An Experimental Study on Cooling Characteristics for Uni-element Injector face according to the Swirl Chamber in Fuel Injector (연료 인젝터 스월 챔버 유무에 따른 단일 인젝터 페이스 냉각 특성 연구)

  • We made two injectors that were equal to all design except for existence or nonexistence of swirl chamber of fuel part, because we want to find cooling characteristics at the injector face according to existence or non existence of swirl chamber of fuel part. And we set regenerative cooling channel in injector face for protecting injector face for prolonged combustion time. Two injectors were performed hot firing test, and then we compared cooling characteristics of two injectors. Also we compared O/F ratio effects on cooling characteristics and combustion characteristics.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose a method for protecting injector face for prolonged combustion time and heat flux measurement technique at the injector face. To obtain basic design data and verify the performance of the proposed method, a regenerative cooling injector face was designed and manufactured for the hot firing test. Due to the safety reason, hot fire test were performed 3, 10, 30, 60 and 120 seconds time step. The discrepancy between analytical results adapting to combustion and nozzle and experimental results is believed due to the over estimation of the convection heat transfer calculation. for the injector face, flow velocity is almost negligible, therefore radiation is more important than convection. Consecutive hot firing test during 10, 30, 60 and 120 seconds combustion time shows good repeatability.

  • An optimal fuel manifold is suggested to improve the cooling performance of injector face plate. The cooling performance at the center area of the injector face plate is to be augmented while the spatial injection uniformity is maintained. The comparison of the cooling performance of 7 candidates gives the conclusion that the dividing plate from 2-3 injector row to 9-10 injector row is an optimal. The maximum face plate temperature decreases by $27\%$ while the injection uniformity is close to that of the original design. The pressure drop in the fuel manifold of the optimal design is also same as the original design.

  • This study aims to provide basic design data for a pintle injector and its combustion device through case study on the research and development of combustion devices to which a liquid-liquid pintle injector was applied. From data analysis, it was possible to provide the initial dimension of the combustion chamber and pintle injector based on the engine thrust, and the geometric characteristics of the high-efficiency injector. In addition, the pintle tip heat damage prevention mechanism and materials, face-shutoff pintle injector implementation method, and central propellant selection criteria were summarized. Theses results will be used as basic data for the design criteria of an initial pintle injector combustion device.

  • Experimental studies on determination of the supply leading time of propellants to combustion chamber have been made to stably and efficiently guarantee the ignition process with liquid rocket engine. The propellant used is a Jet A-1 as fuel and a liquid oxygen as oxidizer. Unlike impinging FOOF type of injectors are arranged radially and the designed O/F ratio is 2.34. The present experiment program also includes the stability on the quadlet type of ignitor using the triethylalumimum as an ignition source and injector life tests. Experimental results clarifies that the propellant supply through LOx leading to combustion chamber is proper for stable ignition and combustion processes based on the fuel and oxidizer manifold pressures, combustion chamber pressure, and the variation of flame length from the nozzle exit with lapse time, and shows that the leading supply time of propellants affects the engine performance little. The effect of positioning cooling holes is remarkable to protect the injector face.

The results of cold flow test, ignition test and combustion test of the sub-scale combustor are also given in this paper. The sub-scale combustor uses liquid oxygen(LOx) and kerosene as propellants and has a injector head, an ablative material combustor wall and a water cooled nozzle. The injector head has LOx manifold, fuel manifold, fire face plate, one center swirl injector and 18 main swirl injectors. The cold flow, ignition and combustion tests were successfully performed without damage of combustor. Results of hot firing tests show that combustion efficiency meets the target of design and operations of start and stop cyclogram are stable and high frequency combustion instability does not occur.

  • The combustion test results of the sub-scale combustor having dual swirl injector with internal mixing for a liquid rocket engine are described. The sub-scale combustor uses liquid oxygen(LOx) and kerosene as propellants and has an injector head, an ablative material combustor wall and a water cooled nozzle. The injector head has LOx manifold, fuel manifold, fire face plate, one center swirl injector and 18 main swirl injectors of internal mixing. The combustion tests were successfully performed at design and off-design points without any damages on the injectors. Combustion characteristics velocity of 1756m/s was measured at design point. High frequency combustion instability was not observed but low frequency pulsations occurred at off-design conditions.

  • Urea-SCR, the selective catalytic reduction using urea as reducing agent, has been investigated for about 10 years in detail and today is a well established technique for deNOx of stationary diesel engines. In the case of the SCR-catalyst a non-uniform velocity and $NH_3$ profile will cause an inhomogeneous conversion of the reducing agent $NH_3$, resulting in a local breakthrough of $NH_3$ or increasing NOx emissions. Therefore, this work investigates the effect of flow and $NH_3$ non-uniformities on the deNOx performance and $NH_3$ slip in a Urea-SCR exhaust system. From the results of this study, it is found that flow and $NH_3$ distribution within SCR monolith is strongly related with deNOx performance of SCR catalyst. It is also found that multi-hole injector shows better $NH_3$ uniformity at the face of SCR monolith face than one hole injector.
