  • Social media is increasingly being used as a source of information during crises, such as natural disasters and civil unrests. However, the quality and truthfulness of user-generated information on social media have been a cause of concern. Many users find distinguishing between true and false information on social media difficult. Basing on the elaboration likelihood model and the motivation, opportunity, and ability framework, this study proposes and empirically tests a model that identifies the information processing routes through which users develop trust, as well as the factors that influence the use of these routes. The findings from a survey of Twitter users seeking information about the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear crisis indicate that individuals evaluate information quality more when the crisis information has strong personal relevance or when individuals have low anxiety about the crisis. By contrast, they rely on majority influence more when the crisis information has less personal relevance or when these individuals have high anxiety about the crisis. Prior knowledge does not have significant moderating effects on the use of information quality and majority influence in forming trust. This study extends the theorization of trust in user-generated information by focusing on the process through which users form trust. The findings also highlight the need to alleviate anxiety and manage non-victims in controlling the spread of false information on social media during crises.

  • In this paper, a new document summarization method, which uses the semantic features and the pseudo relevance feedback (PRF) by using WordNet, is introduced to extract meaningful sentences relevant to a user query. The proposed method can improve the quality of document summaries because the inherent semantic of the documents are well reflected by the semantic feature from NMF. In addition, it uses the PRF by the semantic features and WordNet to reduce the semantic gap between the high level user's requirement and the low level vector representation. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves better performance that the other methods.

  • The library collects relevant documents, organizes these documents, retrieves and provides relevant documents, and helps the user use provided documents. These library activities are the distribution process of relevant documents in a society, and the role of library science is to deal with several problems in this process. This process is to facilitate the production of socially relevant documents, to select documents relevant to an individual user, and to enable the user to use the selected documents. As a result, this process should be based on the concept of "relevance". As a result, the academic role of library science should be considered based on "relevance". "Relevance" is getting more important to meet the change of the environment of library services, which is getting more complex and changing rapidly because of the computer and the computer network. It is true that these are very important tool for document distribution. However, the problems in the document distribution can not be solved only by the simple development of these tools because these have been caused by the simple development of these tools. These problems can be solved only through many studies of the user, which is the destination of document distribution, and through a n.0, pplying the results of these studies to designing these tools.dies to designing these tools.

  • In conventional boolean retrieval systems, document ranking is not supported and similarity coefficients cannot be computed between queries and documents. The MMM, Paice and P-norm models have been proposed in the past to support the ranking facility for boolean retrieval systems. They have common properties of interpreting boolean operators softly. In this paper we propose a new soft evaluation method for Information retrieval using query splitting relevance feedback model. We also show through performance comparison that query splitting relevance feedback(QSRF) is more efficient and effective than MMM, Paice and P-norm.

  • In this study, a retrieval system taking advantage of term relationship in a specific domain and also of evidential reasoning as tools for measuring relevance is implemented. For this experiment, techincal memoranda documented in Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) served as a sample document file. Sample knowledge base was prepared by extracting terms and term relations pertaining to telecommunications from INSPEC thesaurus. Relations between terms were represented by numerical values according to types of term relations. Relationship between a query and a document was measured according to Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence. As a result of this experiment, a more comprehensive search was made by expanding search terms utilizing term relations. Measure of relevance represented by reflecting term relations, and search results were listed in a descending order of relevance.

  • To delve into the semantic gap problem of the automatic video summarization, we focused on an endogenous ERP responses at around 400ms and 600ms after the on-set of audio-visual stimulus. Our experiment included two factors: the topic exploration of experimental conditions (Topic Given vs. Topic Exploring) as a between-subject factor and the topic relevance of the shots (Topic-Relevant vs. Topic-Irrelevant) as a within-subject factor. For the Topic Given condition of 22 subjects, 6 short historical documentaries were shown with their video titles and written summaries, while in the Topic Exploring condition of 25 subjects, they were asked instead to explore topics of the same videos with no given information. EEG data were gathered while they were watching videos in real time. It was hypothesized that the cognitive activities to explore topics of videos while watching individual shots increase the amplitude of endogenous ERP at around 600 ms after the onset of topic relevant shots. The amplitude of endogenous ERP at around 400ms after the onset of topic-irrelevant shots was hypothesized to be lower in the Topic Given condition than that in the Topic Exploring condition. The repeated measure MANOVA test revealed that two hypotheses were acceptable.

  • We examine the effects of the sustainability report (SURE) and investment decision on share price (SPRC). Explore whether the sustainability report changes the value-relevance of financial accounting variables indirectly. It is evident that the number of banks is only 12, which are all banks in Saudi Arabia, and we have included all of them in the final sample. Moreover, the same number of banks applied for the analysis concerning the accounting variables. This article utilizes a panel dataset from a sample of Saudis registered banks from the first quarter of 2014 to the last quarter of 2018. We utilize a balanced sample that contains all banks listed in Tadawul, 240 observations. Run GLM regression to tests the relationships. Findings exhibit that investors value the complementary disclosure of accounting information provided in SURE, and this disclosure produces a positive effect on SPRC. The SURE figure is robustly significant, suggesting that the market assigns a positive-significant correlation to the further information in the SURE. The indirect effects show that BPS×SURE is a positive-significant effect on SPRC, whereas EPS×SURE is positively-insignificant. The analysis shows that SURE's value relevance conforms through Saudis Banks, consistent with the hypothesis that diverse institutional perspectives probably influence the value-relevance of SURE.

  • This study compared finding economic and energy information on the WWW to finding the same information on DIALOG, a traditional search service. Professional searchers answered 20 questions for end users using either of DIALOG and one Internet database (general search engine or Web database). The relevance of the results in both sets of answers was ranked by searchers and end-users, respectively. The study found that searching for information on the Web took at least twice as long as it did when using DIALOG. Relevance rating was a little higher for materials found on DIALOG. However, the relevance rating difference between two systems was not so higher than we expected. From the research results, we conclude that Internet database including Web database and general search engines is providing valuable information of economic and energy subject areas.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate what level of difference in precision would be significantly perceived by a human user of an information retrieval system. Not many researches have been conducted with regards to this issue in information retrieval field. Despite the non-significant results, there were several interesting findings in recognizing different levels of precision rates. The correctness of relevance task had little to do with the taken time for the task. In addition, the strong relationship between the subjects' topic familiarity and rate of correct judgments is one of the most interesting results in this study. It turned out that the subjects have more difficulty in a situation they have to judge between the two lists having more non-relevant documents than in a situation they do between the lists haying more relevant documents. Finally, the serious influence from the first top N documents in a list for relevance judgment task has been confirmed.

  • This paper presents the application of best match search algorithm in the client/server system for natural language access to Web-based database. For this purpose, the procedures to process Korean word variants as well as to execute probabilistic weighting scheme have been implemented in the client/server system. The experimental runs have been done using a Korean test set which included documents, queries and relevance judgements. The experimental results demonstrate that best match retrieval with relevance information is better than the retrieval without it.
