  • This study explores the effects of technology innovation activity on a profitability and the default risk of firms. Sample for this study consists of manufacturing firms listed on the Korea Stock Exchange from 1st January 2000 to 31st December 2007. We use of R&D ratio as a proxy of technology innovation activity. The default probability proxied for the default risk of firms is measured by the Merton's (1974) model where accounts for a market value of firms and a volatility of it. This study provides evidence that technology innovation activity has a positive effect on a profitability, but a negative effect on the default risk of firms. Our study also finds the significant mediation effect of profitability that the enhancement in profitability resulting from technology innovation activity lowers the default risk of firms.

  • Most research on Official Development Assistance (ODA) targeted the recipients, but this study examines the effect of ODA on the donor's exports to the recipient. To do this, a panel analysis was carried out with ODA and macroeconomic data on the United States and 33 other countries from 1999 to 2009. The results are summarized as follows: (1) The economic influence on the donor varies with the recipient's localization effort. (2) High-tech exports to the recipient are independent of ODA. (3) In medium-to-low-technology areas, ODA has a positive effect on exports to the recipient with low absorption efforts. (4) Both High-tech and LM-tech product exports decreases with the technological innovation efforts of recipients with high absorption efforts, while High-tech product exports only increases with that of recipients with low absorption efforts. These results indicate that a strategic approach for ODA program is more effective and useful to the donor's economy.

  • Despite a growing literature focusing on technological development as a key driving force behind the economic performance of a firm or a nation's industy, we still fall short of a comprehensive understanding of how each of the elements required of technological developent and innovation fits togther and leads to economic progress and industry change. This paper seeks to fill this gap by bringing together some of key insights from the theory and research on the coevolutionary process of technology, organizations, and industry, and on the role of institutions in this process. By combining a diverse array of research streams, we provide a broad suvey of foundational work on the following two questions: (1) how the creation and diffusion of innovation occurs and gives rise to structural reconfigurations of the industry, (2) how organisations and technology coevolve, and (3) what is the role of institutions in this coevolutionary process? Based on this literature survey, we also offer a synthesis that can serve as a ground that allows a more nuanced understanding of the sources, dynamics and impacts of technological development and innovation, and interrelationships among technology, organizations and industry change.

  • InnovVizwas designed and developed anew as avisualization and simulationtool to present innovation and strategy information. The InnovViz system employs two key types of technology, namely mixed reality (MR) and neural network (NN). An experiment was conducted to examine the usability, acceptance and possible adoption of this new system. Participants comprised 4 experts from 4 top performing entrepreneurial firms and 161 master degree students from 2 leading universities. The study used a modified UTAUT model and a cognition and perception model. The results revealed that when the InnovViz was introduced, the key drivers to adoption are Facilitating Conditions (FC) and Voluntary to Use (VOL). Adequate knowledge and sufficient resources were found to strongly affect FC construct. The expert's rating of a firm's innovation and performance was more congruent with senior students with a technology-background than with a finance and accounting-background. InnovViz was seen as providing complex information with an ease of use and usefulness for showing data and assessment. Among the three types of visuals depicted by InnovViz, experts rated their usefulness in descending order as follows: Cube, Tetrahedron and Saturn. Finally, experts found backward simulation to be slightly more useful for assessment than forward simulation.

  • To provide a fundamental understanding on the inherent relationship between IT capabilities and sustainable firm heterogeneity, we investigate the dual roles that institutional pressures play, namely, as antecedents of IT capabilities and as moderator of the relationship between IT capabilities and IT innovation success, where IT innovation success plays a mediating role between IT capabilities and firm performance. The structural model was tested, and the results of the PLS analysis provided general support for the proposed hypotheses. IT capabilities had an indirect effect mediated by IT innovation success on firm performance. With IT activities assumed to be embedded in the institutional context, the dual roles of institutional pressures are verified. This study contributes to the literature on IT capabilities by considering both the determining role of institutional pressures on IT capabilities and the institutional context of the chain that connects IT capabilities to firm performance. The results suggest that a firm not only manages various institutional pressures to foster its IT capabilities but also adapts to different contexts with a certain level of institutional pressures to facilitate its IT capabilities and outperform its competitors, which could be sustained through IT innovation success.

  • As the COVID-19 continues spreading, Korea's Ministry of Education (MOE) announced that all public schools, including elementary, middle, and high schools, must begin on April 9, 2020, via online teaching for the first time in the nation's history. There were opposite views among educators regarding the unprecedented attempt to start school online. This study intends to analyze the strategies and policies of distance learning in the public education sector using the experiences in Korea, which has been dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic over the past six months, and thus presents educational implications that may be of interest other countries in the post-COVID-19 era. This study first conceptualized the distance education policy in two domains: technological infrastructure and technological teaching and learning, and then examined what specific policies have supported distance education in school settings. For the analysis of policies supporting distance education in Korea, this study analyzed the relevant documents that include the annual plan and press release uploaded on the website of MOE from early March until early August. Accordingly, 13 documents that contain the distance education policy were analyzed in this study. To provide equal opportunities for all students and ensure fair resource allocations, technological inequality should be discussed in the context of educational inequality. Finally, this study looks at how strategies and policies could be related to educational equality and equity.
