The effect of a circular hole reinforced by a ring of different material in a plate under biaxial loadings is considered. In this problem, an infinitely large flat is assumed. The reinforcing ring is of uniform rectangular cross-section of same thickness as the plate. The outer boundary of the ring is cemented to the inner boundary of the hole in the plate. The plate is subjected to hydrostatic tension and pure shear loadings. The stress distribution around the hole is obtained by means of the two dimensional theory of elasticity. To conform the validities of above solutions, a series of photo-elastic stress analysis for a composite model was carried out. Fair agreements were observed between two sets of values. The conclusions arrived at are as follows: 1) The theoretical solutions are exact ones for the case of infinitely large flat plate. 2) The solutions can be used for most case of engineering problem if the bonding between the plate and ring is perfect. 3) If the ratio of Young's moduli of the ring and the plate is increased, the stresses in the plate decrease whereas those in the ring increase. 4) The stress concentration near the hole has localized effect. 5) Under hydrostatic tension, maximum principal stress and maximum shear stress increase as the ratio of inner and outer diameters of the ring increases. 6) Under pure shear, the stresses depend upon angular orientations of the points and maximum principal stress and maximum shear stress appear at 45 degree. They increase as the ratio of inner and outer diameters of the ring increases.
The paper concerns an experimental study of fully developed laminar flow of a Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquid in concentric annuli with combined bulk axial flow and inner cylinder rotation. Pressure losses and skin friction coefficients have been measured for Newtonian fluid, water and non-Newtonian fluids, 0.2% aqueous of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and 5% bentonite solutions, when the inner cylinder rotates at the speed of $0{\sim}500$ rpm. The influences of rotation, radius ratio and working fluid on the annular flow field are investigated. And the new correlations among the skin friction coefficient, the Reynolds number and the Rossby number are presented with reasonable limits of accuracy in laminar flow regime.
J-integral for a subsurface horizontal crack in a circular plate with an inner hole under rolling line contact is evaluated according to loading positions with various load conditions, crack length and crack location. Two-dimensional crack is modeled, and the relation between Tresca stress for uncracked model and J-integral is discussed. The loading location which gives the maximum J-integral depends on load condition and crack location, and the presence of friction force increases Tresca stress and J-integral near the surface. Regardless of friction force, crack location that gives maximum J-integral is the same as that of maximum Tresca stress in an uncracked model, and the value of J-integral is propotional to crack length. It is also showed that the variation of an inner radius of a disk does not effect J-integral value.
Large-sized pins are usually used to lift and handle large low speed diesel engine crankshaft. There has then been a need to reduce and optimize the weight of the traditionally used pins. Making an hole by cutting the inside of the pin out was investigated in view of static and fracture strength. To compensate the stress increase caused by the introduction of the inner hole, the groove in the circumferential direction pre-existing on the pin is to be removed. Finite element analysis was carried out for both the original model and weight reduced model. Stress intensity factors for semi-elliptical defects assumed on the pin for the original model and weight reduced model was calculated using the ASME method and compared with the fracture toughness test result of the pin material. The diameter of the cutting hole for the revised model was determined based on the analysis results.
Plate heat exchangers have been widely used in various fields because of their high heat transfer coefficients, small area of installation, and ease of maintenance compared to other heat exchangers. However, when plate heat exchanger is used for a long time, leak can occur due to inner crack. Therefore, it is important to understand the inner flow characteristics in plate heat exchangers. In this study, the inner flow characteristics and flow rate of plate heat exchanger were evaluated using various flow directions, pin-hole sizes, and Reynolds numbers. In downflow, initially most water flowed to the opposite of the inlet due to distribution region. Then it gradually had a uniform distribution due to chevron configuration. In upflow, it had a uniform flow consistently due to the dominant gravity effect. As the Reynolds number increased, the leak rate was decreased due to the inertia effect regardless of the flow direction.
DIN CK35 (JIS S35CK) steels have been used as a material in fuel pump blocks for marine engines. Failures in the inner surface of a drilling hole, due to the initiation of fatigue cracks have been frequently reported. However, the mechanism initiating these cracks and growths has not been clearly diagnosed yet. This study was conducted using a scraped fuel pump block, containing an initiated fatigue crack in the inner surface of a drilling hole. Initially, the cracks and fractured surfaces inside the block were investigated using an optical microscope and a SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope). In addition, microstructure observation, fatigue life test and fatigue crack growth test were performed using a specimen, which was taken from the same block. Results from these tests are summarized as follows; (1) The early crack in the block was supposed to occur inside the inner surface of the drilling hole. (2) The fatigue endurance of this material was about 330 Mpa. (3) The early crack was generated in the cavitations created by the breakdown of a big inclusion, or separation between the big inclusion and the base metal, in which the fundamental ingredients of the inclusion were C, 5, and Mn. (4) In order to prevent these types of failures, the suppression of inclusions inflow by improving the casting process, formation of fine inclusions by applying a heat treatment process, and coating of the surface of the drilling hole were required.
Thermal-fluid analysis was performed to understand the thermal behavior in the horizontal CVD reactor thereby to design a susceptor which has a uniform deposition rate during silicon EPI growing. Four different types of susceptor designs, standard (no hole susceptor), hole $\sharp$1 (240 mm), hole $\sharp$2 (150 mm) and hole $\sharp$3 (60 mm), were simulated by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) tool. Temperature, gas flow, deposition rate and growth rate were calculated and analyzed. The degree of flatness of EPI wafer loaded on the susceptor was computed in terms of silicon growth rate. The simulation results show that the temperature and thermal distribution in the wafer are greatly dependent on inner diameter of hole susceptor and demonstrate that the introduction of hole in the susceptor can degrade wafer flatness. Maximum temperature difference appeared around holes. As the diameter of the hole decreases, flatness of the wafer becomes poor. Among the threes types of susceptors with the hole, optimal design which resulted a good uniform flatness ($5\%$) was obtained when using hole $\sharp$1.
In general means, the stress concentration problem of elastic plate with a rectangular hole can be investigated by numerical methods, and only approximative results are derived. This paper deduces an analytical study of the stress concentration due to a rectangular hole in an elastic plate under bending loads. Base on classical elasticity theory and FEM applying the U-transformation technique, the uncoupled governing equations with 3-DOF are established, and the analytical displacement solutions of the finite element equations are derived in series form or double integral form. Therefore, the stress concentration factor can then be discussed easily and conveniently. For the plate subjected to unidirectional bending loads, the non-conforming plate bending element with four nodes and 12-DOF is taken as examples to demonstrate the application of the proposed method. The inner force distribution is obtained. The solutions are adequate for the condition when the hole is far away from the edges and the thin plate subjected to any transverse loadings.
Recently, the use of aluminum components in the reduction of the vehicle weight to improve fuel efficiency and reduce carbon dioxide emissions has increased. In the aluminum machining cutting process, hole-making is an important process that accounts for 30% of the machining process. Although many studies have been conducted using the continuously advancing hole processing technology, studies on the machinability of the tool depending on the type of chuck on the workpiece are still lacking. In this study, the machining performance of cemented carbide burnishing drills was compared and analyzed according to chuck type. The burnishing drill was used to create a hole in the AL6061 workpiece, and the surface roughness and dimensional accuracy of the hole were examined according to the type of chuck while monitoring the spindle load.
Observations show that the accretion flows in low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs) probably have a two-component structure with an inner hot, optically thin, advection dominated accretion flow (ADAF) and an outer truncated cool, optically thick accretion disk. As shown by Taam et al. (2012), within the framework of the disk evaporation model, the truncation radius as a function of mass accretion rate is strongly affected by including the magnetic field. We define the parameter ${\beta}$ as $p_m=B^2/8{\pi}=(1-{\beta})p_{tot}$, (where $p_{tot}=p_{gas}+p_m$, $p_{gas}$ is gas pressure and $p_m$ is magnetic pressure) to describe the strength of the magnetic field in accretion flows. It is found that an increase of the magnetic field (decreasing the value of ${\beta}$) results in a smaller truncation radius for the accretion disk. We calculate the emergent spectrum of an inner ADAF + an outer truncated accretion disk around a supermassive black hole by considering the effects of the magnetic field on the truncation radius of the accretion disk. By comparing with observations, we found that a weaker magnetic field (corresponding to a bigger value of ${\beta}$) is required to match the observed correlation between $L_{2-10keV}/L_{Edd}$ and the bolometric correction $k_{2-10keV}$, which is consistent with the physics of the accretion flow with a low mass accretion rate around a black hole.
