  • This research, in order to study the effects of initial shear stress of anisotropically consolidated sand that has 0.558% fines, performed several undrained static and dynamic triaxial test. To simulate the real field conditions, loose and dense samples were prepared. Besides, the cyclic shear strength of Nakdong River sand under various combinations of initial static shear stress, stress path, pore water pressure and residual strength relationship was studied. By using Bolton's theory, peak internal friction angle at failure which has considerable effects on the relative density and mean effective stress was determined. In p'- q diagram, the phase transformation line moves closer to the failure line as the specimen's initial anistropical consolidation stress increases. Loose sands were more affected than dense sands. The increase of consolidation stress ratio from 1.4 to 1.8 had an effect on liquefaction resistance strength resulting from the increase of relativity density, and showed similar CSR values in dense specimen condition.

  • Soils around a pile are highly constrained when the vertical load is applied to the pile. However, the conventional direct shear test cannot evaluate the shear strength of the soils under the normal confinement condition. The goal of this study is to evaluate the shear behaviors according to the normal displacement confinement condition including free normal displacement (FND) and constrained normal displacement (CND) during direct shearing. Jumunjin sands were prepared at the different relative densities and loaded at the different normal stresses. The specimens were sheared according to the normal confinement conditions. Experimental results show that shear strengths obtained by the CND tests are higher than those obtained by the FND tests. In addition, for the constrained normal displacement condition, the increment of shear strength increases with the increase of relative density, while the increment of shear strength decreases with the initial normal stress. This study suggests that the effect of confinement condition on the shear strength should be considered when the stability of constrained soils is analyzed.

  • In this study, a series of deposition tests have been conducted on saltwater condition(salinity 32 %o) using an annular flume, in order to estimate depositional properties of kaolinite sediments and to analyze the effect of the initial concentration on them. Total 37 deposition tests have been carried out in three different initial concentrations (1000, 5000, 15000 ppm) with varying the bed shear stress. From these test results, minimum shear stress (or critical shear stress for deposition; ${\tau}_{bmin}$) and the deposition rate parameters (${\sigma}_1,\;({\tau}^*_b-1)_{50},\;{\sigma}_2,\;t_{50}$) for kaolinite sediments have been quantified, and the effects of the initial concentration and salinity on depositional properties of cohesive sediments have been analyzed qualitatively. As the results, ${\tau}_{bmin},\;{\sigma}_1\;and\;({\tau}^*_b-1)_{50}$ are found to be 0.147, 0.74 and $0.65N/m^2$ respectively. Through comparing with results from previous studies, the performance of this study and tests results are shown to be good enough to verify.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate failure characteristics of Carbon/BMI-Nomex honeycomb sandwich on design parameters. A total of 6 types sandwich specimens were manufactured according to core height, face thickness and density, and environmental condition were applied to evaluate temperature and humidity effects of one of these specimens. The test results show that the core shear buckling loads was commonly observed in all specimens except for the joint with density of $64kg/m^3$. After core shear buckling, however, the joint carried additional loads over the buckling loads and then finally failed in the upper face and lower face at the same time. In the case of specimen having high stiffness, the maximum failure load was low due to interfacial failure of the upper face and core without initial core shear buckling. The ETW1 and ETW2 conditions, which were carried out to evaluate the environmental condition of the sandwich specimen, show an initial failure mode which was significantly different from RTD condition. Also, the ETW2 condition with increased temperature under the same humidity shows that the core shear buckling load was 18% less than ETW1 condition.

  • Numerical simulations are performed to investigate the characteristics of flow past a sphere in uniform shear. The Reynolds numbers considered are Re=300, 425 and 480 based on the inlet center velocity and sphere diameter. The non-dimensional shear rate K of the inlet uniform shear is varied from 0 to 0.15. At Re=300, the head of the hairpin vortex loop always locates on the high-velocity side in uniform shear, and the flow maintains the planar symmetry. At Re=425 and 480, the irregularity in the location and strength of the hairpin vortex appearing in uniform inlet flow is much reduced in uniform shear, but the flows still keep the asymmetry for most inlet shear rates. However, in the cases of K=0.075 and 0.1 at Re=425, the flows become planar symmetric and their characteristics of the evolution of the hairpin vortex loops are different from those of asymmetric flows. A hysteresis phenomenon switching from the planar symmetry to the asymmetry (or vice versa) depending on the initial condition is also observed at Re=425.

  • A pressuremeter is an expandable tube which is placed in the soil, and then expanded under controlled condition against the soil. From this test a pressure expansion curve of the soil can be obtained. However soil disturbance during the test has significant influence on the results of tests. A general governing equation for pressuremeter test can be theoretically derived on the basis of the hyperbolic soil model and the cavity expansion theory. The curve fitting technique was used to establish the pressure-strain curve without disturbance of soil during testing. This interpretation makes use of both the loading and unloading portions of the test. An interpretation methodology is described and illustrated with pressuremeter test data carried out in the weathered granitic soil to estimate initial shear modulus. Standard penetration test is a very common site investigation technique in Korea. Therefore the blow counts of standard penetration test are discussed by comparing them with initial shear modulus.

  • Microstructural examinations were performed on the anaerobic biofilm from reactor filled with PE support media. Optical microscope, SEM and fluorescent microscope were used for qualitative and morphological studies on the attached microorganism under anaerobic condition. Microorganisms were attached in crevices where protection from shear forces of surfaces where easy to contact with support media surface. A hypothesis for biofilm accumulation occurs on a surface such as polymer support media is presented schematically : 1st step ; cell-support media attachment, 2nd step ; cell-support media attachment and cell-cell attachment, 3rd step ; attached biofilm from neighboring crevices joins together and growing, 4th step ; mature and irregualar biofilm was formed. In SEM photographs, shape and structures of biofilm were observed, but microorganism species and methanogens were not identified. A large number of methanogenic bacteria were identified on the surface of PE substratum by fluorescence under 480nm of radiation and it was estimated that methanogenic bacteria was related to initial attachment of bacteria under anaerobic condition.

  • Nonlinear cross-anisotropic properties of soil is critical for exact numerical simulation. Theoretically, initial cross-anisotropic properties can be evaluated from triaxial tests with bender element tests, and nonlinear cross-anisotropic properties over initial strain level cannot be evaluated from triaxial tests. In this study, a supposed condition among nonlinear cross-anisotropic properties is suggested to calculate nonlinear cross-anisotropic properties from triaxial tests. Maximum strain and incremental strain energy are applied to combine triaxial test results and theoretical normalized shear modulus curve, respectively Based on combined results, nonlinear cross-anisotropic properties are calculated. Numerical simulation for triaxial tests Is carried out to verify the applicability of the supposed condition with calculated cross-anisotropic properties and simplified nonlinear cross-anisotropic model.

  • This study investigated the effect of relative density on the thickness of shear zone. Digital image processing was used to measure the thickness of shear zone under plane strain conditions. A suitable epoxy resin was injected into the sample and the thickness of the shear zone was investigated. Four independent condition samples were prepared and the thickness of the shear zone was measured. The results indicated that the thickness of shear zone increases as the initial density of sample increases, and during the shear, the void ratios of the shear zone were changed, but the thickness of shear zone was not changed. In addition, the result of measurement of the thickness showed that the thickness of shear zone was almost fixed before critical state, but beyond critical state, the thickness of shear zone sharply increases as relative density increases.

  • This note presents the calculation of nominal area for rock core specimen under direct shear testing condition. The initial nominal area was assumed as ellipsoid, and the equations for calculating the nominal area are derived. The normalized shear displacement and normalized nominal area have an identical relationship regardless of the ellipsoid shape. New testing constants and the generalized method were suggested to calculate the decrease of the nominal area. The method was applied to calculate the direct shear testing data and the changes of result were discussed.
