is identified that the $PM_{2.5}$ at Seoul is more hygroscopic than Gosan if the meteorological conditions are the same. To reduce water content of $PM_{2.5}$, and thus, mass concentration, control measures for ammonia and nitrate reduction are needed for Seoul, and inter-governmental cooperation is required for Gosan.

  • To find antitumor constituents in Korean basidiomycetes, the mycelia of Lentinus edodes DMC7, which had shown a good mycelial growth in shakeflasks, were cultured at $27^{\circ}C$ on an orbital shaking incubator at 180 rev/min for 12 days. The medium was composed of glucose (50g/l), yeast extract (9g/l), peptone (9g/l), and seven inorganic salts. A water soluble macromolecular fraction, LF-3, was obtained from the culure filtrate by fractionation with ethanol and dialysis using a Visking tube. When LF-3 was administered i.p. at 50mg/kg/day once daily for 10 consecutive days to female ICR mice which were implanted s.c. with sarcoma 180 $(10^6\;cells/mouse)$, it exerted a highly significant antitumor activity, with the tumor inhibition ratio of 53. 1%.

  • This study has examined the physicochemical properties of the Pleurotus eryngii, including their proximate components, amount mineral content, total dietary fiber, total sugar, reducing sugar and free sugar. Additionally, it measured the P. egii ethanol extracts and the total amounts of polyphenol compounds as well as its electron donating ability (EDA) of the substance fraction (SF). The P. eryngii powder's moisture content was 9.0% and each of the other element content such as carbohydrate, crude protein, crude ash and crude fat was found to be 63.06%, 20.70%, 5.20% and 2.0% respectively. Potassium (K) was shown to be the greatest inorganic content and manganese (Mn) was the lowest. Furthermore fructose, galactose, glucose lactose and maltose free sugar content was found in this order. 387 mg% of the total amounts of polyphenol was found in the P. eryngii whole body ethanol extract, 158 mg% in the stipe extract, 593 mg% in the pileus extract and 607 mg% in the substance fraction (SF). Electron donating ability (EDA) was highest at 91.12% in the whole body extract and lowest at 62.90% in the stipe extract. Additionally, the EDA for substance fraction (SF) 0.02%-0.1% was found to be 57.78-77.33%, which was lower than the 0.02%-tocopherol (93.92%) and BHT (96.72%). From these results, it can be assumed that P. eryngii offers superior antioxidative effects with its high content of fiber, inorganic materials and total amounts of polyphenol as well as high electron donating ability (EDA), thereby making it ideal for use in functional foods and industrial materials.
