Initial Dosimetry of a Prototype Ultra-High Dose Rate Electron-Beam Irradiator for FLASH RT Preclinical Studies

  • Purpose: FLASH radiotherapy (RT) using ultra-high dose rate (>40 Gy/s) radiation is being studied worldwide. However, experimental studies such as preclinical studies using small animals are difficult to perform due to the limited availability of irradiation devices and methods for generating a FLASH beam. In this paper, we report the initial dosimetry results of a prototype electron linear accelerator (LINAC)-based irradiation system to perform ultra-high dose rate (UHDR) preclinical experiments. Methods: The present study used the prototype electron LINAC developed by the Research Center of Dongnam Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences (DIRAMS) in Korea. We investigated the beam current dependence of the depth dose to determine the optimal beam current for preclinical experiments. The dose rate in the UHDR region was measured by film dosimetry. Results: Depth dose measurements showed that the optimal beam current for preclinical experiments was approximately 33 mA, corresponding to a mean energy of 4.4 MeV. Additionally, the average dose rates of 80.4 Gy/s and 162.0 Gy/s at a source-to-phantom surface distance of 30 cm were obtained at pulse repetition frequencies of 100 Hz and 200 Hz, respectively. The dose per pulse and instantaneous dose rate were estimated to be approximately 0.80 Gy and 3.8×105 Gy/s, respectively. Conclusions: Film dosimetry verified the appropriate dose rates to perform FLASH RT preclinical studies using the developed electron-beam irradiator. However, further research on the development of innovative beam monitoring systems and stabilization of the accelerator beam is required.

  • The KITSAT-1 was successfully launched on August 11, 1992, into a near circular, 1300-km-high orbit with an $66^{\circ}$inclination. The satellite carries a solid state detector module to measure the high energy particle flux originating mostly from the inner radiation belt. We describe here the objectives of the experiment, the detector structure, and the preliminary result.

광학방식 헤드 트랙커를 위한 맵 생성 알고리즘과 초기자세 추정기법 (Map Creation Algorithm and Initial Attitude Estimation Method for Optical Head Tracker System)

  • 본 논문에서는 광학방식 헤드 트랙커를 위한 맵 생성 알고리즘과 초기자세 추정기법을 제안한다. 제안한 광학방식 헤드 트랙커는 적외선 스테레오 카메라와 특징점으로 사용되는 적외선 다이오드가 부착된 헬멧으로 구성된다. 광학방식 헤드 트랙커의 경우 발광된 특징점의 중심점을 추적하여 조종사 머리의 자세 및 위치를 추정하기 때문에 이를 고려한 특징점의 정확한 위치정보가 요구된다. 제안한 맵 생성 알고리즘은 적외선 다이오드의 방사 형태를 고려하여 정밀한 특징점의 위치 정보가 포함된 맵 데이터와 머리 좌표계를 생성한다. 또한 초기자세 추정 기법은 헬멧에 부착된 특징점의 패턴을 이용하여 카메라와 머리 사이의 초기 자세와 위치를 빠르게 추정하며 이를 바탕으로 동체인 전투기를 기준으로 하는 머리 움직임을 정확하게 추정할 수 있다.

특성이 다른 지게차 적재 중량 센서의 초기 값 오차 보정 (Error Calibration of Initial Value of Weight Measuring Sensors with Different Feature of Forklift)

  • 산업현장에서의 안전사고 빈도가 높은 지게차 전복의 주요 원인인 과적을 방지하기 위해 개발된 앵커(anchor) 볼트 형태의 strain 게이지 센서의 초기 값 오차를 보정하는 방법을 제안하였다. Strain 게이지 센서의 초기 값 오차는 앵커 볼트의 물리적이고 기계적 오차와 환경적 문제에기인하는 것을 확인하였다. 이러한 원인들을 제조 공정에서 제거하는 것은 본 연구의 범위를 벗어나는 것이기 때문에 제반 원인들을 고려한 보정 값을 찾고, 이 보정 값으로 strain 게이지 센서부를 구성하는 ADC 모듈의 초기 값을 보정하는 방법을 적용하였다. 보정 값 도출을 위하여 선형 보간법을 채택하였다. 도출한 보정 값을 4개의 strain 게이지 센서에 적용하여 시험한 결과 4개의 센서 모두 실제 중량 값과의 차이가 5% 이내가 되는 것을 확인하였다. 아울러 초기 값 보정 전에는 센서들의 ADC 값과 적재 중량 실제 값의 상관성이 없었던 점도 동시에 해결할 수 있었다.

  • Characteristics of turbulent lifted flames in coflow jets with the varying initial temperature have recently been investigated about only propane case diluted by nitrogen. The investigation has firstly improved a premixed flame model and a large scale mixing model among competing theories on the stabilization mechanism of turbulent flame to be suitable for a high temperature condition. In this research, about methane with good availability to apply for a practical combustor as clean fuel, its characteristics of turbulent nonpremixed flame have been studied experimentally. The results have shown an effectiveness of the premixed flame model and the large scale mixing model considered initial temperature variation. Additionally, considering the axial distance where the mean fuel concentration falls below the stoichiometric level along the center line of the jet according to diluting nitrogen, the premixed flame model have more accurately been improved.

  • Anisotropy is closely related to the formability of sheet metal and should be considered carefully for more realistic analysis of actual sheet metal forming operations. In order to better describe anisotropic plastic properties of aluminum alloy sheets, a planar anisotropic yield function which accounts for the anisotropy of uniaxial yield stresses and strain rate ratios simultaneously was proposed recently[1]. This yield function was used in the finite element simulations of cup drawing tests for an aluminum alloy 2008-T4. Isotropic hardening with a fixed initial back stress based on experimental tensile and compressive test results was assumed in the simulation. The computation results were in very good agreement with the experimental results. It was shown that the initial back stress as well as the yield surface shape have a large influence on the prediction of the cup height profile.

  • A fast optimal path planning algorithm using the analog Cellular Nonlinear Circuits (CNC) is proposed. The proposed algorithm compute the optimal path using subgoal-based dynamic programming algorithm. In the algorithm, the optimal paths are computed regardless of the distance between the initial and the goal position. It begins to find subgoals starting from the initial position when the output of the initial cell becomes nonzero value. The suboal is set as the initial position to find the next subgoal until the final goal is reached. Simulations have been done considering the imprecise hardware fabrication and the limitation of the magnitude of input value.
