  • In this paper, a strategy for utilizing the Korean tradi-tional spaces and interior design elements in inner space in order to express Korean-style interior design has been studied. Characteristics of Korean tradition was gathered from literatures in two categories; space and el-ements. Space again has been studied in detail in the area of split, continuity, hierarchy, elasticity, dynamics. And study of elements includes floor, wall, ceiling, dan-chung, lattice, laytiles on a roof, rafter, extended eaves, the line of eaves. 30 Korean restaurants were selected, analysed and compared with literature review. Based on the compari-son, a strategy for proper expression and utilization of Korean tradition is suggested. In the process of compari-son, current status of implementation and problems were found. Traditional elements are used in about 50% of Korean restaurants located in hotels, and 25% of those located in department stores. With the survey and other professional's opinions, an implementation plan is suggest-ed as follows; 1. Succession design method of tradition should use main-ly amelioration method and use copy and partly abstraction method. 2. Expression of tradition has to include all of space, ele-ments, and decoration. In space structure, Korean tra-dition space structure must be applied. 3. In order to design with feeling of Korean tradition, various different Korean elements have to be used. 4. In order to express high quality design, high-quality elements has to be used.

  • In the phase of an architectural designing, the Pinakothek der Modeme in Munich is considered that it is influenced by the Altes Museum in Berlin. The critical elements were composed of the classification of Tominaka and my points of view. Two buildings were analyzed for comparison by six elements, such as, a spatial construction, an organization of plan, an organization of section, a composition of elevation, a method of construction and a composition of mass. The results of the analysis were that the design of the Pinakothek der modeme was influenced by the Altes Museum as follows: 1)the use of square and circle in the composition of plan, 2)the use of a curtain of columns and a formation of the transitional space between columns and front wall, 3)the location and function of the main stairs and the inner court, 4)the arrangement of exhibition halls, 5)the covering of dome, 6)the unification of spaces of different floors through the rotunda. This study may be helpful for any architects who make a decision of the method and the range of reference to some other building in the beginning of design.

  • The design parameter of the heat loss for the pressurized water reactor has been studied. The heat loss from the reactor vessel through the air gap. insulation are analysed by using the computational fluid dynamics code, FLUENT. Parametric study has been performed on the air gap width between the reactor vessel wall and the inner surface of the insulation, and on the insulation thickness. Also evaluated is the performance degradation due to the chimney effect due to gaps left between the panels during the installation of the insulation system. From the analysis results, the optimal with of air gap and insulation thickness and the value of heat loss are obtained The results show how the heat loss varies with the air gap width and insulation thickness. The temperature and the velocity distributions are also presented. From the results of the evaluation. the optimal air gap width and the optimal insulation thickness are obtained. As the difference between the predicted heat loss and measured heat loss from the reactor vessel is construed Primarily as losses due to chimney effect. the contribution of the chimney effect to the total heat loss is quantitatively indicated.

  • The effect of mold rotation on the transport process and resultant macrosegregation pattern during solidification of an Al-Cu alloy contained in a vertical axisymmetric annular mold cooled from the inner wall is numerically investigated. The mold initially at rest starts to rotate at a prescribed angular velocity simultaneously with the beginning of cooling. Computed results for a representative case show that the mold rotation essentially suppresses the development of both thermal and solutal convections in the melt, creating distinct characteristics such as the liquidus front, flow pattern and temperature distribution from those for the stationary mold. Thermal convection which develops at the early stages of cooling is soon extinguished by the rotating flow induced during spin-up, and thus does not effectively remove the initial superheat from the melt. On the other hand, solutal convection, though it weakens considerably and is confined within the mushy zone, still predominates over the solute redistribution process. With increasing the angular velocity, the solute transport in the axial direction is enhanced, whereas that in the radial direction is reduced. The final macrosegregation formed in the mold rotating at moderate angular velocities appears to be favorable in comparison with the stationary casting, in that not only relatively homogenized composition is achieved, but also a severely positive-segregated channel is restrained.

  • The effect of nanofluids on the heat transfer performance of a pulsating heat pipe has been experimentally investigated. Water-based diamond nanofluid and aluminium oxide ($Al_2O_3$) nanofluid were tested in the concentration range of 0.5-5%. The pulsating heat pipe was constructed using clear Pyrex tubes of 1.85 mm in inner diameter in order to visualize the pulsating action. The total number of turns was eight each for heated and cooled parts. The supply temperatures of heating water and cooling water were fixed at $80^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$ respectively. The liquid charging ratio of the nanofluid was 50-70%. The test results showed that the case of 5% concentration of diamond nanofluid showed 18% increase in heat transfer rate compared to pure water. The case of 0.5% concentration of $Al_2O_3$ nanofluid showed 24% increase in heat transfer rate compared to pure water. But the increase of $Al_2O_3$ nanofluid concentration up to 3% did not show further enhancement in heat transfer. It is also observed that the deposited nanoparticles on the tube wall played a major role in enhanced evaporation of working fluid and this could be the reason for the enhancement of heat transfer by a nanofluid, not the enhanced thermal conductivity of the nanofluid.

  • The automatic turbine startup system provides turbine control based on thermal stress. During the startup, control system monitors and evaluates main components of turbine using damage mechanism and life assessment. In case of valve chest, the temperature of inner/outer wall is measured by thermo-couples and the safety of these values are evaluated by using allowable ${\Delta}T$ limit curve during the startup. Because allowable ${\Delta}T$ limit curve includes life assessment, it is possible to apply this curve to turbine control system. In this paper, low cycle fatigue damage and combined rupture and low cycle fatigue damage criterion proposed for yielding the allowable ${\Delta}T$ limit curve of CV(control valve) chest. To calculate low cycle fatigue damage, the stress analysis of valve chest has peformed using FEM. Automatic turbine startup to assure service life of CV was achieved using allowable ${\Delta}T$ limit curve.

  • In recent years, the integrity of reactor Pressure Vessel(RPV) under pressurized thermal shock (PTS) accident has been treated as one of the most critical issues. Under PTS condition, the combination of thermal and mechanical stress by steep temperature gradient and internal pressure causes considerably high tensile stress at the inside of RPV wall. As a result, cracks on inner surface of RPV may experience elastic-plastic behavior which can be characterized by J-integral. In such a case, however, J-integral may possibly lose its vapidity due to the constraint effect. The degree of constraint effect is influenced by the loading mode, crack geometry and material properties. In this paper, in order to investigate the effect of clad thickness and crack geometry on constraint effect, three dimensional finite element analyses were performed for various surface cracks. Total of 27 crack geometries were analyzed and results were presented by a two-parameter characterization based on the J-integral and the f-stress.

  • Repeated ribs are used on heat exchange surfaces to promote turbulence and enhance convective heat transfer. Applications include fuel rods of gas-cooled nuclear reactors, inside cavities of turbine blades, and internal surfaces pipes used in heat exchangers. Despite the great number of literature papers, only few experimental data concern detailed distributions of friction factors and heat transfer coefficients in square channels varying the number of rough walls. This issue is tackled by investigating effects of different number of ribbed walls on heat transfer and friction characteristics in square channel. The rough wall have a 45$^{\circ}$ inclined square rib. Uniform heat flux is maintained on whole inner heat transfer channel area. The heat transfer coefficient and friction factor values increase with increasing the number of rough walls.

  • A fuzzy PID controller is proposed for the posture control of a two DOF robot vehicle inspecting the defects of the inner wall of sewage pipes. The main difficulty in controlling these kinds of vehicles lies in that the center of two mobile shafts does not coincide with the weight center of the vehicle due to its long and wide shape. In this case the previous controller, based on the assumption that the gap between these centers are small, can not guarantee satisfactory transient response characteristics. In this paper, this gap is included in the mathematical modelling of the robot kinematics, and in order to compensate the unsatisfactory transient response characteristics, the fuzzy PID controller is proposed. This controller tunes the PID control gains with respect to the current state of the errors between the reference and the current postures. A series of simulations has been performed to investigate the tracking performance of the proposed controller for the lane changing path and the robustness to the external disturbance. The simulation results show that the proposed controller has a satisfactory tracking performance in the transient state as compared with that of the backstepping control given in reference.
