  • This paper presents an experimental study on the effect of double injection strategies on combustion characteristics in a single-cylinder diesel engine. These studies are applied to the double injection strategies, such as $2^{nd}$ injection timing variations with fixed injection interval (8 degree) and variations of injection pressures with fixed injection timing and intervals. The injection quantity was 7 + 7 mg for double injections, and 14 mg for single injection. When the injection pressure was increased, the ignition delay was shortened, and the ISFC (indicated specific fuel consumption) was increased due to the fast termination of combustion by the shortened energizing duration. In addition, the retardation of injection timings toward TDC (top dead center) caused the reduction of ignition delay and the decrease of ISFC with the decrease of FMEP (friction mean effective pressure).

  • Injection pressure, an important factor in filling process, should be minimized to enhance injection molding quality. Injection pressure can be controlled by valve gate open timing. In this work, we decided the valve gate open timing to minimize the injection pressure. To solve this design problem, we integrated MAPS-3D (Mold Analysis and Plastic Solution-3Dimension), a commercial injection molding CAE tool, to PIAnO (Process Integration, Automation and Optimization), a commercial PIDO (Process Integration, and Design Optimization) tool using the file parsing method. In order to reduce computational cost, we performed an approximate optimization using meta-models that replaced expensive computer simulations. At first, we carried out DOE (Design of Experiments) using OLHD (Optimal Latin Hypercube Design) available in PIAnO. Then, we built Kriging models using the simulation results at the sampling points. Finally, we used micro GA (Genetic Algorithm) available in PIAnO. Using the proposed design approach, the injection pressure has been reduced by 13.7% compared to the initial one. This design result clearly shows the validity of the proposed design approach.

  • This paper investigates the steady-state combustion characteristics of the Homogeneous charge compression ignition(HCCI) engine with variable valve timing(VVT) and dimethyl ether(DME) direct injection, to find out its benefits in exhaust gas emissions. HCCI combustion is an attractive way to lower carbon dioxide($CO_2$), nitrogen oxides(NOx) emission and to allow higher fuel conversion efficiency. However, HCCI engine has inherent problem of narrow operating range at high load due to high in-cylinder peak pressure and consequent noise. To overcome this problem, the control of combustion start and heat release rate is required. It is difficult to control the start of combustion because HCCI combustion phase is closely linked to chemical reaction during a compression stroke. The combination of VVT and DME direct injection was chosen as the most promising strategy to control the HCCI combustion phase in this study. Regular gasoline was injected at intake port as main fuel, while small amount of DME was also injected directly into the cylinder as an ignition promoter for the control of ignition timing. Different intake valve timings were tested for combustion phase control. Regular gasoline was tested for HCCI operation and emission characteristics with various engine conditions. With HCCI operation, ignition delay and rapid burning angle were successfully controlled by the amount of internal EGR that was determined with VVT. For best IMEP and low HC emission, DME should be injected during early compression stroke. IMEP was mainly affected by the DME injection timing, and quantities of fuel DME and gasoline. HC emission was mainly affected by both the amount of gasoline and the DME injection timing. NOx emission was lower than conventional SI engine at gasoline lean region. However, NOx emission was similar to that in the conventional SI engine at gasoline rich region. CO emission was affected by the amount of gasoline and DME.

  • This study is to investigate the effect of the cetane number in ultra low sulfur diesel fuel on combustion characteristics and exhaust emissions at 1500 rpm and 2.6bar BMEP in low-temperature diesel combustion with 1.9L common rail direct injection diesel engine. Low-temperature diesel combustion was achieved by adopting external high EGR rate with the strategic injection control without modification of engine components. Test fuels are ultra low sulfur diesel fuel (sulfur less than 12 ppm) with two cetane numbers (CN), i.e., CN30 and CN55. For the CN30 fuel, as a start of injection (SOI) timing is retarded, the duration of an ignition delay was decreased while still longer than $20^{\circ}CA$ for all the SOI timings. In the meanwhile, the CN55 fuel showed that an ignition delay was monotonically extended as an SOI timing is retarded but much shorter than that of the CN30 fuel. The duration of combustion for both fuels was increased as an SOI timing is retarded. For the SOI timing for the minimum BSFC, the CN30 produced nearly zero PM much less than the CN55, while keeping the level of NOx and the fuel consumption similar to the CN55 fuel. However, the CN30 produced more THC and CO than the CN55 fuel, which may come from the longer ignition delay of CN30 to make fuel and air over-mixed.

  • To meet strict emission regulation while improving engine performances, common rail injection system which is suitable for electronic control, and capable of controlling injection quantity, timing, rate and pressure individually as well as realizing high pressure has been developed. At present study, a 8L DI diesel engine was converted to a single-cylinder experimental engine allowing optical access through an extended piston and a prototype of common rail injector in progress was applied to the engine. The combustion characteristics of the engine were analysed by using direct images and characteristics of the injector were analysed. We can not say that the results are always the same to general common rail injection system but that they are just characteristics of specific prototype injector.

  • This study is to investigate the effects of water induction through the air intake system on the characteristics of combustion and exhaust emissions in diesel engine. The effects of water induction through the air intake port were considered in IDI diesel engine in this study. The formation of NOx was significantly suppressed by decreasing the gas peak temperature during the initial combustion process because the water play a role as a heat sink during evaporating in the combustion chamber, but the smoke was slightly increased with increased water amount. Also, NOx significantly decreased with increase in water amount. A simultaneous reduction in smoke and NOx emissions can be obtained when water is injected into the combustion chamber by retarding the fuel injection timing more than without water injection.

  • Initial flame development and propagation were visualized under different fuel injection timings to relate the initial flame development to the engine stability in a port injection SI engine. Experiments were performed in an optical single cylinder engine modified from a production engine and images were captured through the quartz window mounted in the piston by an intensified CCD camera. Stratification state was controlled by varying injection timing. Under each injection condition, the flame images were captured at the pre-set crank angles. These were averaged and processed to characterize the flame. The flame stability was estimated by the weighted average of flame area, luminosity, and standard deviation of flame area. Results show that stratification state according to injection timing did not affect on the direction of flame propagation. The flame development and the initial flame stability are strongly dependent on the stratified conditions and the initial flame stability governs the engine stability and lean misfire limit.

  • As part of an evaluation for an in-vessel severe accident management strategy, a coolant injection into the reactor vessel under depressurization of the reactor coolant system (RCS) has been evaluated in detail using the SCDAP/RELAP5 computer code. A high-pressure sequence of a small break loss of coolant accident (SBLOCA) has been analyzed in the Optimized Power Reactor (OPR) 1000. The SCDAP/RELAP5 results have shown that safety injection timing and capacity with RCS depressurization timing and capacity are very effective on the reactor vessel failure during a severe accident. Only one train operation of the high pressure safety injection (HPSI) for 30,000 seconds with RCS depressurization prevents failure of the reactor vessel. In this case, the operation of only the low pressure safety injection (LPSI) without a HPSI does not prevent failure of the reactor vessel.

  • Increasing air pollution levels and the global oil crisis has become a major hindrance in the growth of our automobile sector. Traditional Internal Combustion engines running on non-renewable fuels are proving to be the major culprit for the harmful effects on environment. With few modifications and also with assistance of few additional components current small SI engines can be modified into a pneumatic engine (commonly known as Compressed Air Engines) without much technical complications where the working fluid is compressed air. The working principle is very basic as adiabatic expansion of the compressed air takes place inside the cylinder pushing the piston downwards creating enough MEP to run the crank shaft at decent RPM. With the assistance of new research and development on pneumatic engines can explore the potential of pneumatic engines as a viable option over IC engines. The paper deals with analysis on RPM variation with corresponding compressed air injection at different crank angles from TDC keeping constant injection time period. Similarly RPM variation can also be observed at different injection pressures with similar injection angle variation. A setup employing a combination of magnetic switch (reed switch), magnets and solenoid valve is used in order to injection timing control. A conclusive data is obtained after detailed analysis of RPM variation that can be employed in newly modified pneumatic engines in order to enhance the running performance. With a number of benefits offered by pneumatic engine over IC engines such as no emissions, better efficiency, low running cost, light weight accompanied by optimized injection conditions can cause a significant development in pneumatic engines without any major alteration.

  • The effects of fuel injection system on the performance in a V8-type diesel engine was stuided in this paper. Fuel injection system is important factor which influence the engine performance and exhaust emission bcasuse the properties in the injected fuel depend on the atomization characteristics. In this study using diesel engine of 17.7:1 compression ration the engine performance and exhaust emission are measured experimentally according to 1000, 1400, 2200rpm in the full-load conditions. The chosen parameters for the major system are such diameter shape of combustion chamber and intake system. The results are as follows: As the nozzle hole diameter and injection angle become smaller and as the injection timing gets advanced the fuel consumption and concentration of smoke are decreasing whereas concentration of $NO_{x}$ is increasing. Andconcentration of $NO_{x}$ is increasing in accordance with the increase of injection pipe diameter and nozzle protrusion. Also it is shown that re-entrant type combustion chamber is more effective than that of toroidal type in the improvement of $NO_{x}$ reduction.
