The present study was aimed to evaluate the removal of the trace pollutants (heavy metals and microplastics) in the sewage treatment plant by using the jellyfish Extract at Immunity reaction (JEI) of Aurelia coerulea. The experiment was conducted on two different scales: the lab scale using a Jar-tester and the Pilot system scale equipped with two newly developed devices in the laboratory, the active tube connection mixed system and the concentration integrated separation device. Compared to anionic polymers currently used in the field, JEI showed similar or higher efficiency to remove the trace pollutants. When JEI was added to the effluent through the Pilot system, the combination of JEI and the trace pollutants was maximized through two mixing processes, and as a result, the removal rate of the trace pollutants was greatly improved. Based on these results, we propose the present technology as an alternative to removing trace pollutants that can reduce ecosystem risk and minimize the generation of inorganic waste, away from the existing method.
Soil pollution around railroad has been occurred mainly by diesel and lubricant oil, which is difficult to treat due to high carbon number. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of inorganic-inorganic nanohybrid photo-catalyst for the remediation of diesel-contaminated railroad soil. Generally, the $TiO_2$ nanoparticle easily removes organic pollutants due to photo and natural clay of layer structure. Also, montmorillonite (MMT) have an excellent absorption property with organic component. So, we prepared $TiO_2$ pillared MMT nanohybrid photo-catalyst as a chemical oxidant through the integration of theses advantage. As a result, the removal efficiency of diesel was more than 45% at a laboratory-scale test with diesel concentration and the amount of $TiO_2$-MMT. In future, we will improve the removal efficiency of diesel to optimize experimental parameters and apply the field soil The remediation method using photo-catalyst can be used to clean up the railroad soil polluted with high concentration instead of common methods such as soil washing, bioremediation, etc..
To investigate the water quality characteristics and eutrophication of the Keum River, survey were conducted on samples collected from 6 stations in Aug. and Oct. in 1995 and Jan. and May in 1996. The results were summarized as follows ; Concentration of pollutants were in the range of 1.74~6.35(mean 3.81)mg/$\ell$for BOD and 1.98~8.21(5.14)mg/$\ell$for COD and 1.46~51.94(18.52)g/$\ell$for TSS. Water quality were evaluate to be 2~3 grade of station 1 and other stations were 3~4 grade of water quality criteria. The concentration of nutrients were in the range of 55.2~735.3(309.3)$\mu\textrm{g}$-at/$\ell$for Dissolved inorganic nitrogen(DIN) and 0.06~6.03(2.80)$\mu\textrm{g}$-at/$\ell$ for dissolved inorganic phosphate(DIP). Nutrient concentrations in Keum River were usually high and the DIN/DIP ratio ranged from 72 to 2648. The concentration of chlorophyll-a was in the range of 1.1~143.7(44.3)mg/㎥. Chlorophyll-a concentration were high 10mg/㎥ except station 1, which is the value of eutrophication criteria by EPA. Correlations between nutrients and chlorophlly-a were not significant. According to eutrophication evaluation, Keum river was equivalent to the eutrophic state.
Seasonal characteristics of water quality and effect of the freshwater discharge during open the tide embankment in Haechang Bay were evaluated. In the freshwater, where interior of the tide embankment, COD and Chl-a exceeded about 4mg/L and $10mg/m^3$, respectively, independent of season, while in the seawater they showed high values in April and July in contrast to the other period due to input of freshwater and increase of phytoplankton, respectively. The content of seawater inorganic nitrogen maintained a relatively high level at inner part of the bay, whereas high values of inorganic phosphorus content was distributed at all over the bay. The limiting factor for algal growth was nitrogen with respect to the N/P ratio. The compass of influence by the freshwater discharge in April was quite different with water pollutants. As a result of the salinity variation with time, the freshwater extended strongly to offshore from the surface layer without mixing with depth when open the tide embankment, and reached within about one hour at a station which is 3.5km from the tide embankment. To effective water quality management of Haechang Bay, discharge rate and pollutant loads should be controlled.

Dry and wet deposition is an impertant removal mechanism of the amobient aerosol in the atmospheric environment. Since the deposition flut provides adverse impacts on various encironmental media including aquatic and ecological system as well as human health, it is essential to quantitatively estimate the removal fluxes of many air pollutants. Thus, the purposes of this experimental study are to investigate seasonal deposition flux variations of the total dustfall and various inorganic elements in the local ambient air and then to finally estimate their dry deposition velocities. To perform the study, the total of 90 dustfall samples were collected from January, 1994 thru February, 1995 in 5 different cities of Korea including Seoul, Suwon, Daejon, Kwangju, and Kangrung. Each sample was analyzed by an AAS and an ICP to determine the quantities of the 11 inorganic elements, such as Zn, Cd, Cr, K, Na, Pb, Ca, Fe, Mn, Mi, and Cu. As results, deposition fluxes, soluble/insoluble fractions, and deposition velocities for each element were extensively investigated. The resulting dry deposition velocities of some elements in Suwon were estimated by ranges of 0.57 .sim. 0.87 cm/sec for Zn, 0.35 .sim. 0.45 cm/sec for Pb, 1.25 .sim. 3.52 cm/sec for Ca, 0.21 .sim. 0.48 cm/sec for Fe, 0.95 .sim. 9.31 cm/sec for Mn, and 2.08 cm/sec for Cu.
Analytic research on the surface pollutant of the three storied-pagoda at the west of Gameunsaji site as well as studies of previous wet cleaning cases was undertaken in order to decide cleaning method for removing inorganic pollutants. The status of pollutant was examined by naked eye observation, SEM-EDS, XRD. Then it was compared and categorized through qualitive and quantitative analysis. The result showed that the surface pollutants consisted of iron compounds or sulfur compounds and it was crystallized in the form of circle, oval, needle, etc. Result, Low-pressure rotating vortex process cleaning, with which particular matters are sprayed in swirl, is considered to be the best method to remove the pollutants.

Plankton communities have close relationships with environmental changes in water columns. Thus, the use of plankton as a biological tool for assessing the marine ecosystem health may be effective. Major issue regarding coastal pollution has been usually recognized as phytoplankton blooms or red tides caused by the eutrophication, an increase in concentration of inorganic nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus. However, in order to understand the effects of the overall pollution on marine ecosystem, the organic pollutants as well as the inorganic nutrients should be also considered. For understanding the effects of the organic pollution, among the planktonic organisms, heterotrophic bacteria, heterotrophic flagellates and ciliates should be investigated. Generally, there are three approaches for assessing the marine ecosystem health using the plankton taxa or plankton communities. The first one is a community-based approach such as diversity index and chlorophyll a concentration which are common in analysis of the plankton communities. The second is an indiviual-based approach which is to monitor the pollution indicative species. This approach needs one's ability to identify the plankton to species level. The last approach is a bioassay of toxicity, which can be applied to the plankton. A pilot study in Masan Bay was conducted to assess the effects of the inorganic and organic pollution. In this article, a new approach using plankton communities was tentatively presented as a biological tool for assessing the ecosystem health of Masan Bay.
The charcoal-encapsulated methyl silica microcapsules were prepared by a O/W microemulsion sol-gel method, and the adsorption properties on aquatic humic acid were investigated. The capsules prepared were spherical, $100{\sim}1000{\mu}m$ in size. The size distribution was controllable by adjusting the size of charcoal powder, charcoal/methyl silica ratio, and agitating speed in O/W sol-gel process. Adsorption efficiency of charcoal for aquatic humic acid was decreased after encapsulation by methyl silica shell. The decreased adsorption efficiency can be dependent on the decrease of the BET surface area and pore volume after encapsulation. Diffusion properties of humic acid through the capsule shell also played an important role on adsorption efficiency. Therefore, the reasonable target pollutants for the capsules can be VOC or odor molecules which can overcome diffusion barrier through shell of capsules in air condition. Functionalization methods for the charcoal-encapsulated $CH_3(SiO)_n$ microcapsules by incorporation of $TiO_3$ as a phtocatalytic function and by incorporation of inorganic pigment as a color function were also investigated. $TiO_2$ coating properties were controllable by adjusting pH, temperature, and the concentration of $TiOSO_4$. In XRD measurement, the crystal form of the coated $TiO_2$ was anatase. For the colorization of the capsules, inorganic pigments were more efficient than organic dyes, and various color was introduced to the capsules using inorganic pigments.

This paper presents preliminary laboratory investigations on the electrokinetic (EK) remediation coupled with permeable reactive barrier (PRB) system. Atomizing slag was adopted as a PRB reactive material for remediation of groundwater contaminated with inorganic and/or organic substances. A series of laboratory experiments were performed with variable conditions such as (i) type of contaminant, (ii) applied electric field strength, (iii) processing time, and (iv) the application of PRB system. From the preliminary investigations, the coupled technology of EK with PRB system would be effective to remediate contaminated grounds without the extraction of pollutants from subsurface due to the reactions between the reactive materials and contaminants.
As industrial activities are growing, pollutants found in the contaminated land are getting diverse. Some contaminated areas are subject to mixed wastes containing both organic and inorganic wastes such as hydrocarbon and heavy metals. This study concerns with the influence of the degradation of organic pollutants on the coexisting heavy metals, expecially for As. As mainly exists as two different oxidation state; As(III) and As(V) and the conversion between the two chemical forms may be induced by organic degradation in the soil contaminated by mixed wastes. We operated microcosm in an anaerobic chamber for 60 days, using sandy loam. The soils in the microcosm are artificially contaminated both by tetradecane and As, with different combination of As(III) and As(V); As(III):As(V) 1:1, As(III) only and As(V) only. Although not systematic, ratio of As(III)/As(Total) increase slightly at the later stage of experiment. Considering complicated geochemical reactions involving oxidation/reduction of organic materials, Mn/Fe oxides and As, the findings in the study seem to indicate the degradation of the organics is connected with the As speciation. That is to say, the As(V) can be reduced to As(III) either by direct or indirect influence induced by the organic degradation. Although Fe and Mn are good oxidising agent for the oxidation of As(III) to As(V), organic degradation may have suppressed reductive dissolution of the Fe and Mn oxides, causing the organic pollutants to retard the oxidation of As(III) to As(V) until the organic degradation ceases. The possible influence of organic degradation on the As speciation implies that the As in mixed wastes may be have elevated toxicity and mobility by partial conversion from As(V) to As(III).
