Using COD-R curves, instability of crack growth in ductile material is studied here. Tearing modulus $T_{\delta}$, based on the COA concept is defined and the instability criterion $T_{{\delta}{\app}}$> $T_{{\delta}{\mat}}$ is compared with experiments. Variations of the COD-R curve and the location of rotation center are experimentally investigated as the initial crack ratio varies. Three-point bend specimens of alloy steel SCM4 are used here and two clip-on gauges are installed in order to obtain the COD-R curve. The results show that the tearing modulus $T_{\delta}$ is a good measure to characterize the instability of crack growth. Also it is found that the location of rotation center is almost constant regardless of the initial crack ratio and the amount of the crack growth.

After researching the physical properties of the concrete included Rice Husk Ash(RHA concrete) and workability of fresh concrete admixed RHA, we have tested durability of RHA-concrete against freeaing and thawing in the winter using rapid freezing and thawing test method(KS F 2456) . There aretwo hypotheses to explain the failure mechanism of a freezing and thawing action. First, the hydraulic pressure in the pores of freezing concrete make an internal stress of concrete structures outbreaking micro crack in the face of concrete, Second, Frost action causing damage to cement paste repeatedly come from soil frost action, freezing water in the capillaries. Initial Relative Dynamic Modulus of Elasticity (DME) was biggest in cae of unit binder weight 600kgf/㎥ and relative dynamic modulus of elasticity increased until 300cycles. In general , initial relative DME was proportional to unit binder weight . Relative DME was decreased in proportion to unit binder weight in the case of 300, 400, 500kgf/㎥ , but relative DME fo the others remained more than 90% until 300 cycles. It was not good effect of intermixed RHA to concrete in case of below unit binder weight 300kgf/㎥ and the resistance of freezing and thawing was not good either.

In this study, the load distribution and deformation of rock-socketed drilled shafts subjected to axial load are investigated based on small scale model tests. In order to analyze the effects of major influencing factors of end bearing capacity, Hoek-cell triaxial tests were performed. From the test results, it was found that the initial slope of end bearing load transfer (q-w) curve was highly dependent on rock mass modulus and pile diameter, while the ultimate unit toe resistance ($q_{max}$) was influenced by rock mass modulus and the spacing of discontinuities. End bearing load transfer function of drilled shafts socketed in rock was proposed based on the Hoek-cell triaxial test results and the field loading tests which were performed on granite and gneiss in South Korea. Through the comparison with pile load tests, it is found that the load-transfer curve by the present study is in good agreement with the general trend observed by field loading tests, and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of load transfer of drilled shaft.
In this study, CS-H walls with large stiffness were constructed using geosythetics for use in excavation at a depth of 30 m or more in Korea, and in order to construct the CS-H wall suitable for the site conditions, the formulation was examined according to the change in the mixing ratio of the geosythetics and the slump value (slump flow) and as a result, in the target slump 180 mm and the slump flow 500 mm, the formulation was confirmed to meet the mechanical properties such as the initial bending strength, the long-term behavior, and the elastic modulus as well as the economic efficiency. However, in the slump flow 600 mm, the result indicated that the formulation was inappropriate in the mechanical properties such as the initial bending strength, the long-term behavior, and the elastic modulus.
This study evaluates the ratio of Toluene di-isocyanate (TDI) functional group isocyanate (NCO) to the binder functional hydroxyl group (OH) in HTPB/AP/Al-based propellants on their mechanical properties, flow rate, and viscosity to determine the limitations of NCO/OH in the composition of solid propellants. The propellants consisted of hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) polyurethane (PU), aluminum (Al) and tri-modal ammonium perchlorate (AP). The tri-modal AP consisted of 30% of coarse AP, 30% of medium AP, and 8% of fine AP. The ratio of NCO/OH varies from 0.73 to 0.85, with two binder percentages of 10.5% and 12%. An increase in NCO/OH ratio with 10.5% binder provided 20%, 95%, and 8 to 9% increments in UTS, modulus, and hardness, respectively. However, the propellant elongation, density, and flow rate decreased by 170%, 0.2%, and 11-12%, respectively. Viscosity increased 20% based on initial hour reading. The 12% binder provides 27%, 47%, and 5~6% an increment of UTS, modulus and hardness respectively. However, the propellant elongation, density, and flow rate decreased by 47%, 0.17% and 27%, respectively. The viscosity increased 30% based on initial hour reading. This study suggests the NCO/OH value of 0.77 and 10.5~11% binder content in propellant based on the mechanical properties, flow rate, and viscosity for better processing and pot life.
In this study, limestone powder (LS) and fly ash (FA) were used as powder materials in self-compacting concrete (SCC) in increasing quantities in addition to cement, so that the two powders commonly used in the production of SCC could be compared in the same study. Considering the reduction of the maximum aggregate size in SCC, 10 mm or 16 mm was selected as the coarse aggregate size. The properties of fresh concrete were determined by slump flow (including T500 time), V-funnel and J-ring experiments. The experimental results showed that as the amount of both LS and FA increased, the slump flow also increased. The increase in powder material had a negative effect on V-funnel flow times, causing it to increase; however, the increase in FA concretes was smaller compared to LS ones. The increase in the powder content reduced the amount of blockage in the J-ring test for both aggregate sizes. As the hardened concrete properties, the compressive and splitting strengths as well as the modulus of elasticity were determined. Longitudinal and transverse deformations were measured by attaching a special frame to the cylindrical specimens and the values of Poisson's ratio, initiation and critical stresses were obtained. Despite having a similar W/C ratio, all SCC exhibited higher compressive strength than NVC. Compressive strength increased with increasing powder content for both LS and FA; however, the increase of the FA was higher than the LS due to the pozzolanic effect. SCC with a coarse aggregate size of 16 mm showed higher strength than 10 mm for both powders. Similarly, the modulus of elasticity increased with the amount of powder material. Inelastic properties, which are rarely found in the literature for SCC, were determined by measuring the initial and critical stresses. Crack formation in SCC begins under lower stresses (corresponding to lower initial stresses) than in normal concretes, while critical stresses indicate a more brittle behavior by taking higher values.

Dry sand specimens for both normally consolidated and overconsolidated triaxial compression tests were prestressed on the path with five different coefficients of earth pressure 1.0, 3/4, 0.55, $K_0$ and 1/3. Deformation resistance of normally consolidated sand increased with increasing the initial stress for all coefficients of earth pressure during consolidation, and the deformation modulus at a certain initial stress showed a tendency to increase with increasing the coefficient of earth pressure. And deformation moduli($E_i$, $E_{50}$), were found to be proportional to the $n_{th}$ power of initial stresses[${\sigma}_{m0}{^{\prime}}$, ${\sigma}_{10}{^{\prime}}$, ${\sigma}_{30}{^{\prime}}$, $({\sigma}_1-{\sigma}_3)_0$] for both isotropically and anisotropically normally consolidated samples, where n varied from 0.37 to 0.92. Overconsolidated sand with the higher overconsolidation ratio showed the higher deformation modulus. It is concluded that the $K_0$-anisotropically consolidated triaxial compression test is necessary to obtain the more accurate value of in-situ deformation modulus.
Duncan & Chang(1970) proposed the Duncan-Chang model that a linear relation of transformed stress-strain plots was reconstituted from a nonlinear relation of stress-strain curve of triaxial compression test using hyperbolic theory so as to estimate an initial tangent modulus and ultimate deviator stress for the soil specimen. Although the transformed stress-strain plots show a linear relationship theoretically, they actually show a nonlinearity at both low and high values of strain of the test. This phenomenon indicates that the stress-strain curve is not a complete form of a hyperbola. So, if linear regression analyses for the transformed stress-strain plot are performed over a full range of strain of a test, error in the estimation of their linear equations is unavoidable depending on ranges of strain with non-linearity. In order to reduce such an error, a modified regression analysis method is proposed in this study, in which linear regression analyses for transformed stress-strain plots are performed over the entire range of strain except the range the non-linearity is shown around starting and ending of the test, and then the initial tangent modulus and ultimate deviator stresses are calculated. Isotropically consolidated-drained triaxial compression tests were performed on compacted weathered soil with a modified Proctor density to obtain their model parameters. The modified regression analyses for transformed stress-strain plots were performed and analyzed results are compared with results estimated by 2 points method (Duncan et al., 1980). As a result of analyses, initial tangent moduli are about 4.0% higher and ultimate deviator stresses are about 2.9% lower than those values estimated by Duncan's 2 points method.

The DF-MZEP-CME (decision feedback - maximum zero-error probability for constant modulus errors) algorithm that makes the probability for constant modulus error (CME) close to zero and employs decision feedback (DF) structures shows more improved performance in channel distortion compensation. However the DF-MZEP-CME algorithm has a computational complexity proportional to a sample size for probability estimation and this property plays a role of an obstacle in practical implementation. In this paper, the gradient of DF-MZEP-CME is proposed to be estimated recursively and shown to solve the computational problem by making the algorithm independent of the sample size. For a sample size N, the conventional method has 10N multiplications but the proposed has only 20 regardless of N. Also the recursive gradient estimation for weight update is kept in continuity from the initial state to the steady state without any error propagation.

In this study, effects of the density of soil and the confining pressure applied to the soil sample on the elastic moduli of subgrade soils are experimentally analyzed. Through investigation of subgrade materials of domestic expressways, five typical types of subgrade soils are selected for the experiments. A series of unconsolidated undrained triaxial tests is performed on samples prepared with various water contents and densities at the confining pressures of 1.02, 2.04, and $3.06kg/cm^2$. Initial tangent modulus is inferred from the unloading-reloading portion of the stress strain curve obtained during an individual loading-unloading-reloading test. As a result of the analysis, it is found that the effect of the confining pressure on the elastic modulus of subgrade material is well consistent with the equation proposed by Janbu, and that the elastic modulus can be related to the dry unit weight expressing the Janbu constants as exponentiial functions of it. It is also found that the water content has little effect on the elastic modulus for the samples with the degree of saturation less than 70%.
