The participants were recruited from the patients receiving cancer chemotherapy in a university hospital. They were seven cancer patients with stomach cancer and two with liver cancer at the ending period of their chemotherapy protocol. Participants were interviewed on discharge date of last treatment and when they returned for the first outpatient follow-up. The focus question was 'what are your needs at this point?' The interviews were audio-taped and transcribed before analysis. The data were analyzed for common categories, special analytic categories, and conceptual categories. Results: Thirty two common categories, ten special analytic categories, and six conceptual categories were identified as patient's needs. The six conceptual categories were comfort needs, social needs, information needs, humanism needs, environmental needs, and self-efficacy needs. Conclusion: There were characteristic specific patients' needs when chemotherapy ends. There are needs to develop and to apply nursing intervention for cancer patients.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the needs of high school students on foodservice. A survey from 8 high school foodservice operations in Seoul was undertaken and detailed information was collected from 538 high school students. Completed questionnaires were received from 3 self-operated and 5 contracted school foodservice operations. Statistical analyses were performed by SPSS including descriptive analysis and t-test. The 49.8% of the respondent students were male and 50.2% female. The whole students assessed the importance and performance of school foodservice as 4.18 and 2.83 out of 5 respectively, which suggests that the school foodservice needs to be improved. The Importance-Performance Analysis(IPA) used for obtaining information on high school foodservice management suggested that foodservice attributes with fair to poor performance but with high importance were sanitation of food, service of foodservice personnel, dealing with complaints and the reflection of students'opinion in menu.

  • Images have been substantially searched and used due to not only the advanced internet and digital technologies but the characteristics of a younger generation. The purpose of this study aims to discuss the ways on expanding the access points to images by analyzing the needs of users in context of everyday life. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, 105 questions of image seeking in NAVER, which is one of social Q&A services in Korea, were analyzed. For the analysis, a two-dimensional framework with image uses and image attributes were utilized. The findings of this study demonstrate that considerable use purposes on data oriented pole, such as information processing, information dissemination and learning are identified. On the other hand, image attributes from the needs of image show that non-visual aspects including contextual attributes are recognized substantially in addition to the traditional semantic attributes.

  • Academic libraries need to select and purchase essential collections to support students and faculty in education and research. Therefore, libraries reflect patrons' information needs on collection development through patron purchase requests. This study analyzed the pattern and efficiency of patron purchase requests in a longer-term perspective; for over a decade. Patron purchase requests show different tendencies depending on academic characteristics, which enabled libraries to identify the users' information needs in various subjects. Typically users contributed to collection development by expressing information needs in their fields of study through purchase requests. In the meantime, users in certain fields showed interest in other subject areas besides their own to select general books on various topics. Through this study, it became evident that a major portion of library collections were affected by active purchase requests from a small number of users. However those books were proven to be in demand in terms of effectiveness. Patron-driven acquisition is being implemented as an effective collection development policy.

  • In order to effectively provide science, technology, engineering, and medicine (STEM) information, an analysis of information users' needs and understanding of information usage behavior must be preceded. Rapid changes and developments in information and communication technologies and the environment have greatly influenced the user's information usage environment. Based on the changes and characteristics of users' information use and their information needs analysis, active design and improvement of scientific and technical information service system is needed. For this study, a total of 816 participants participated: 204 people in four main contents (papers, reports, trends, and patents) through significant allocation extraction for STEM information users. A survey was conducted to grasp the status of the use of science and technology information using quantitative methods through online surveys for users of each content (papers, reports, trends, patents). Based on the analysis results, the implications for the improvement of STEM field information system were drawn.

  • Nation-wide support is being strengthened to vitalize pre-entrepreneur and startup initiatives. However, it is found that they have been suffering from the lack of necessary information in preparation for the start-up operation. In order to support more proactive and robust start-up process in aspect of contents or service, it is necessary to carefully analyze their information needs and information seeking behaviors. Information seeking behavior analysis is a method for improving information services in accordance with the information needs of the information service users in libraries and information service institutes. This study analyzed information seeking behaviors of pre-entrepreneur and startup. Focus-group interview as the representative method of exploring information seeking behaviors was conducted. Content analysis was introduced to search the business-establishing process, information-seeking status, and utilization level of startup-related information resources and their perception. It is expected that contents and services for pre-entrepreneur and startup would be improved by reflecting their information seeking behaviors based on the results of this study.

  • In this study, we investigated the information users' needs and information seeking behavior in the field of science and technology. We found that the science and technology researchers most frequently needed information while conducting the research & development related tasks and drafting research papers. The researchers attributed the main sources of research ideas to be the communication among colleagues and the literature review. The researchers's most preferred information sources were digital libraries, web search engines, and academic information portal. In conclusion, the science and technology researchers regarded the online use of electronic materials as the primary source of information. We hope that this investigation reported herein to be the foundation for developing user-centered information services for the science and technology discipline.

  • The KOSHA codes H-31 and H-30 provide general guidelines to establish a prevention program for work-related musculoskeletal disorders(WMSD). Understanding of the components and practitioner needs for a WMSD prevention program is necessary for effective revision and implementation of the KOSHA codes. The present study established a comprehensive structure for a WMSD prevention program and surveyed practitioner needs for the KOSHA codes. The comprehensive prevention program structure, consisting of 7 parts(organization, education, risk management, medical management, program evaluation, and record keeping) and 90 items, was constructed by analyzing WMSD prevention guidelines published by various government agencies such as KOSHA, OSHA and NIOSH. Next, 20 practitioners, from four industry sectors(auto manufacturing, auto part manufacturing, shipbuilding, and machinery), working in a safety and health department or labor union, were interviewed to collect opinions for the KOSHA codes in terms of relevance, government support, and additional information needed. Guidelines of the KOSHA codes requiring modifications and government supports were identified, which can be used to revise the KOSHA codes and to establish a government policy to promote the implementation of the KOSHA codes. Lastly, the survey revealed that integrated, customized, quantitative, and case information for WMSD prevention is additionally needed, which can be used as design guidelines for a WMSD prevention program manual for practitioners.

  • Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), particularly remote monitoring, is an emerging field with great potential to help infrastructure owners obtain more and up-to-date knowledge of their structures. The methodology could provide supplemental information to guide the frequency and extent of visual inspections, and the possible need for maintenance. The instrumentation for a SHM system needs to be developed with longevity and the objectives for the system in mind. Sensors need to be selected for reliability and durability, sited where they provide the maximum information for the objectives, and where they can be accessed and replaced should the need arise over the monitoring period. With the rapid changes now occurring with sensors and software, flexibility needs to be in place to allow the system to be upgraded over time. Damage detection needs to be considered in terms of the type of damage that needs to be detected, informing maintenance requirements, and how detection can be achieved. Current vibration analysis techniques appear not yet to have achieved the necessary sensitivity for that purpose. Societal factors will influence the design of a SHM system in terms of the sophistication of the instrumentation and methodology employed.
