For investigating the effect of fuel stratification on flame propagation, initial flame development and propagation were visualized under different axially stratified states in a port injection SI engine. Stratification was controlled by the combination of the port swirl ratio and injection timing. Experiments were performed in an optical single cylinder engine modified from a production engine and images were captured through the quartz window mounted in the piston by an intensified CCD camera. Firstly in this paper, the characteristics under no port-generated swirl condition, i.e. normal conventional case was studied. Under various stratified conditions, flame images were captured at the pre-set crank angles. These were averaged and processed to characterize the flames propagation. The flame stability was estimated by the weighted average of flame area and luminosity. The stability was also evaluated through the standard deviation of flame area and propagation distance, and mean absolute deviation of propagating direction. Results show that stratification state according to injection timing do not affect on the direction of flame propagation. The flame development and the initial flame stability are strongly dependent on the stratified conditions and the initial flame stability is closely related to the engine stability and lean misfire limit.
The objective of this work is to analyze the atomization and evaporation characteristics of dimethyl ether(DME) fuel for the application of HCCI diesel engine. In order to investigate the spray behavior of DME fuel, the macroscopic and microscopic characteristics were investigated in terms of spray development, spray tip penetration, impingement time, SMD, and axial mean velocity under the various injection timing and ambient conditions. For the illumination of spray, the spray visualization system was composed of a Nd:YAG laser and an ICCD camera and laser-sheet method was used. The atomization characteristics of DME fuel are analyzed by using phase Doppler particle analyzer (PDPA) system It was reveal that the spray development of DME is slower and rapidly disappeared as elapsed time after start of injection at the same injection duration. The impingement timing of diesel fuel was fester than that of DME fuel. The comparison of spray atomization characteristics in both fuels shows that diesel fuel has a large SMD value that DME.
Hydrogen is seen as one of the important energy vectors of the next century. Hydrogen as a renewable energy source, provides the potential for a sustainable development particularly in the transportation sector. Hydrogen driven vehicles reduce both local as well as global emissions. The laboratory of transporttechnology (University of Gent) converted a GM/Crusader V-8 engine for hydrogen use. Once the engine is optimised, it will be built in a low-floor midsize hydrogen city bus for public demonstration. For a complete control of the combustion process and to increase the resistance to backfire (explosion of the air-fuel mixture in the inlet manifold), a sequential timed multipoint injection of hydrogen and an electronic management system is chosen. The results as a function of the engine parameters (ignition timing. injection timing and duration, injection pressure) we given. Special focus is given to topics related to the use of hydrogen as a fuel: ignition characteristics (importance of electrode distance), quality of the lubricating oil (crankcase gases with high contents of hydrogen), oxygen sensors (very lean operating conditions), noise reduction (configuration and length of inlet pipes). The advantages and disadvantages of a power regulation only by the air to fuel ratio (as for diesel engines) against a throttle regulation (normal gasoline or gas regulation) are examined. Finally the goals of the development of the engine are reached: power output of 90 kW, torque of 300 Nm, extremely low emission levels and backfire-safe operation.

Since the oil shock of 1970's there was a strong upward tendency for the use of the high viscosity and poorer quality fuels. Therefore the misfiring engine occurs due to the decrease of quantity injected for lean burn and emission control in CI diesel engine. In this study, it is designed and used the test bed which is installed with turbocharger and intercooler. In addition to equipped using CRDI by controlling injection timing with mapping modulator, it has been tested and analyzed the engine performance, combustion characteristics, and emission as operating parameters.
Soot has a great effect on the formation of PM (Particulate Matter) in D.I. (Direct Injection) Diesel engines. Soot in diesel flame is formed by incomplete combustion when the fuel atomization and mixture formation were poor. Therefore, the understanding of soot formation in a D.I. diesel engine is mandatory to reduce PM in exhaust gas. To investigate soot formation in diesel combustion, various measurements have been performed with laser diagnostics. In this study, the relative soot diameter and the relative number density in a DJ. engine was measured by using LIS (Laser Induced Scattering) and LII (Laser Induced Incandescence) methods simultaneously which are planar imaging techniques. And a visualization D.I. diesel engine was used to introduce a laser beam into the combustion chamber and investigate the diffusion flame characteristics. To find the optimal condition that reduces soot formation in diesel combustion, various injection timing and the swirl flow in the cylinder using the SCV (Swirl Control Valve) were applied. From this experiment, the effects of injection timing and swirl on soot formation were established. Effective reduction of soot formation is possible through the control of these two factors.

This paper described the effect of the multiple injections on the stability of combustion and emission characteristics in a direct injection diesel engine at various operating conditions. In order to investigate the influence of multiple injections in a diesel engine, the fuel injection timing was varied one main injection and two pilot injections at various conditions. The experimental apparatus consisted of DI diesel engine with four cylinders, EC dynamometer, multi-stage injection control system, and exhaust emissions analyzer. The combustion and emission characteristics were analyzed for the main, pilot-main injection, pilot-pilot-main injection strategies. It is revealed that the combustion pressure was smoothly near the top dead center and the coefficient of variations is reduced due to the effect of pilot injection. Also, $NO_x$ emissions are dramatically decreased with pilot injection because the decrease of rate of heat release. However, the soot is increased at early pilot injection and main injection.

Cooled EGR system is widely used to reduce NOx emissions in diesel engine. But when EGR rate was increased, combustion stability was worsened and PM level was increased. So determining optimized control point of EGR rate is important. In order to determine this point, it is important to figure out the effect of EGR system on the exhaust emissions. In this research, NOx and PM emissions were analyzed with various coolant temperature supplied to the EGR cooler at several positions such as downstream of turbocharger, upstream and downstream of DPF. Effects of some variables such as EGR rate, hot / cooled EGR and change of injection timing were estimated. And $CO_2$ emissions were measured at exhaust and intake manifold to calculate EGR rate at each engine operating condition. Also combustion analysis was performed in each engine operating conditions. In the result of this study, there was trade-off between NOx emissions and PM emissions. When EGR rate was increased, combustion pressure was decreased and COV of IMEP was increased.

In this study, numerical calculation is carried out to investigate the influence of injection timing, fuel amount, intake $O_2$ concentration, and EGR on Nitric Oxide(NO) formation using a two-zone model in a diesel engine. Results can be summarized as follows. The NO formation is very sensitive to the burned gas temperature, so multi-zone model must be applied to combustion process to predict the burned gas temperature exactly. Since the burned gas temperature increases rapidly during the premixed combustion, most NO is formed within 20 crank angle degrees after ignition. As the injection timing is retarded, the combustion occurs later in the expansion process which causes the decrease of burned gas temperature and, as a result, NO formation decrease. The increase of fuel amount results in the increase of earlier formation of NO in the engine. As the intake $O_2$ concentration increases, the maximum pressure and burned gas temperature increase due to activate combustion. And, [O] mole fraction of equilibrium combustion products also increase. Therefore NO exponentially increases. If exhaust gas is recirculated, the burned gas temperature decreases which results in NO decrease. If exhaust gas is cooled, more NO can be decreased.

Objective: To analyze the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) of femoral artery pseudoaneurysm (FAP), identify a suitable location and timing for percutaneous thrombin injection (PTI) based on this analysis, and report our clinical experience with the procedure. Materials and Methods: CFD can be used to analyze the hemodynamics of the human body. An analysis using CFD recommended that the suitable location of the needle tip for PTI is at the center of the aneurysm sac and the optimal timing for starting PTI is during the early inflow phase of blood into the sac. Since 2011, seven patients (three male and four female; median age, 60 years [range, 43-75 years]) with FAP were treated with PTI based on the devised suitable location and time. Prior to the procedure, color Doppler ultrasonography was performed to determine the location and timing of the thrombin injection. Results: The technical success rate of the PTI was 100%. The amount of thrombin used for the procedure ranged from 200 IU to 1000 IU (median, 500 IU). None of the patients experienced any symptoms or signs of embolic complications during the procedure. Follow-up CT images did not reveal any embolism in the lower extremities and showed complete thrombosis of the pseudoaneurysm. Conclusion: Based on our study of CFD, PTI administered centrally in the FAP during early inflow, as seen on color Doppler, can be an effective technique.

Fuel injection system greatly affects the performance of a direct injection diesel engine. A common rail injection system was introduced to satisfy the stringent emission standards, low fuel consumption, and low noise in recent years. The performance of a common-rail fuel injection system is strongly influenced by the injector characteristics. The common rail injector has evolved in order to improve its injection performance. The piezo-actuated injector is more suitable for common rail injection system due to its fast response and is expected to replace current solenoid-operated injector. In this study, nonlinear mathematical models are proposed for the solenoid-operated and the piezo-actuated injectors for control applications. Based on these models, the injection rate, which is one of the most important factors for the injection characteristics, is estimated using sliding mode observer. The simulation results and the experimental data show that the proposed sliding mode observers can effectively estimate the injection timing and the injection rate for both common-rail injectors.
