A Theoretical Study on Flow and Pressure Variation Characteristics of Fuel Supply System in Diesel Engine (디젤엔진 연료계통의 유동 및 압력 변동특성에 관한 이론적 연구)

  • Combustion phenomenon in diesel engine is mainly governed by characteristics of fuel injection and fuel spray system affected by its dimensions and operating condition. Fuel supply system is consisted of fuel injection pump, high pressure pipe and injection nozzle. In order to develope the more economical diesel fuel injection system, it is in need to carryout the fairly wide range experiments, which is quite impossible. Therefore, theoretical analysis for the numberous parameters is powerful method in this case. In the present study, equations of continuity of fuel oil in fuel injection system are solved to obtain the flow and pressure variation in diesel fuel system affected by injection pump speed, plunger diameter, pipe length and nozzle opening pressure.

  • Recently, the need of thin-walled injection molding and enhancement of its productivity is greatly increased. In this study, we designed and manufactured a injection molding system, which can mold a part with the thickness of $500{\mu}m$ and 8 cavity. And processing technique for the multi-cavity injection molding system, which is capable of mass productivity on the plastic parts, was considered. The problems of unbalance/imbalance on the molding process for the multi-cavity mold were predicted by numerical analysis using plastic injection molding commercial code. In addition, controllable system of melt front filling was introduced for a balanced filling using the mold temperature sensor on injection mold. It was shown that balanced filling with the suggested injection molding system was possible for $500{\mu}m$ plastic parts with 8 cavity layout.

  • Fuel injection system is very important in diesel combustion. Recently electronic control of fuel injection system and common rail systems are introduced to reduce the emission and to increase the energy efficiency from diesel engine by control of the injection timing and duration. In this study, evaluation possibility of the system for electronic control by spool valve, one of the accumulator type injection systems with spool valve using solenoid was composed and the operating characteristics were investigated to evaluate the effects of spring coefficient, initial spring force, solenoid driving time, fuel supply pressure on the injection timing and duration. We could confirm the capability that diesel injection was electronically controlled by spool valve.

  • An expert system is developed for rational and efficient design of multi-component injection molding which is a fairly new manufacturing technique to produce plastic parts by injecting two or more materials sequentially using multiple injection units in a single machine into a single rotary mold. The knowledge base used in the present design system is primarily composed of two parts ; knowledge from domain expert and knowledge from CAE analysis. The present expert system has hour main modules ; general design guidelines for injection molding specific guidelines for multi-component injection molding redesign guidelines from the result of the CAE analysis and finally troubleshooting for multi-component injection molding. To show the validity of the present design methodology two shop floor design problems were tested ; design and fabrication of timing belt cover and power window's assist knob by using multi-component injection molding.

A Direct Injection-mixing Total-flow-control Boom Sprayer System (주입식 총유량 자동제어방식 분관 방제기의 개발)

  • A direct injection sprayer was designed using the concepts of injection mixing and total flow control, flowrate-based system compensating for the variation of forwarding speed. A metered rate, proportionally to the actual diluent flow rate, of a tracer chemical was injected directly into the diluent stream. The injection of chemical may improve the precision and safety of chemical application process. The control system was evaluated for the variables of the control interval, tolerances and sensitivities of flow regulation valve and injection pump. Performance of the system was assessed as that the response time of flow rate, response time of injection rate, absolute steady state error, and the coefficient of variance(C.V.) of concentration were 8.5 and -0.53 seconds, 0.067 lpm(0.8%) and 3.15%, respectively, at optimal parameters of control interval of 1.0 sec, fast sensitivity of flow regulation valve, medium sensitivity of injection pump and medium tolerance of flow rate. Performance of the system can be improved by increasing the sensitivity of flow regulating valve and employing a high resolution velocimeter, such as Doppler radar.

  • In the DI diesel engine of passenger cars, common rail injection system have been used to improve the engine performance and reduce the exhaust emission by controlling injection timing, injection pattern, and injection duration. In case that common rail injection system is applied to high speed DI diesel engine, it is necessary to have high response and good repetition characteristics. These characteristics of injector depend on the characteristics of solenoid. Thus, to apply the common rail injection system in the high speed diesel engine, we had designed and made a multi-pole solenoid, and carried out repetition, response test to compare the multi-pole solenoid with the gasoline Injector solenoid. The result shows that repetition and response characteristics of multi-pole solenoid have better characteristics than the gasoline injector solenoid.

  • Fuel injection system greatly affects the performance of a direct injection diesel engine. A common rail injection system was introduced to satisfy the stringent emission standards, low fuel consumption, and low noise in recent years. The performance of a common-rail fuel injection system is strongly influenced by the injector characteristics. The common rail injector has evolved in order to improve its injection performance. The piezo-actuated injector is more suitable for common rail injection system due to its fast response and is expected to replace current solenoid-operated injector. In this study, nonlinear mathematical models are proposed for the solenoid-operated and the piezo-actuated injectors for control applications. Based on these models, the injection rate, which is one of the most important factors for the injection characteristics, is estimated using sliding mode observer. The simulation results and the experimental data show that the proposed sliding mode observers can effectively estimate the injection timing and the injection rate for both common-rail injectors.

  • To reduce the soot and NOx simultaneously, a new system of stratified injection is developed. This system discharges stratified diesel-methanol in a D. I. Diesel Engine. Nozzle and delivery valve of conventional injection system were remodeled to inject diesel and methanol from one injector sequently. The quantity of diesel and methanol was controled precisely by micrometers mounted on the injection control lack. The real injection ratio of dual fuel was measured by volumetric ratio. We could confirm the capabilities that soot and NOx simultaneously were reduced by diesel-methanol stratified injection from the results of in-cylinder pressure data obtained from combustion experiment by stratified injection, heat release rate and mass fraction bumed.

  • Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has been used as motor fuel due to its low emissions and low cost. The fuel feeding system has been improved with stringent requirement for exhaust emissions. LPG carburetion system was first introduced, then the system has been changed to a precisely controlled gas injection system, but this gas feeding system has a limitation on improving power output. In order to improve an engine performance, a multi-point port injection system was introduced recently, and a liquid direct injection system into a cylinder was suggested as a next generation system to maximize a fuel economy as well as a power. This study addresses the analysis of the LPG spray from diesel injectors. The spray images are visualized and compared with diesel sprays in a wide injection pressure range. The photographs show much wider dispersion of LPG sprays.

  • As a fundamental study on developing elements with micro shape, micro mold parts machining and experiment of injection molding using it were performed. The ultra precision micro machining system with high functionality was fabricated, and utilized in the machining of micro parts. By using this machining system and micro end-mill tool, a micro circle column structure of high aspect ratio, diameter 60 $\mu\textrm{m}$, height 500 $\mu\textrm{m}$, was fabricated. And a micro lens molds were fabricated by using ball end-mill tool of 300 $\mu\textrm{m}$ diameter and diamond fly-cut tool of 150 $\mu\textrm{m}$ radius. A micro injection molding machine, which is clamping force 1.75 ton, injection capacity 2.8cc, was fabricated for injection molding experiment using micro molds. The injection molding experiment was performed by using the injection molding machine, micro cylinder structures and lens molds. This paper introduces these micro machining system and injection molding machine and demonstrates examples of injection molding using fabricated molds.
