  • A Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma is shown in the present investigation to be effective of phenol degradation in the aqueous solutions in batch reactor with continuous air bubbling. Removal of phenol and effects of various parameters on the removal efficiency in the aqueous solution with high-voltage streamer discharge plasma are studied. The effect of 1st voltage (80 ~ 220 V), air flow rate (3 ~ 7 L/min), pH (3 ~ 11), electric conductivity of solution (4.16 ${\mu}S$/cm, deionized water) ~ 16.57 mS/cm (addition of NaCl 10 g/L) and initial phenol concentration (2.5 ~ 20.0 mg/L) were investigated. The observed results showed that phenol degradation was higher in the basic solution than that of the acidic. The optimum values on the 1st voltage and air flow rate for phenol degradation were 140 V and 6 L/min, respectively. It was considered that absorbance variation of $UV_{254}$ of phenol solution can be use as an indirect indicator of change of the non-biodegradable organic compounds within the treated phenol solution. Electric conductivity was not influenced the phenol degradation. To obtain the removal efficiency of phenol and COD of phenol over 97 % (initial phenol concentration, 10.0 mg/L), 80 min and 120 min were need, respectively. Phenol and COD degradation showed a pseudo-first order kinetics.

  • Blood plasma proteins dissolved in isotonic phosphate-buffered saline were found to be adsorbed to red blood cell ghosts suspended in the solution. This was evidenced by concentration reduction of the plasma proteins in the bulk solution. For initial concentration of 0.1mg/mL immuno globulin, concentration reduction increased from 14% to 45% as the volume fraction of red blood cell ghosts in the solution increased from 5% to 45%. For initial concentration of 0.075mg/mL albumin, the concentration reduction increased from 12% to 47% as the volume fraction of red blood cell ghosts in the solution increased from 5% to 70%. The concentration reduction of plasma proteins in hardened red blood cell ghosts was higher than that in red blood cell ghosts. The number of adsorbed protein molecules per a red blood cell ghost were reduced as volume fraction of the ghosts in the solution increased.

  • This paper deals with an extended analytical solution for the mixture solidification problem, in which temperature is inherently coupled with the solute transport due to the presence of volume contraction induced flow. A new exact solution to the energy equation accounting for the convection effect in the melt is successfully derived, which allows the present analysis to cover a high initial superheating. Difference in properties between the solid and liquid phases is rigorously incorporated into the model equations in the solid fraction weighted form. Taking advantage of linearized correction factors, a systematic and easy-to-implement algorithm for determining the solidus and liquidus positions is introduced, which proves not only to converge stably but also to be very efficient. For a specific case, the present results show excellent agreements with the existing solution. The effect of convection in the melt becomes appreciable with increasing the initial superheating. It is revealed that variable properties in the mushy region significantly affect the solidification behaviors. The present study is also capable of resolving the interaction between microsegregation and macrosegregation.

  • This study was conducted to know the removal characteristics of ammonia nitrogen by commercially available cation exchange resins. Eight acidic cation exchange resins were investigated in batch reactors. Among them, the most effective resin for ammonia removal in solution was PK228, which was a strong acidic resin of $Na^{+}$ type. PK228 was compared with activated carbon and natural zeolite. The effects of cation exchange capacity, ammonia concentration, resin amount, temperature and pH on ammonia removal by PK228 were investigated in batch reactor, and the effect of effluent velocity in continuous column reactor. Strong acidic resins of porous type were more effective than week acidic resins or gel type resins for ammonia removal in solution. PK228 was more effective than activated carbon and natural zeolite for ammonia removal in batch reactor. With increasing initial ammonia concentration, the amount of ammonia removed by PK228 increased, but the proportion of removed ammonia to initial ammonia concentration decreased. The effect or temperature on ammonia removal by PK228 was very slight. The ammonia removal to acidic solution was more effective than that at basic solution. With decreasing effluent velocity of solution through column, breakthrough point extended, and ammonia removal capacity increased.d.

  • This paper presents analytical approximate solutions for the initial post-buckling deformation of the pipes in oil and gas wells. The governing differential equation with sinusoidal nonlinearity can be reduced to form a third-order-polynomial nonlinear equation, by coupling of the well-known Maclaurin series expansion and orthogonal Chebyshev polynomials. Analytical approximations to the resulting boundary condition problem are established by combining the Newton's method with the method of harmonic balance. The linearization is performed prior to proceeding with harmonic balancing thus resulting in a set of linear algebraic equations instead of one of non-linear algebraic equations, unlike the classical method of harmonic balance. We are hence able to establish analytical approximate solutions. The approximate formulae for load along axis, and periodic solution are established for derivative of the helix angle at the end of the pipe. Illustrative examples are selected and compared to "reference" solution obtained by the shooting method to substantiate the accuracy and correctness of the approximate analytical approach.

  • The algorithm for obtaining the isotonic regression in simple tree order, the most basic and simplest model next to the simple order, is considered. We propose to call it "Pool-the-Maximum-Violators" algorithm (PMVA) in conjunction with the "Pool-Adjacent-Violators" algorithm (PAVA) in the simple order. The dual problem of obtaining the isotonic regression in simple tree order is our main concern. An intuitively appealing relation between the primal and the dual problems is demonstrated. The interesting difference is that in simple order the required number of pooling is at least the number of initial violating pairs and any path leads to the solution, whereas in the simple tree order it is at most the number of initial violators and there is only one advisable path although there may be some others leading to the same solution.o the same solution.

  • The degradation characteristics of TCE by Ferrate(VI) oxidation have been studied. The degradation efficiency of TCE in aqueous solution was investigated at various pH values, Ferrate(VI) doses, initial concentrations of TCE and aqueous solution temperature values. GC-ECD was used to analyze TCE. The optimum conditions of TCE degradation were obtained pH 7.0 and $25^{\circ}C$ in aqueous solution. Also, the experimental results showed that TCE removal efficiency increased with the decrease of initial concentration of TCE. And intermediate products were identified by GC-MS techniques. Ethyl Chloride, Chloroform, Ethylene, 1,2-dichloroethane and 1,1,2-trichloroethane were identified as a reaction intermediate, and $Cl^-$ was identified as an end product.

  • Radiation-induced oscillatory instability in CH$_4$/Air diffusion flames is numerically investigated by adopting detailed chemistry. Counterflow diffusion flame is employed as a model flamelet and optically thin gas-phase radiation is assumed. Attention is focused on the extinction regime induced by radiative heat loss, which occurs at low strain rate. Once a steady flame structure is obtained for a prescribed value of initial strain rate, transient solution of the flame is calculated after a finite amount of strain-rate perturbation is imposed on the steady flame. Depending on the initial strain rate and the amount of perturbed strain rate, transient evolution of the flame exhibits various types of flame-evolution behaviors. Basically, the dynamic behaviors can be classified into two types, namely oscillatory decaying solution and diverging solution leading to extinction.

  • The problem of phase change from liquid to solid in the inviscid plane-stagnation flow is theoretically investigated. The solution at the initial stage of freezing is obtained by expanding it in powers of time, and the final equilibrium state is determined from the steady-state governing equations. The transient solution is dependent on the three dimensionless parameters, but the equilibrium state is determined by one parameter of (temperature ratio/conductivity ratio). The effect of the fluid flow on the growth rate of the solid in the pure conduction problem can be clearly seen from the solution of the initial stage and the final equilibrium state. The characteristics of the transient heat transfer at the surface of the solid and the liquid side of the solid-liquid interface for all the dimensionless parameters are elucidated.
