We have developed Hybrid algorithm for yellow sand detection. Hybrid algorithm is composed of three methods using infrared bands. The first method used the differential absorption in brightness temperature difference between $11\mu m\;and\;12\mu m$ (BID _1), through which help distinguish the yellow sand from various meteorological clouds. The second method uses the brightness temperature difference between $3.7\mu m\;and\;11\mu m$ (BID_2). The technique would be most sensitive to dust loading during the day when the BID _2 is enhanced by reflection of $3.7\mu m$ solar radiation. The third one is a newly developed algorithm from our research, the so-called surface temperature variation method (STY). We have applied the three methods to MODIS for derivation of the yellow sand dust and in conjunction with the Principle Component Analysis (PCA), a form of eigenvector statistical analysis. PCI shows better results for yellow sand detection in comparison with the results from individual method. The comparison between PCI and MODIS aerosols optical depth (AOD) shows remarkable good correlations during daytime and relatively good correlations over the land.

Special problem emphasized by specialists in the field of analyzing the heat interchanges in the system ocean-atmosphere (SOA) is a necessity of determination of the near-surface atmospheric temperature, which can be only indirectly connected with characteristics of the SOA natural microwave radiation measured from satellites. That is why, the following dilemma is not obvious, but interesting and promised: what is better - to use the satellite methods for retrieving the partial parameters of the SOA or for analysis its state as a whole. To our opinion, this task is similar to the idea recognized by specialists engaged in the heat infrared region (8-12 mcm) of electromagnetic spectrum and its applications, where an intensity of natural infrared radiation (effective radiation) is used as the inherent property (the attribute) of the SOA heat balance. Here we studied important aspects of this problem: a) what medium initiates a heat transfer in the SOA and disturbs its heat balance - the ocean or the atmosphere b) what SOA parameters directly influence on its natural microwave radiation intensity (brightness temperature) measured from satellites? We relate these processes mainly to the synoptic range of time scales enriched by various events in the SOA interface such as the mid-latitude and tropical cyclones.
For the purpose of investigating the contributions of various gases to climate change, the thermal radiation associated with greenhouse gases are extracted from AIRS (Atmospheric Infrared Sounder) infrared radiances over the tropical pacific region. AIRS instrument which was launched on the EOS-Aqua satellite in May 2002 covers the spectral range from 650 cm-1 to 2700 cm-1 with a spectral resolution of between 0.4 cm-1 and 1 cm-1. In order to extract the thermal radiation absorbed by individual gases, the interfering background radiances at the top of the atmosphere are simulated using the radiative transfer code MODTRAN (MODerate spectral resolution atmospheric TRANsmittance). The simulations incorporated the temperature and water vapor profiles taken from NCEP (National Centers for Environmental Prediction) reanalyses. The differences between the simulated background radiance and AIRS-measured radiance result in the absorption of upward longwave radiation by atmospheric gases (i.e. greenhouse effect). The extracted absorption bands of individual gases will allow us to quantify the radiative forcing of individual greenhouse gases and thus those data will be useful for climate change studies and for the validation of radiative transfer codes used in general circulation models.
The purpose of this study is to develop snow and sea ice detection algorithm in Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) meteorological data processing system. Since COMS has only five channels, it is not affordable to use microwave or shortwave infrared data which are effective and generally used for snow detection. In order to estimate snow and sea ice coverage, combinations between available channel data(mostly visible and 3.7 ${\mu}m$) are applied to the algorithm based on threshold method. As a result, the COMS snow and sea ice detection algorithm shows reliable performance compared to MODIS products with channel limitation. Specifically, there is partial underestimation over the complicated vegetation area and overestimation over the area of high level clouds such as cirrus. Some corrections are performed by using water vapor and infrared channels to remove cloud contamination and by applying NDVI to detect more snow pixels for the underestimated area.
The thermal contamination of the Younggwang coastal marine ecosystem has been investigated using space borne thermal infrared data acquired over the period 1985-2003 by the Landsat and NOAA satellites. The analysis of AVHRR data brought out the general pattern and extension of thermal plume while TM data yielded more accurate information about the plume shape, dimension, dispersion direction etc. The examination of sea surface temperature (SST) computed from these images clearly indicates that the thermal plume extends 70 to100km southward during summer and 50 to70km northwestward during winter monsoons. The maximum plume temperature was 29$^{\circ}C$ in summer and 12$^{\circ}C$ in winter. The comparative analysis shows that the temperature retrieved from TM is slightly higher (1.8$^{\circ}C$, 3$^{\circ}C$ and 2.2$^{\circ}C$ for the images of 98/11/10, 99/05/05 and 99/05/21 respectively) than those derived from AVHRR data. The correlation coefficient between the TM-derived SST and AVHRR-derived SST was 0.72.

Infrared (IR) spectroscopy is a powerful technique for observing organic molecules, as it combines sensitive vibrational excitations with a non-destructive probe. However, gaseous volatile compounds in the air are challenging to detect, as they are not easy to immobilize in a sensing device and give enough signal by themselves. In this study, we fabricated a thin nanocrystalline metal-organic framework (nMOF) film on a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) substrate to enhance the IR vibration signal of the gaseous volatile compounds captured within the nMOF pores. Specifically, we synthesized nanocrystalline HKUST-1 (nHKUST-1) particles of ca. 80 nm diameter and used a colloidal dispersion of these particles to fabricate nHKUST-1 films by a spin-coating process. After finding that benzene was readily adsorbed onto nHKUST-1, an nHKUST-1 film deposited on a plasmonic Au substrate was successfully applied to the IR detection of gaseous benzene in air using surface-enhanced IR spectroscopy.
This paper described an off-axis five-mirror-anastigmatic telescope. It is composed of three aspheric surfaces and one spherical surface while the third mirror and fifth mirror have the same parameters at the same place. This configuration is useful for having wide field of view. The strip full field of view for the near infrared telescope is $20^{\circ}{\times}0.2^{\circ}$. The entrance pupil is located in front of the first mirror. There is an intermediate image between the second mirror and the third mirror. The entrance pupil diameter is 100 mm and the effective focal length is 250 mm. The spectral range is $0.85-1.75{\mu}m$. The pixel pitch is $15{\mu}m$. The image quality is near the diffraction limit. Some methods were used to restrain the stray light such as a field stop near the intermediate image, the baffle, the narrow-band pass filter and a stop in front of the focal plane.
In this study, an algorithm to estimate Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT) over small cities during nighttime has been developed by using the radiance from artificial light sources in small cities measured from Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) sensor's Day/Night Band (DNB) aboard the Suomi-National Polar Partnership (Suomi-NPP) satellite. The algorithm is based on Beer's extinction law with the light sources from the artificial lights over small cities. AOT is retrieved for cloud-free pixels over individual cities, and cloud-screening was conducted by using the measurements from M-bands of VIIRS at infrared wavelengths. The retrieved nighttime AOT is compared with the aerosol products from MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard Terra and Aqua satellites. As a result, the correlation coefficients over individual cities range from around 0.6 and 0.7 between the retrieved nighttime AOT and MODIS AOT with Root-Mean-Squared Difference (RMSD) ranged from 0.14 to 0.18. In addition, sensitivity tests were conducted for the factors affecting the nighttime AOT to estimate the range of uncertainty in the nighttime AOT retrievals. The results of this study indicate that it is promising to infer AOT using the DNB measaurements over small cities in Korea at night. After further development and refinement in the future, the developed retrieval algorithm is expected to produce nighttime aerosol information which is not operationally available over Korea.

In this paper, we propose ubiTrack, a system which tracks users' location in indoor environments by employing infrared-based proximity method. Most of recently developed systems have focussed on performance and accuracy. For this reason, they adopted the idea of centralized management, which gathers all information in a main system to monitor users' location. However, these systems raise privacy concerns in ubiquitous computing environments where tons of sensors are seamlessly embedded into environments. In addition, centralized systems also need high computational power to support multiple users. The proposed ubiTrack is designed as a passive mobile architecture to relax privacy problems. Moreover, ubiTrack utilizes appropriate area as a unit to efficiently track users. To achieve this, ubiTrack overlaps each sensing area by utilizing the TDM (Time-Division Multiplexing) method. Additionally, ubiTrack exploits various filtering methods at each receiver and utilization module. The filtering methods minimize unexpected noise effect caused by external shock or intensity weakness of ID signal at the boundary of sensing area. ubiTrack can be applied not only to location-based applications but also to context-aware applications because of its associated module. This module is a part of middleware to support communication between heterogeneous applications or sensors in ubiquitous computing environments.
This study presents a correlation between timber Age, image bands and vegetation indices for timber age estimation. Basically, this study used Landsat TM images of three difference years (1994, 1994, 1998) and difference between Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) and National Elevation Dataset (NED). Bands of 4, 5 and 7, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Infrared Index (II), Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) and Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SA VI) were obtained from Landsat TM images. Tasseled cap - greenness and wetness images were also made by Tasseled cap transformation. Finally, analysis of correlation between timber age, difference between Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) and National Elevation Dataset (NED), individual TM bands (4, 5, 7), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Tasseled cap-Greenness, Wetness, Infrared Index (II), Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) and Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI) using regression model. In this study about 1,992 datasets were analyzed. The Tasseled cap - Wetness, Infrared Index (II) and Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) showed close correlation for timber age estimation.
