Effect of Fuel Injector-type Spark Plug on Combustion Characteristics

  • This study proposes a new stratified charge system for low emission and ultra lean burn. In order to examine combustion characteristics of the new system, sparkplug with a hole at positive pole and a common CNG injector for injecting fuel were used in this study as injector-type spark plug. The new stratified charge system injects fuel of extremely small quantities and ignites mixture around sparkplug gap. Also, the system was fitted in a visualized constant volume chamber. Then, for analysis of the combustion characteristics, we examined combustion pressure, lean inflammable limit, and visualized combustion flame according to equivalence ratio by comparison with homogeneous charge (HC) method and the new stratified charge (SC) method. As results of this study, in the case of using this system, the propagation speed of initial flame was increased and total combustion period was reduced in the ultra lean burn in the same equivalence ratio. These phenomena occurred clearly under the conditions of lean equivalence ratio. Furthermore, the lean inflammable limit of mixture was extended by using the injector-type spark plug.

  • The technologies employing spray-guided type combustion system for ultra-lean combustion direct injection engine is focused as a promising technology for satisfying emission regulations and improving fuel economy. In the present study, control and design optimization of lean-burn LPG direct injection engine was carried out with control strategy and injection position changes. Inter-injection spark ignition strategy was applied and the effect of the strategy was assessed at relatively higher load operation condition than previous researches. In order to create richer mixture in the vicinity of spark plug electrode, relative distance between the dead-end of injector and the electrode of spark plug was changed.

  • Mixture formation is one of the significant factors to improve combustion performance of an spark ignition engine. This is affected by spray and atomization characteristics of injector. In the case of EGI system, air-fuel mixing period is so short that a lot of fuel-film and liquid-fuel flow into cylinder. Since this fuel-film is not burnt perfectly in cylinder, it is exhausted in the form of HC emission. In this paper, three measurement techniques were utilized to measure spray characteristics and the amount of fuel-film in the cylinder. At first, PMAS was used to measure the spray characteristics such as size distributions, SMD, and spray angle. Secondly the amount and distribution of fuel-film which flow into through intake valve could be measured quantitatively using the fuel-film measuring device. And lastly, by optical fiber type spark plug used to detect the diffusion flame, the amount of unburned HC was measured. As the result of these experiments, the information of optimal spray characteristics and injection condition to minimize fuel-film could be built up.

  • Today gasoline engines for vehicular application are not only faced with stringent emission regulation but also with increasing requirements to better fuel economy, while guaranteeing power density. The spray-guided type gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine has an advantage of improved thermal efficiency and lower harmful emissions. Centrally mounted high pressure injector and adjacent spark plug allow stable lean combustion due to the flexible mixture stratification. In the present study, the performance and emissions characteristics of developed spray-guided type GDI combustion system were evaluated at various excess air ratio conditions. The specific fuel consumption and nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$) emissions were reduced due to the achievement of stable lean combustion under flammability limit. Multiple injection strategy was not helpful to improve fuel consumption while further reduction of $NO_x$ emissions was possible.

  • 오늘날 전 세계의 자동차 회사들은 연비를 향상시키고 배기가스를 저감시키기 위해 다양한 기술을 개발하고 있다. 그 중 직접분사식 초희박 연소기술은 연료제어의 정확도를 향상시켜 연소 효율을 극대화하고 초희박 연소를 통해 연비를 향상 시킬 수 있는 차세대 기술로 평가받고 있다. 따라서 기존 가스엔진에 초희박 직접분사 기술을 적용한 초희박 LPG 직접분사 엔진을 개발하기 위해 $2{\ell}$ 급 MPI 엔진을 베이스 엔진으로 실린더 헤드를 재설계하였다. 재설계된 헤드는 초희박 연소를 구현하기 위해 인젝터와 점화플러그가 헤드 중앙에 장착되는 분무유도방식 연소시스템을 적용하였다. 연료 분사 압력별 연료 분사 시기와 점화 시기의 변경을 통해 연료 소비율과 연소 안정성을 측정하였으며 이를 통해 최적연료 분사시기와 점화시기를 선정하였다.

  • Since air pollution problem by emissions from automotive vehicles has become social issues, lean-burn gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine is focused as an alternative to meet the requirement of reinforced emission regulation and improved fuel consumption. Spray-guided type DI combustion is promising technology, which characterized by the centrally mounted injector and closely positioned spark plug, since stable lean combustion can be realized even at ultra-lean mixture condition. In the present study, the effect of multi-ignition with developed charge coil on combustion and emission characteristics was investigated in optical accessible single cylinder engine. In order to fully understand the in-cylinder phenomena and the mechanisms of emission production, optical diagnostics, such as flame visualization was also carried out at frequently using operating condition. Multi-ignition is effective to improve fuel economy but increase NOx emission at flammability limit.

초희박 LPG 직접분사식 엔진에서 질소산화물 저감을 위한 배기재순환 적용성 평가 (Evaluation of EGR applicability for NOx reduction in lean-burn LPG direct injection engine)

  • LPG가 수송용 연료로서 경쟁력을 유지하기 위해서는 지속적인 기술개발을 통해 휘발유와의 연비격차를 감소시키고 후처리시스템 등에 의한 가격 부담을 낮추어야 한다. 이에 본 연구에서는 안정적인 희박연소 구현을 통한 연비개선을 얻기 위해 실린더 중앙에 점화플러그와 연료분사기가 인접해 있고, 연료가 분사된 후 바로 점화가 이루어지도록 하는 분무유도방식의 LPG 직접분사엔진을 개발의 일환으로 연소제어인자의 변화에 따른 연소 특성을 분석하였다. 안정적인 연소를 위해 국부적으로 농후한 혼합기를 형성하는 성층희박연소의 특성상 일정 수준이상의 질소산화물이 배출되는 문제점을 갖고 있다. 질소산화물 저감을 위해 EGR을 적용한 결과 연료소비율과 THC의 배출은 약간 증가하지만 $NO_x$배출은 약 15% 저감되었다. EGR 적용에 의한 연소속도의 감소는 초기 화염발달 시기에 집중되어 나타났으며 흡입공기의 희석효과에 의해 EGR율이 증가할수록 최대 열방출율 및 열방출율 증가 기울기가 감소하였다.
