  • In this study, wasted stone powders (WSP) obtained from sludge and Wasted Tire Chips (WTC) as fillers have been used to formulate polymer hybrid composites based on Unsaturated Polyester (UPE) resin. To further enhance not only the interfacial bond between the inorganic filler and the polymer matrix, but also the filler dispersion by wetting the particulate surfaces to uniformly spread the resin during the mixing, silane coupling agent[${\gamma}$-methacryloxy propyl trimethoxy silane (${\gamma}$-MPS)] was used. The influences of organic recycled fillers contents and the concentrations of coupling agent in polymer hybrid composite formulations have been investigated from a mechanical and microstructural point o view through Mercury Porosimeter and SEM.

  • Nano composite materials were multi-constituent combinations of nano dimensional phases with distinct differences in structure, chemistry and properties. Nano particles were less likely to create large stress concentrations and thereby can avoid the compromise of the material ductility while improve other mechanical properties. Corona discharge was an electrical discharge. The ionization of a fluid surrounding a conductor was electrically energized. This discharge would occur when the strength of the electric field around the conductor was high enough to form a conductive region, but not high enough to cause electrical breakdown or arcing to nearby objects. This paper shows all the studies done on the preparation of nano fillers. Special attention has given to the ACSR transmission line conductor, TiO2 nano fillers and also to the evaluation of corona resistance on dielectric materials discussed in detail. The measurement of the dielectric properties of the nano fillers and the parameters influencing them were also discussed in the paper. Corona discharge test reveals that in 0%N ACSR sample corona loss was directly proportional to the applied line voltage. No significant change in corona loss between 0%N and 1%N. When TiO2 nano filler concentration was increased up to 10%N fine decrement in corona loss was found when compared to base ACSR conductor, corona loss was decreased by 40.67% in 10%N ACSR sample. It was also found from the surface conditions test that inorganic TiO2 nano filler increases the key parameters like tensile strength and erosion depth.

  • To investigate the reinforcing effects of functional fillers in nitrile rubber (NBR) materials, high-structure carbon black (HS45), coated calcium carbonate (C-CaCO3), silica (200MP), and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were used as functional filler, and carbon black (SRF) as a common filler were used for oil-resistant rubber. The curing and mechanical properties of HS45-, 200MP-, and MWCNT-filled NBR compounds were improved compared to those of the SRF-filled NBR compound. The reinforcing effect also increased with a decrease in the particle size of the fillers. The C-CaCO3-filled NBR compound exhibited no reinforcing effect with increasing filler concentration because of their large primary particle size (2 ㎛). The reinforcing behavior based on 100% modulus of the functional filler based NBR compounds was compared by using several predictive equation models. The reinforcing behavior of the C-CaCO3-filled NBR compound was in accordance with the Smallwood-Einstein equation whereas the 200MP- and MWCNT-filled NBR compounds fitted well with the modified Guth-Gold (m-Guth-Gold) equation. The SRF- and HS45-filled NBR compounds exhibited reinforcing behavior in accordance with the Guth-Gold and m-Guth-Gold equations, respectively, at a low filler content. However, the values of reinforcement parameter (100Mf/100Mu) of the SRF- and HS45-filled NBR compounds were higher than those determined by the predictive equation model at a high filler content. Because the chains of SRF composed of spherical filler particles are similarly changed to rod-like filler particles embedded in a rubber matrix and the reinforcement parameter rapidly increased with a high content of HS45, the higher-structured filler. The reinforcing effectiveness of the functional fillers was numerically evaluated on the basis of the effectiveness index (SRF/f) determined by the ratio of the volume fraction of the functional filler (f) to that of the SRF filler (SRF) at three unit of reinforcing parameter (100Mf/100Mu). On the basis of their effectiveness index, MWCNT-, 200MP-, and HS45-filled compounds showed higher reinforcing effectiveness of 420%, 70%, and 20% than that of SRF-filled compound, respectively whereas C-CaCO3-filled compound exhibited lower reinforcing effectiveness of -50% than that of SRF-filled compound.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of inorganic composition and filler particle morphology on the mechanical properties of different self-adhesive resin cements (SARCs). Materials and Methods: Three SARCs including RelyX Unicem-2 (RUN), Maxcem Elite (MAX), and Calibra Universal (CAL) were tested. Rectangular bar-shaped specimens were prepared for flexural strength (FS) and flexural modulus (FM) and determined by a 3-point bending test. The Knoop microhardness (KHN) and top/bottom microhardness ratio (%KHN) were conducted on the top and bottom faces of disc-shaped samples. Sorption (Wsp) and solubility (Wsl) were evaluated after 24 hours of water immersion. Filler morphology was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). FS, FM, %KHN, Wsp, Wsl, and EDS results were submitted to 1-way analysis of variance and Tukey's post-hoc test, and KHN also to paired t-test (α = 0.05). Results: SARC-CAL presented the highest FS value, and SARC-RUN presented the highest FM. SARC-MAX and RUN showed the lowest Wsp and Wsl values. KHN values decreased from top to bottom and the SARCs did not differ statistically. Also, all resin cements presented carbon, aluminum, and silica in their composition. SARC-MAX and RUN showed irregular and splintered particles while CAL presented small and regular size particles. Conclusions: A higher mechanical strength can be achieved by a reduced spread in grit size and the filler morphology can influence the KHN, as well as photoinitiators in the composition. Wsp and Wsl can be correlated with ions diffusion of inorganic particles.

  • Nonaqueous organic electrolyte solution in commercially available lithium-ion batteries, due to its flammability, corrosiveness, high volatility, and thermal instability, is demanding to be substituted by safer solid electrolyte with higher cycle stability, which will be utilized effectively in large-scale power sources such as electric vehicles and energy storage system. Of various types of solid electrolytes, composite solid electrolytes with polymer matrix and active inorganic fillers are now most promising in achieving higher ionic conductivity and excellent interface contact. In this review, some kinds and brief history of solid electrolyte are at first introduced and consequent explanations of polymer solid electrolytes and inorganic solid electrolytes (including active and inactive fillers) are comprehensively carried out. Composite solid electrolytes including these polymer and inorganic materials are also described with their electrochemical properties in terms of filler shapes, such as particle (0D), fiber (1D), plane (2D), and solid body (3D). In particular, in all-solid-state lithium batteries using lithium metal anode, the interface characteristics are discussed in terms of cathode-electrolyte interface, anode-electrolyte interface, and interparticle interface. Finally, current requisites and future perspectives for the composite solid electrolytes are suggested by help of some decent reviews recently reported.

  • The packaging with environment-friendly materials become more important issue since the concern for the environment and the disposal of waste such as the packaging materials has increased. Although the paper based packaging such as corrugated box are widely used as a typical environment-friendly packaging stuff, the heat insulation properties of paper packaging did not get many attention. In this study, the heat insulation properties of paper were deeply evaluated to improve the functional properties as packaging material of the cold storage goods. The simple device for evaluating the heat insulation of paper product was developed. Subsequently, the changes in the heat insulation depending on the paper structure and the addition of the inorganic fillers were investigated by using the instrument. The higher basis weight and the less beating time resulted in the bulkier structure and the less efficiency of heat transfer. The addition of the perlite powder as a filler resulted in the great increase in the heat insulation, although the addition of the calcium carbonate decreased the heat insulation potential of paper.

  • Although cleaner and cheaper deinking of ONP could be performed at the neutral or low alkaline condition excessive loss from froth-flotation is unavoidable and so reduction of alkali or caustic soda dosage sacrifices recycling yield. Now the new trade-off regarding alkali dosage versus flotation yield is urgently required in order to set the optimized neutral or low alkaline deinking process of ONP. Lipase from Thermomyces Lanuginosus has an effect on desizing and deacetylation reaction and it could be applied to the stock of pre flotation secondary stage in order to reduce the flotation reject without the sacrifice of optical properties of flotation accepts. Instead of inorganic base, lipase could be applied as a biochemical catalyst for the selective modification of valuable hydrophobic particles in deinking stock, for example cellulose fines and inorganic fillers covered by hydrophobic additives or contaminants. When the enzymatic hydrolysis of ester bond could be made on the surface of hydrophobic particulates, unwanted float of fine particles could be prevented. Now the enhancement of flotation selectivity or the modification of the hydrophobicity of deinking stock is expected to be promoted by the enzymatic pre treatment. And the reduction of recycling cost with the saves of raw material, recovered paper would be possible as a result.

  • In this study, the graded thermal properties of composites are obtained by difference in specific gravity of fillers including Cu, h-BN and GO powders in epoxy. Relatively heavy powders such as Cu and h-BN compared to GO mostly at the bottom layer, while light GO powders were dispersed in the top layer in the composites. The thermal conductivity of composites was gradually increased from 0.55 (0.52) W/mK to 2.82 (1.37) W/mK for GO/h-BN (GO/Cu) epoxy composites from surface to bottom. On the contrary, the coefficient of thermal expansion was decreased from 51 ppm/℃ to 23 ppm/℃ and from 57 ppm/℃ to 32 ppm/℃ for GO/Cu and GO/h-BN, respectively. The variation of thermal properties in composites is attributed due to intrinsic material properties of filler including thermal conductivity, morphology and the distribution by the specific weight of fillers. This simple strategy for realizing graded thermal composites by introducing different filler materials would be effective heat transfer at interface of heterostructure with large thermal properties such as inorganic semiconductor/plastic, metal/plastic, and semiconductor/metal.

  • Nanocomposites of polyurethane were prepared from inorganic nano particles, $Na^+-montmorillonite$ (MMT), silica, $CaCO_3$, and surface modified MMT and their properties were investigated. It was shown that the molecular weight and polydispenity of nanocomposites of polyurethane were 20000 to 28000 and 1.0 to 2.0, respectively. d-Spacing for nanocomposites of MMT were increased than that of pure MMT. Initial degradation temperature of nanocomposites were 250 to $280^{\circ}C$. And also, the range of weight loss for nanocomposites were decreased and the end of thermal degradation was observed at higher temperatures about $50^{\circ}C$. The elongation at break for $CaCO_3$ filled nanocomposites were the highest among the nanocomposites used in this study. studied. It was found that the tensile strength increased with increasing the filler contents while the silica nanocomposite exhibited the lowest increase and the $CaCO_3$ nanocomposite the highest.

  • Acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) tapes were used for the automotive, the electrical and the electronic industries and the display module junction. In this study, the manufacture of high-strength structural tape used 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (2-EHA) and acrylic acid (AAC), and UV irradiation for photo-polymerization, and the semi-structural properties of acrylic PSA tape with the AAC content and inorganic filler $SiO_2$ content were investigated. The initial adhesion strength was lowered by the rigidity of molecule chains due to the use of AAC, and the adhesion strength increased with increasing wetting time. The wetability, contact angle, and SEM images of PSA tapes with various contents of AAC were determined. Without filler, the peel strength and dynamic shear strength of PSA tape showed inverse correlation but the peel strength and dynamic shear strength increased with increasing filler content. From these correlations the PSA tapes could be optimized for the applications requiring high performance.
