In the global ship structure and vibration analysis, the FE(finite element) analysis model is required in the early design stage before the 3D CAD model is defined. And the analysis model generation process is a time-consuming job and takes much more time than the engineering work itself. In particular, ship structure has too many associated structural members such as stringers, stiffness and girders etc. These structural members should be satisfied as the constraints in analysis modeling. Therefore it is necessary to support generation of analysis model with satisfying these constraints as an automatic manner. For the effective support of the global ship analysis modeling, a method to generate analysis model using initial design information within ship design process, that hull form offset data and compartment data, is developed. In order to easily handle initial design information and FE model information, flexible data structure is proposed. An automatic quadrilateral mesh generation algorithm using initial design information to satisfy the constraints imposed on the ship structure is also proposed. The proposed data structure and mesh generation algorithm are applied for the various type of vessels for the usability test. Through this test, we have verified the stability and usefulness of this system including mesh generation algorithm.
In the initial ship design stage, performance predictions are generally carried out before and after the hull form design. The former is based on the main dimensions and power information, and the latter is based on the geometry of the hull form and propeller. This paper deals with the practical application of neural networks for the prediction of a ship's performance factors before and after the hull form design. For this, the hull form parameters that affect the performance are studied, and an optimal neural network structure based on the SSMB database is constructed. By comparing the results predicted by neural networks and the model test results, we confirmed that neural networks can be applied to practically evaluate the performance in the initial ship design stage.

Ship capsize accidents are common in coastal waters, particularly involving small fishing boats. To prevent there overturing accidents in small fishing boats, their stabilities must be assessed at the initial design step. However, the available information during the initial design step is limited, posing challenges in performing a reliable stability evaluation. Therefore, this study presents a plan to estimate the transverse metacenter (GM) of small fishing boats using parameters such as KM, KG, and TRIM that can be determined at the initial design step. Stability was evaluated by comparing GM with the minimum transverse metacenter (GMmin) specified in the standard safety evaluation criteria for fishing boats. To calculate the required trim value for hydrostatic characteristics using K-SHIP, a stability assessment program provided by the Korea Maritime Safety and Transportation Corporation, the initial trim state is estimated based on the ship lines using the commercial CFD program STAR-CCM+. GM is then calculated by assessing the hydrostatic characteristics in relation to the boat lines using K-SHIP. Furthermore, the stability of the fully loaded state is compared by subtrcating GM from GMmin. One constructed ship is designated as the standard ship, and the stability assessment method proposed in this study is applied to evaluate stability and validate its effectiveness. Consequently, the representative line of a 4.99-ton fishing boat and nine modular lines models derived from it were evaluated, ultimately identifying a relatively superior stability.

In the initial stages of ship design, designers represent geometry, arrangement, and dimension of hull structures with 2D geometric primitives such as points, lines, arcs, and drawing symbols. However, these design information(‘2D geometric primitives’) defined in the drawing sheet require more intelligent translation processes by the designers in the next design stages. Thus, the loss of design semantics could be occurred and following design processes could be delayed. In the initial design stages, it is not easy to adopt commercial 3D CAD systems, which have been developed f3r being used in detail and production design stages, because the 3D CAD systems require detailed input for geometry definition. In this study, a semantic product model data structure was proposed, and an initial structural CAD system was developed based on the proposed data structure. Contents(‘product model data and design knowledges’) of the proposed data structure are filled with minimal input of the designers, and then 3D solid model and production material information can be automatically generated as occasion demands. Finally, the applicability of the proposed semantic product model data structure and the developed initial structural CAD system was verified through application to deadweight 300,000ton VLCC(Very Large Crude oil Carrier) product modeling procedure.

In this parer, a protocol system is developed, which automates the sequential procedure that transforms the information of compartment generated by SIKOB, the calculation program of ship design, to the STEP format which is used as the input data of next level of ship design. The schemata representing hull form and compartment are constructed. The STEP physical files are made by instancing these schemata using the results of SIKOB. They are transmitted to the CAD system and then worked on the CAD system. It means that they could be used as the data of next level of ship design.
Under the concept of global economy, the enterprises are assigning design and production environments around the world in different areas. A serious problem of information exchange emerges as companies use traditional hardware and very distinct softwares appropriate to their field of expertise. To overcome the decreased productivity due to the interruption of information, the concept of simultaneous engineering and concurrent design becomes very significant. In this article, an agent-based ship design system is developed in order to support a cooperation in distributed ship design environments. Above all, the conflicts that occur in the middle of knowledge sharing in the system must be resolved. An approach to do this is the case-based conflict resolution strategy formulated to resolve current conflict on the basis of previous resolved similar cases in agent-based collaborative design system environments. To do this conflict cases that occur in initial ship design stage are extracted. On the basis of the extracted cases, case-base is constructed. In addition conflict resolution handler located in the facilitator is developed to treat conflict problems effectively by reasoning of the case-base and thus presenting an appropriate solution. The validation of developed case-based conflict resolution strategy is evaluated by applying to collaborative design process in initial ship design stage, especially the machinery outfitting design, the preliminary design, the hullform design, and the structural design. Through the help of the cooperation of the design agents, the facilitator, the conflict resolution handler, and the case-based system, a designer can be supported effectively in his/her decision-making based on the previous cases resolved similarly.

Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) is an integrated business approach to manage the creation and distribution of product information throughout the product development process. From the product perspective, PLM encompasses a holistic approach to product development and product information management. It supports the integrated product information in conjunction with the efficient product structures and BOM (Bill Of Material), user interfaces, proper functions, design processes and enterprise integration. Therefore, PLM should not only satisfy required functions as an enterprise software but also offer a systematic method for the efficient application from the initial stage of its development. Recently, many shipyards have been considering the PLM as a strategic solution to get the efficient management of product information such as 3-D models, BOM, drawings, documents, and the other product data. Though many studies on PLM are performed, most of them are performed in a function-based approach adequate for mass productive assembly industries. It could not help having limitations on applying the proper PLM system to the shipbuilding business since the requirements of shipbuilding PLM are too diverse and huge to design the architecture. This study presents the PLM framework which effectively reflects the diverse requirements of shipbuilding PLM. In order to get the macroscopic architecture of shipbuilding PLM, authors suggest the four-tier architecture model which considers the various requirements collected from shipyards. Entities of ship design data are modeled BOM in terms of product structure and hierarchical class diagram. Applicable functions of shipbuilding PLM are also investigated by analysis of issues of ship design. Finally, by reflecting the design process of shipbuilding, To-Be ship design procedure cooperated with the suggested PLM framework has been summarized.

Currently, all design information of a hull structure is being first defined on 2D drawings not 3D CAD model at the initial ship design stage and then transferred to following design stages through the 2D drawings. This is caused by the past design practice, limitation on time, and lack of hull structural CAD systems supporting the initial design stage. As a result, the following design tasks such as the process planning and scheduling are being manually performed using the 2D drawings. For solving this problem, a data structure supporting the initial design stage is proposed and a prototype system is developed based on the data structure. The applicability of the system is demonstrated by applying it to various examples. The results show that the system can be effectively used for generating the 3D CAD model of the hull structure at the initial design stage.

In this paper, current application of VR in naval architecture and ocean eng. Design is surveyed and VR process is implemented in ship navigation system. So far, very sophisticated VR applications have announced but not published yet. The reason not published may be that the application is for the navy ship of which the information could not be opened to the public. Also there is another area implementing Simulation Based Design, i..e., visualization of the integration process from initial design to the manufacturing. Herein, the tendency of VR in this area is surveyed, so the international application of VR is introduced. Trough the analysis the most appropriate applicability of VR in this area can be distinguished. And to show the application, ship navigation VR is programmed using OpenGL graphics software.
So far, the generation of a hull structural analysis model, that is, a finite element model of a hull structure, has been manually performed by a designer using design experience, and thus has required lots of time because of many constraints, the complexity, and the huge size of the hull structure. To make this task automatic, an algorithm for generating the hull structural analysis model is developed using the seam information of the hull structure. A generating system of the hull structural analysis model is implemented based on the developed algorithm. The applicability of the developed algorithm is demonstrated by applying it to the generation of the global and hold structural analysis models of a deadweight 300,000 ton VLCC (Very Large Crude oil Carrier). The results show that the developed algorithm can quickly generate these models at the initial design stage.
