  • Levosulpiride is the levo-enantiomer from of racemic sulpride. abenzamide derivative selectively inhibition doparninergic D2 receptos at the trigger zone both in the central nervous system and in the gastrointestinal tract. We report a rapid and sensitive HPLC method using reverse phase C 18 column with fluorescence detection for separation and quantitation of levosulpiride in plasma. Tiapride was used as an internal standard. After adding an internal standard. levosulpiride in 800 ${\mu}l$ of plasma was extracted under basic conditions with ethyl acetate and methylene chloride. • Interaction of a representative antibiotic, doxycycline(Doxy), with commercial poly(acrylonitrile) (PAN) and cationic-dyeable poly(ethylene terephthalate)(PET) fiber was studied in development of infection resistant biomedical materials. Regular PET was also employed for a comparison purpose. Their interactions were investigated at different treatment temperatures, times, and pHs. Fibers were also hydrolyzed by 1% NaOH for 1 or 2 hours at $85^{\circ}C\;and\;100{\circ}C$ to study effect of hydrolysis on antibiotic sorption. Infection-resistant characteristics of the substrates were evaluated by zone of inhibition (ZOI) test. Results revealed that a significant chemical change occurred in PAN and cationic-dyeable PET due to hydrolysis. Additional functional groups obtained by hydrolysis not only enhanced sorption of the antibiotics but also provided greater ZOI values, indicating substantial improvement in sustained infection resistance properties.

  • This study aims to evaluate the effect of Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus with high-level mupirocin resistance (Hi-Mup MRSA). To examine the antimicrobial effect of photogem-mediated PDT against Hi-Mup MRSA, CFU quantifications, bacteria cell viability tests, and disk diffusion antimicrobial susceptibility tests were evaluated. In addition, one of PDT mechanisms was investigated by accumulating photogem ($10\;{\mu}g/ml$) in Hi-Mup MRSA. Photogem-mediated PDT properly inhibited the colony formation of Hi-Mup MRSA. Viable bacteria decreased greatly after a PDT application with photogem $10\;{\mu}g/ml$ at energy density $15\;J/cm^2$. The diameter of the inhibition zone around susceptible disks increased after PDT. In addition, we confirmed the accumulation of photogem in bacteria through fluorescent images. These results demonstrated that excellent photosensitization of Hi-Mup MRSA can be achieved using photogem with 630 nm LED irradiation. Thus, PDT may make survival Hi-Mup MRSA inactive.

  • Coccal form of microorganism (staphylococcus) isolated from infected root canal was inoculated on the thioglycolate agar and paper discs (5mm in diameter) immersed with 0.1ml of 10% Formaldehyde, Thymol, Eugenol Phenol (90%) and 5% Silver nitrate were placed on the media. The thioglycolate plate was incubated at $37^{\circ}C$ for 48 hours. Inhibition zone was measured as follow: The greatest value was 3.9mm at Formaldehyde, next followed Thymol 3.6mm, Eugenol 3.5mm and Phenol 3.4mm. The least value, 3.0mm was found at Silver nitrate.

  • The ethanol extract of Quercus mongolica leaf was fractionated by various organic solvents, and their antimicrobial and antioxidative activities were investigated against several microorganisms. The ethanol extract of Quercus mongolica leaf at two thousand $\mu\textrm{g}$ per disc showed 17~21mm inhibition zone against Gram postive and Gram negative bacteria. Among the various solvent fractions from ethanol extract of Quercus mongolica leaf, the hexane fraction showed the strongest antimicrobial activity. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of hexane fraction was 250$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL against Bacillus cereus, 250~500$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL against Listeria monocytogenes, 500$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL against Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia coli O157, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Also, the hexane and chloroform fraction had the similar antioxidative activity compared to that of butylated hydroxy toluene(BHT).

  • The aim of this research was to investigate the industrial application of Zanthoxylum schinifolium. Antibacterial activities of the n-hexane, methylene chloride (MC), ethyl acetate, and butanol fractions of Z. schinifolium were tested against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Helicobacter pylori. Among the fractions, the n-hexane and MC fractions showed the stronger antibacterial activity against H. pylori, with an inhibition zone greater than 10 mm in disc assays. Further testing of bergapten and lupeol from the MC fraction of Z. schinifolium revealed the antibacterial effects against E. coli, S. aureus and H. pylori, suggesting their potential use as antibacterial agents.

  • This study was carried out to investigate mutagenecity and antimutagenic effects from crude extract, heating extract and alcohol extract of Korean mistletoe(Viscum album L.) on the bacterial short-term tests, such as Ames test, spore rec-assay, SOS spot test and SOS chromotest by using several kinds of mutagens. In the Ames test, each extract did not show any mutagenesis, but each extract showed inhibitory effects of 80∼95% and 70∼94% against mutagenesis induced by 3-amino-1, 4-dimethyl-5H-pyrido[4,3-b] indole(Trp-P-1) and 2-aminofluorene(2-AF) in Salmonella typhimurium TA98, respectively. In th spore rec-assay, mistletoe ectracts showed antimutagenic effect with inhibiton zone in the range of 5∼11mm against mutagenicity induced by mitomycin C(MMC, 18mm) and N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidne (MNNG, 24mm), respectively. The heating and alcohol extracts in the SOS chromotest showed 96% and 70% inhibition against benzo-α-pyrene[B(α)P] and Trp-P-1 induced mutagenesis, respectively.

  • Recently, interest in hygiene has been arouse in the health care field. Consequently, Filters with antibacterial agent applied to improve air quality by sterilizing bacteria, fungi, etc. We actually installed antibacterial air filter containing 2.5wt%Ag zeolite on the air intake route to air-conditioner in passenger cu, and evaluated filter's performance on antibacterial effect. By the microbe liquid spattering method, we found that the antibacterial air filter has notably sufficient antibacterial efficiency against standard strains and wild type strains. Antibacterial effect was observed at whole area of filter media by zone of inhibition test. The evaluation of microbe quantity was conducted through mixing dilution plate culture method. In comparison with ordinary filter, the amount of germs attached on antibacterial air filters was larger. The amount of germs attached on ordinary filters was very small since ordinary filters contained less dust. In comparison in antibacterial air filter with thickness, the amount of germs attached on 9mm filter was smaller than that of on 6mm filter. i.e. thicker filter, superior efficiency.
