  • In this paper we have investigated the guiding properties of photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) with a square-lattice of air-holes in the cladding. We have shown numerical results of PCFs with various air hole sizes and hole-to-hole spacings over a wide wavelength range. The group velocity dispersion, effective area and effective refractive index of PCF have been calculated numerically. The waveguide dispersion has greatly affected the group velocity dispersion when hole-to-hole spacing is about $1{\mu}m$. The effective area is quite flat over the wide spectral range whether the hole-to-hole spacing is large or ratio of diameter to pitch is large. From the field distribution, we found that the field is tightly confined within the core region of PCF when the pitch is $3{\mu}m$ and the air-filling fraction is 0.9.

  • A new method for temperature compensation of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) using hi-metal is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Bi-metal bends toward the metal of low temperature expansion coefficient as the temperature increases, and this property is utilized to cancel the thermo-optic effect of the fiber. The optimum thickness of the high coefficient metal was empirically found by the trial-and-error method. The temperature sensitivities were 8.1 pm/$^{\circ}C$ and -0.018 pm/$^{\circ}C$ for the uncompensated and compensated FBGs, respectively, which indicates a reduction to a mere 0.22 % of the original sensitivity. No appreciable change in the spectral shape was observed. The packaging technique described in this paper is simple and compact, and it can be used for FBGs in WDM and DWDM communication systems that have stringent requirements on the temperature stability of the components.

  • The wavelength demultiplexer is an essential component in optical transmission systems using wavelength-division multiplexing(WDM), which can increase the number of channels and information capacity of optical fibers. For optical telecommunication, much attention has been given to demultiplexing two wavelengths in the 1.3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of low dispersion band and 1.55${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of low loss window. Various integrated-optical devices have been proposed to perform this function, including conventional directional couplers, asymmetric Y-branching devices, asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometers and two-mode interference devices. • DC and low frequency noise characteristics of InGaP/InGaAs pseudomorphic HEMTs (p-HEMTs) grown by compound source MBE are investigated for temperature range of 150K to 370K. Equivalent input noise spectra( $S_{iv}$ ) were measured as a function of frequency and temperature. $S_{iv}$ was measured to be 3.4 $\times$ 10$^{-12}$ $V^2$/ Hz at 1kHz for 1.3 X 50${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$$^2$InGaP/InGaAs p-HEMT at room temperature. Measurements of the low-frequency noise spectra of the p-HEMT as a function of temperature show that the trap with an activation energy level around 0.589 eV is a dominant trap that accounts for the low-frequency noise behavior of the device. The normalized extrinsic gm frequency dispersion of the p-HEMT. was as low as 2.5% at room temperature, indicating that the device has well-behaved low-frequency noise characteristics. Sub-micron (0.25 $\times$ 50${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$$^2$) gate p-HEMT showed $f_{T}$ and $f_{max}$ of 40GHz and 108GHz, respectively.y.y.

  • In this paper, we propose a hybrid cooperative scheme to improve the secrecy rate for a cooperative network in presence of multiple relays. Each relay node transmits the mixed signal consisting of weighted source signal and intentional noise. The problem of power allocation, the joint design of beamforming and jamming weights are investigated, and an iterative scheme is proposed. It is demonstrated by the numerical results that the proposed hybrid scheme further improves secrecy rate, as compared to traditional cooperative schemes.

  • Rapid advances in information and communications technology are new challenges and also opportunities for the police. For the purpose of identifying its implications, this study reviews utilization cases of information and communications technology in the field of public security in South Korea and other countries. As theoretical basis for utilization of information and communications technology, this study introduces intelligence-led policing, predictive policing and evidence-based policing. Also, utilization of big-data based crime analysis and crime prediction technology, as well as advancement of information and communications system and command and control technology of the police, are discussed. Based on the identified implications in this study, the following proposals are made. They are (1) procuring basic data, (2) creating an integrated database, (3) increasing utilization of policy decision-makers, (4) exchange and cooperation between related institutions, (5) training professional analyzers, (6) establishing legal basis and practical guidelines for an integrated database.
