Korea Aerospace Research Institute produces mosaic images of the Korean Peninsula every year to promote the use of satellite images and provides them to users in the public sector. However, since the pan-sharpening and color balancing methodologies are applied during the mosaic image processing, the original spectral information is distorted. In addition, there is a limit to analyze using mosaic images as mosaic images provide only Red, Green and Blue bands excluding Near Infrared (NIR) band. Therefore, in order to compensate for these limitations, this study applied the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) technique and indices extracted from R, G, B bands together for image classification and compared the classification results. As a result of the analysis, the accuracy of the mosaic image classification result was about 67.51%, while the accuracy of the image classification result using both PCA and RGB indices was about 75.86%, confirming that the accuracy of the image classification result can be improved. As a result of comparing the PCA and the RGB indices, the accuracy of the image classification result was about 64.10% and 74.05% respectively. Through this, it was confirmed that the classification accuracy using the RGB indices was higher among the two techniques, and implications were derived that it was important to use high quality reference or supplementary data. In the future, additional indices and techniques are needed to improve the classification and analysis results of mosaic images, and related research is expected to increase the utilization of images that provide only R, G, B or limited spectral information.
Medium and high-resolution optical satellites have proven their effectiveness in detecting wildfire areas. However, smoke plumes generated by wildfire scatter visible light incidents on the surface, thereby interrupting accurate monitoring of the area where wildfire occurs. Therefore, a technology to extract smoke in advance is required. Deep learning technology is expected to improve the accuracy of smoke extraction, but the lack of training datasets limits the application. However, for clouds, which have a similar property of scattering visible light, a large amount of training datasets has been accumulated. The purpose of this study is to develop a smoke extraction technique using deep learning, and the limits due to the lack of datasets were overcome by using a cloud dataset on transfer learning. To check the effectiveness of transfer learning, a small-scale smoke extraction training set was made, and the smoke extraction performance was compared before and after applying transfer learning using a public cloud dataset. As a result, not only the performance in the visible light wavelength band was enhanced but also in the near infrared (NIR) and short-wave infrared (SWIR). Through the results of this study, it is expected that the lack of datasets, which is a critical limit for using deep learning on smoke extraction, can be solved, and therefore, through the advancement of smoke extraction technology, it will be possible to present an advantage in monitoring wildfires.
We analyzed the potential for joint utilization of Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) satellite imagery Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) in crop assessment, considering the aging of MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellites. Over 11 years from 2012 to 2022, we examined the characteristics of NDVI changes in corn and soybean cultivation areas in Illinois, USA. VIIRS and MODIS satellite imagery NDVI exhibited a high correlation coefficient of over 0.98. However, during periods of rapid crop growth or decline, VIIRS NDVI showed values approximately 0.12 to 0.14 higher than MODIS. Estimating crop anomaly classes based on NDVI, we observed similar trends in corn and soybean crop anomaly classes in 2018 and 2019. However, in 2022, there appeared to be a significant divergence in crop anomaly classes, suggesting the need for further investigation. The correlation coefficients between MODIS and VIIRS satellite imagery NDVI and corn and soybean yields were consistently high, exceeding 0.8, indicating the potential for quantity estimation using both MODIS and VIIRS satellite imagery. Specifically, for VIIRS NDVI, excluding the increasing trend in crop quantity estimation for soybeans enhanced the correlation, and compared to MODIS, it showed a consistently high correlation with quantity from approximately 16 days earlier, indicating the potential for early estimation.

Vegetation indices based on selected wavelength reflectance measurements are used to represent crop growth and physiological conditions. However, the anisotropic properties of the crop canopy surface can govern spectral reflectance and vegetation indices. In this study, we applied an ensemble of bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) models to high-resolution Sentinel-2 satellite imagery and compared the differences between correction results before and after reflectance. In the red and near-infrared (NIR) band reflectance images, BRDF-corrected outlier values appeared in certain urban and paddy fields of farmland areas and forest shadow areas. These effects were equally observed when calculating the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and 2-band enhanced vegetation index (EVI2). Furthermore, the outlier values in corrected NIR band were shown in pixels shadowed by mountain terrain. These results are expected to contribute to the development and improvement of BRDF models in high-resolution satellite images.
This paper describes a remote system to monitor the circadian behavioral patterns of elders who live alone. The proposed system was designed and implemented to provide more conveniently and reliably the required functionalities of a remote monitoring system for elders based on the development of first phase prototype[2]. The developed system is composed of an in-house sensing system and a server system. The in-house sensing system is a set of wireless sensor nodes which have pyroelectric infrared (PIR) sensor to detect a motion of elder. Each sensing node sends its detection signal to a home gateway via wireless link. The home gateway stores the received signals into a remote database. The server system is composed of a database server and a web server, which provides web-based monitoring system to caregivers (friends, family and social workers) for more cost effective intelligent care service. The improved second phase system can provide 'automatic diagnosis', 'going out detection', and enhanced user interface functionalities. We have evaluated the first and second phase monitoring systems from real field experiments of 3/4 months continuous operation with installation of 9/15 elders' houses, respectively. The experimental results show the promising possibilities to estimate the behavioral patterns and the current status of elder even though the simplicity of sensing capability.
An algorithm for detection of yellow sand aerosols has been developed with infrared bands from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Multi-functional Transport Satellite-1 Replacement (MTSAT-1R) data. The algorithm is the hybrid algorithm that has used two methods combined together. The first method used the differential absorption in brightness temperature difference between $11{\mu}m$ and $12{\mu}m$ (BTD1). The radiation at 11 ${\mu}m$ is absorbed more than at 12 ${\mu}m$ when yellow sand is loaded in the atmosphere, whereas it will be the other way around when cloud is present. The second method uses the brightness temperature difference between $3.7{\mu}m$ and $11{\mu}m$ (BTD2). The technique would be most sensitive to dust loading during the day when the BTD2 is enhanced by reflection of $3.7{\mu}m$ solar radiation. We have applied the three methods to MTSAT-1R for derivation of the yellow sand dust and in conjunction with the Principle Component Analysis (PCA), a form of eigenvector statistical analysis. As produced Principle Component Image (PCI) through the PCA is the correlation between BTD1 and BTD2, errors of about 10% that have a low correlation are eliminated for aerosol detection. For the region of aerosol detection, aerosol index (AI) is produced to the scale of BTD1 and BTD2 values over land and ocean respectively. AI shows better results for yellow sand detection in comparison with the results from individual method. The comparison between AI and OMI aerosol index (AI) shows remarkable good correlations during daytime and relatively good correlations over the land.

Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA) has issued the tropical storm(typhoon) warning or advisories when it was developed to tropical storm from tropical depression and a typhoon is expected to influence the Korean peninsula and adjacent seas. Typhoon information includes current typhoon position and intensity. KMA has used the Dvorak Technique to analyze the center of typhoon and it's intensity by using available geostationary satellites' images such as GMS, GOES-9 and MTSAT-1R since 2001. The Dvorak technique is so subjective that the analysis results could be variable according to analysts. To reduce the subjective errors, QuikSCAT seawind data have been used with various analysis data including sea surface temperature from geostationary meteorological satellites, polar orbit satellites, and other observation data. On the other hand, there is an advantage of using the Subjective Dvorak Technique(SDT). SDT can get information about intensity and center of typhoon by using only infrared images of geostationary meteorology satellites. However, there has been a limitation to use the SDT on operational purpose because of lack of observation and information from polar orbit satellites such as SSM/I. Therefore, KMA has established Advanced Objective Dvorak Technique(AODT) system developed by UW/CIMSS(University of Wisconsin-Madison/Cooperative Institude for Meteorological Satellite Studies) to improve current typhoon analysis technique, and the performance has been tested since 2005. We have developed statistical relationships to correct AODT CI numbers according to the SDT CI numbers that have been presumed as truths of typhoons occurred in northwestern pacific ocean by using linear, nonlinear regressions, and neural network principal component analysis. In conclusion, the neural network nonlinear principal component analysis has fitted best to the SDT, and shown Root Mean Square Error(RMSE) 0.42 and coefficient of determination($R^2$) 0.91 by using MTSAT-1R satellite images of 2005. KMA has operated typhoon intensity analysis using SDT and AODT since 2006 and keep trying to correct CI numbers.
Brightness temperature (BT) difference between sea fog and sea surface is small, because the top height of fog is low. Therefore, it is very difficult to detect sea fog with infrared (IR) channels in the nighttime. To overcome this difficulty, we have developed a new algorithm for detection of sea fog that consists in three tests. Firstly, both stratus and sea fog were discriminated from the other clouds by using the difference between BTs $3.7{\mu}m$ and $11{\mu}m$. Secondly, stratus occurring at a level higher than sea fog was removed when the difference between cloud top temperature and sea surface temperature (SST) is smaller than 3 K. In this process, we used daily SST data from AMSR-E microwave measurements that is available even in the presence of cloud. Then, the SST was converted to $11{\mu}m$ BT based on the regressed relationship between AMSR-E SST and MTSAT-1R $11{\mu}m$ BT at 1733 UTC over clear sky regions. Finally, stratus was further removed by using the homogeneity test based on the difference in cloud top texture between sea fog and stratus. Comparison between the retrievals from our algorithm and that from Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) algorithm, shows that the KMA algorithm often misconceived sea fog as stratus, resulting in underestimating the occurrence of sea fog. Monthly distribution of sea fog over northeast Asia in 2008 was derived from the proposed algorithm. The frequency of sea fog is lowest in winter, and highest in summer especially in June. The seasonality of the sea fog occurrence between East and West Sea was comparable, while it is not clearly identified over South Sea. These results would serve to prevent the possible occurrence of marine accidents associated with sea fog.

To improve sensing capability of infrared, heat-resistance and mechanical properties, the $SiO_2$ and $TiO_2$ anti-reflective layers were coated on sapphire substrate by MOCVD. The standard wavelength was 4,600nm, and the thickness of anti-reflective layers were 379 and 758nm in case of ${\lambda}/4$ and ${\lambda}/2$ of incident angle($65^{\circ}$), respectively. The $SiO_2$ and $TiO_2$ anti-reflective layers were coated 12.6 and 9.7nm/min of deposition rates by increasing oxygen pressure to set the ideal refractive index of 1.283. In case of $SiO_2({\lambda}/2)$ coating, the transmittance increased from 55.0 to 62.7%. The transmittance of $TiO_2({\lambda}/2)$ anti-reflective layer also increased from 55.0 to 64.8%. The flexural strength of $SiO_2({\lambda}/2)$ and $TiO_2({\lambda}/2)$ layer coated sapphire increased from 337.8 to 362.9 and 371.8MPa, respectively. The flexural strength at $500^{\circ}C$ of these materials also increased respectively to 304.5, 358.2MPa from 265.9MPa. From these results, we confirmed these materials can be used as transmission window of infrared light.
A detector for monitoring carbon monoxide (CO) in ambient air by nondispersive infrared (NDIR) spectroscopy has been developed and investigated its sensitivity and stability. The essential parts of the absorption cell are three spherical concave mirrors so as to improve the sensitivity by increasing the light path length in the cell. The radius and center of curvature of mirrors and position in the cell was calculated by computer simulation in order that the light path length may be 16m into the 50cm cell. The number of traversals and optical path properties were confirmed by laser beam alignment in transparent absorption cell. The photoconductive type lead selenide (PbSe) was used as CO sensing material, which was cooled to increase the responsibility by thermoelectric cooling method. The detection limit and span drift of the developed CO detector was 0.24ppm and 0.03ppm(v/v) respectively.
