  • The ability of the searcher to express their information problem to an information retrieval system is fundamental to the retrieval process. Query by visual example is the principal query paradigm for expressing queries in a content-based image retrieval environment yet there is little empirical evidence to support its efficacy in facilitating query formulation. The aim of this research was to investigate the usability of the query by colour method in supporting a range of information problems in order to contribute to the gap in knowledge regarding the relationship between searchers' information problems and the query methods required to support efficient and effective visual query formulation. The results strongly suggest that the query method does not support visual query formulation and that there is a significant mismatch between the searchers information problems and the expressive power of the retrieval paradigm.

  • This study does a qualitative and quantitative analysis of how music by humming is being used by music educators in the classroom. Music by humming is part division of music information retrieval. In order to define what a music information retrieval system is first I need to define what it is. Berger and Lafferty (1999) define information retrieval as "someone doing a query to a retrieval system, a user begins with an information need. This need is an ideal document- perfect fit for the user, but almost certainly not present in the retrieval system's collection of documents. From this ideal document, the user selects a group of identifying terms. In the context of traditional IR, one could view this group of terms as akin to expanded query." Music Information Retrieval has its background in information systems, data mining, intelligent systems, library science, music history and music theory. Three rounds of surveys using question pro where completed. The study found that there were variances in knowledge, training and level of awareness of query by humming, music information retrieval systems. Those variance relationships where based on music specialty, level that they teach, and age of the respondents.

  • This paper deals with the problems of information retrieval through full-test database which arise from both the deficiency of searching strategies or methods by information searcher and the difficulties of query representation, generation, extension, etc. In oder to solve these problems, we should use automatic retrieval instead of manual retrieval in the past. One of the ways to make the gap narrow between the terms by the writers and query by the searchers is that the query should be searched with the terms which the writers use. Thus, the preconditions which should be taken one accorded way to solve the problems are that all areas of information retrieval such as should taken one accorded way to solve the problems are that all areas of information retrieval such as contents analysis, information structure, query formation, query evaluation, etc. should be solved as a coherence way. We need to deal all the ares of automatic information retrieval for the efficiency of retrieval thought this paper is trying to solve the design of thesaurus browser. Thus, this paper shows the theoretical analyses about the form of information retrieval, automatic indexing, clustering technique, establishing and expressing thesaurus, and information retrieval technique. As the result of analyzing them, this paper shows us theoretical model, that is to say, the thesaurus browser by clustering algorithm. The result in the paper will be a theoretical basis on new retrieval algorithm.

  • Pre-retrieval query formulation is an important step for identifying local text reuse. Local reuse with high obfuscation, paraphrasing, and translation poses a challenge of finding the reused text in a document. In this paper, three pre-retrieval query formulation strategies for heuristic retrieval in case of low obfuscated, high obfuscated, and translated text are studied. The strategies used are (a) Query formulation using proper nouns; (b) Query formulation using unique words (Hapax); and (c) Query formulation using most frequent words. Whereas in case of low and high obfuscation and simulated paraphrasing, keywords with Hapax proved to be slightly more efficient, initial results indicate that the simple strategy of query formulation using proper nouns gives promising results and may prove better in reducing the size of the corpus for post processing, for identifying local text reuse in case of obfuscated and translated text reuse.

  • Query by visual example is the principal query paradigm for expressing queries in a content-based image retrieval environment. Query by image and query by sketch have long been purported as being viable methods of query formulation yet there is little empirical evidence to support their efficacy in facilitating query formulation. The ability of the searcher to express their information problem to an information retrieval system is fundamental to the retrieval process. The aim of this research was to investigate the query by image and query by sketch methods in supporting a range of information problems through a usability experiment in order to contribute to the gap in knowledge regarding the relationship between searchers' information problems and the query methods required to support efficient and effective visual query formulation. The results of the experiment suggest that query by image is a viable approach to visual query formulation. In contrast, the results strongly suggest that there is a significant mismatch between the searchers information problems and the expressive power of the query by sketch paradigm in supporting visual query formulation. The results of a usability experiment focusing on efficiency (time), effectiveness (errors) and user satisfaction show that there was a significant difference, p<0.001, between the two query methods on all three measures: time (Z=-3.597, p<0.001), errors (Z=-3.317, p<0.001), and satisfaction (Z=-10.223, p<0.001). The results also show that there was a significant difference in participants perceived usefulness of the query tools Z=-4.672, p<0.001.

  • In this paper, we present the HVIS (Hybrid Video Information System) which bolsters up meaning retrieval of all the various users by integrating feature-based retrieval and annotation-based retrieval of unformatted formed and massive video data. HVIS divides a set of video into video document, sequence, scene and object to model the metadata and suggests the Two layered Hybrid Object-oriented Metadata Model(THOMM) which is composed of raw-data layer for physical video stream, metadata layer to support annotation-based retrieval, content-based retrieval, and similarity retrieval. Grounded on this model, we presents the video query language which make the annotation-based query, content-based query and similar query possible and Video Query Processor to process the query and query processing algorithm. Specially, We present the similarity expression to appear degree of similarity which considers interesting of user. The proposed system is implemented with Visual C++, ActiveX and ORACLE.

  • For the users of information retrieval systems, natural language query is the more ideal interface, compared with keyword and boolean expressions. This paper proposes a retrieval technique with expanded keyword from syntactically-analyzed structures of natural language query as user input. Through the steps combining or splitting the compound nouns based on syntactic tree traversal of the query, and expanding the other-formed or shorten-formed into multiple keyword, it can enhance the precision and correctness of the retrieval system.

  • The primary purpose of this study was to investigate a robust search methodology that could be used in full-text information retrieval systems. A robust search methodology is one that can be easily used by a variety of users (particularly naive users) and it will give them comparable search performance regardless of their different expertise or interests In order to develop a possibly robust search methodology, a fully functional prototype of a fuzzy knowledge based information retrieval system was developed. Also, an experiment that used this prototype information retreival system was designed to investigate the performance of that search methodology over a small exploratory sample of user queries To probe the relatonships between the possibly robust search performance and the query organization using fuzzy inference logic, the search performance of a shallow query structure was analyzes. Consequently the following several noteworthy findings were obtained: 1) the hierachical(tree type) query structure might be a better query organization than the linear type query structure 2) comparing with the complex tree query structure, the simple tree query structure that has at most three levels of query might provide better search performance 3) the fuzzy search methodology that employs a proper levels of cut-off value might provide more efficient search performance than the boolean search methodology. Even though findings could not be statistically verified because the experiments were done using a single replication, it is worth noting however, that the research findings provided valuable information for developing a possibly robust search methodology in full-text information retrieval.

  • In semantic information retrieval, we first need to build domain ontology and second, we need to convert the users' search keywords into a standard query such as SPARQL. In this paper, we propose a method that can automatically convert the users' search keywords into the SPARQL queries. Furthermore, our method can ensure effective performance in a specific domain such as law. Our method constructs the keyword history ontology by associating each keyword with a series of information when there are multiple keywords. The constructed ontology will convert keyword history ontology into SPARQL query. The automatic transformation method of SPARQL query proposed in the paper is converted into the query statement that is deemed the most appropriate by the user's intended keywords. Our study is based on the existing legal ontology constructions that supplement and reconstruct schema and use it as experiment. In addition, design and implementation of a semantic search tool based on legal domain and conduct experiments. Based on the method proposed in this paper, the semantic information retrieval based on the keyword is made possible in a legal domain. And, such a method can be applied to the other domains.

  • Professional knowledge such as legal information is commonly not accessible or cannot be easily understood by the public. By using the legal ontology which is previously established, the legal information retrieval based on ontology is to use for the information retrieval. In this paper, we propose the matters required for the design and develop of the framework for the legal information retrieval based on ontology. The framework is composed of the query conversion engine of SPARQL base for query to OWL ontology and user query type engine and return value refinement engine and web interface engine. The framework does the role as the infrastructure which retrieval the legal ontology effectually and which it serves and can be used in the semantic legal information retrieval service.
