Stereoscopic Images provide depth information with the relative distances between the objects in the images. There are many different ways to extract disparity maps from the visible spectral images. For the infrared spectral range, the same approach cannot be utilized for the innate low resolution and colorless features because typical methods require corresponding features between the images. The authors suggest a new approach that makes use of image segmentation to obtain depth information for stereoscopic millimeter-wave images. For image segmentation a selective visual attention model based on the theory of a feature-integration of attention is used. Experimental results show the proposed method provides reasonable depth information for object shape recognition and display.

In this paper, for low cost infrared optical equipment, we design and fabricate an infrared optical system for an uncooled detector using PGM(Precision Glass Molding) lenses. The designed infrared optical system has a good athermalization, and the material of all of its lenses is a chalcogenide glass suitable for the PGM method. In addition, we also fabricate the same infrared optical system using SPDT(Single Point Diamond Turning) lenses in order to measure the optical performance of PGM lenses. We measure the MTF(Modulation Transfer Function) of the two infrared optical systems which use the PGM lenses and the SPDT lenses. And then we compare and analyze the images of them both. As a result, we find that they have only a very small difference in optical performance. If the use of PGM lenses increases, we expect to reduce the cost of infrared optical equipment.
In this study, a simple method to estimate the soil water content variation in a wide area was proposed using hyperspectral near-infrared images. The reflectance data of a sand, granite soils, and a kaolinite were measured by reflecting the soil samples with different wavelengths in the visible and near-infrared (VNIR) regions using hyperspectral cameras. The measured reflectances and parameters were used to build a water content prediction model using the Partial Least Square Regression (PLSR) analysis. In the water content prediction model, the Area of Reflectance (Near-infrared, NIR) parameter was the most suitable parameter to determine the water content. The parameter was applicable regardless of the soil type, as the coefficient of determination (R2) exceeded 0.9 for each soil sample. Additionally, the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) was less than 15% when compared with the actual water content of the soil. Therefore, the predictability of water content variation for soils with water content lower than 50% was confirmed. Accordingly through this study, the predictability of water content variation in several soil types using the hyperspectral near-infrared images was confirmed. For further development, a model that incorporates soil classification would be required to improve the accuracy of the model and to predict higher range of water contents.

We propose a method for target detection in Infrared images. In order to effectively detect a target region from an image with noises and clutters, spatial information of the target is first considered by analyzing pixel distributions of projections in horizontal and vertical directions. These distributions are represented as Gaussian distributions, and Gaussian Mixture Model is created from these distributions in order to find thresholding points of the target region. Through analyzing the calculated Gaussian Mixture Model, the target region is detected by eliminating various backgrounds such as noises and clutters. This is performed by using a novel thresholding method which can effectively detect the target region. As experimental results, the proposed method has achieved better performance than existing methods.

In order to increase the survivability of combatant ship, measuring and analyzing the infrared radiation is important. Consequently, providing analysis report is also important for the progress of the new combatant ship design. This paper proposes a design and software implementation of filtering for the noise reduction of mid-wave IR camera image. We reduced the total test cost by using the suggested software filtering technique instead of hardware replacement or re-calibration. In addition, we enhanced the accuracy of analysis results by adjusting the parameters of software filtering according to the results of filtered image.
The conversion of an invisible thermal radiation pattern of an object into a visible image using infrared (IR) thermal technology is very useful to understand phenomena what we are interested in. Although IR thermal images were originally developed for military and space applications, they are currently employed to determine thermal properties and heat features in various applications, such as the non-destructive evaluation of industrial equipment, power plants, electricity, military or drive-assisted night vision, and medical applications to monitor heat generation or loss. Recently, IR imaging-based monitoring systems have been considered for application in agricultural, including crop care, plant-disease detection, bruise detection of fruits, and the evaluation of fruit maturity. This paper reviews recent progress in the development of IR thermal imaging techniques and suggests possible applications of thermal imaging techniques in agriculture.

Infrared thermography is one of the most valuable and cost-effective diagnostic techniques for predictive maintenance on electrical systems. For the electric installations, the thermographies can identify major problems, which if left unattended could lead to breakdowns. The result thermal images depend upon operator skills, inspection technique, and load and weather conditions. When the thermographer is applied to remote monitoring, the conditions of the systems are not perfectly analyzed because operators are hard to know the weather's effects of the installed place. Therefore, this paper defines the effects by weather conditions which will influence the final results. The purpose of this paper is to define the weather effects that a thermographer needs to consider for successful condition analysis.
We introduce a technical approach for reducing three-dimensional infrared (IR) spectroscopic data generated by integral field spectroscopy or slit-scanning observations. The first part of data reduction using IRAF presents a guideline for processing spectral images from long-slit IR spectroscopy. Multichannel image reconstruction, Image Analysis and Display (MIRIAD) is used in the later part to construct and analyze the data cubes which contain spatial and kinematic information of the objects. This technic has been applied to a sample data set of diffuse 2.1218 ${\mu}m$$H_2$ 1-0 S(1) emission features observed by slit-scanning around Sgr A East in the Galactic center. Details of image processing for the high-dispersion infrared data are described to suggest a sequence of contamination cleaning and distortion correction. Practical solutions for handling data cubes are presented for survey observations with various configurations of slit positioning.

The quality of natural outdoor images captured by visible camera sensors is usually degraded by the haze present in the atmosphere. In this paper, a fast image dehazing method based on visible image and near-infrared fusion is proposed. In the proposed method, a visible and a near-infrared (NIR) image of the same scene is fused based on the dual-tree complex wavelet transform (DT-CWT) to generate a dehazed color image. The color of the fusion image is regulated through haze concentration estimated by dark channel prior (DCP). The experiment results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the conventional dehazing methods and effectively solves the color distortion problem in the dehazing process.
Young Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) are where we can observe closely supernova (SN) ejecta and their interaction with the circumstellar/interstellar medium. They also provide an opportunity to explore the explosion and the final stage of the evolution of massive stars. Near-infrared (NIR) emission lines in SNRs mostly originate from shocked dense material. In shocked SN ejecta, forbidden lines from heavy ions are prominent, while in shocked circumstellar/interstellar medium, [Fe II] and $H_2$ lines are prominent. [Fe II] lines are strong in both media, and therefore [Fe II] line images provide a good starting point for the NIR study of SNRs. There are about twenty SNRs detected in [Fe II] lines, some of which have been studied in NIR spectroscopy. We will review the NIR [Fe II] observations of SNRs and introduce our recent NIR spectroscopic study of the young core-collapse SNR Cas A where we detected strong [P II] lines.
