  • For increase of recycling rate of steel-making slag, the swine wastewater treatment using steel-making slag as filter media were investigated. As the discharged wastewater from the existing facilities retreated through the laboratory wastewater treatment equipment filled with steel-making slag as filter, pH of retreated wastewater was increased, and the concentration of N, P, COD and BOD were decreased. For the pilot experiment, steel-making slag eliminated suspended substances and absorbed a shock of sudden change of their concentration in influent. COD and BOD were decreased under the influence of them in influent. As calcination increased the amount of free-CaO in steel-making slag, the calcined eliminated phosphorus more effectively and increase pH than the uncalcined.

  • Laboratory scale experiments were conducted to study the applicability, and to compare the performance of two types of sequencing batch reactor (SBR)systems, a conventional SBR and sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR) on the biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal. The nitrification rate in SaR was higher than that in SBBR both in high influent TOC concentration. The denitrification was completed at the first non-aeration period in SBR, however, the additional non-aeration period should be installed or the first aeration period should be extended more in order to complete the nitrogen removal in SBBR. The time at the first aeration period was more needed as about 4-5 h in order to uptake all the released $PO_4^{3-}\;-P$ at the first non-aeration period. SBBR needed more operation time, especially the first aeration time, than SBR at the high influent TOC concentration in order to complete nitrogen and phosphorus removal.

  • The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate removal efficiency of $NH_4-N$ using the soil column. Soil, oyster shell and natural zeolite were used as a supporting media of soil column. Removal efficiencies of $NH_4-N$ were $35.9\%,\;41\%\;and\;93.4\%$ for the soil column packed with soil, natural $zeolite(20\%)$ and oyster $shell(20\%)$ at HRT of 72 hours, respectively. The addition of $20\%$ oyster shell to the soil accelerated nitrification in soil column. The influent ammonia nitrogen was mostly converted to nitrate nitrogen in the soil column and little ammonia nitrogen was found in the effluent. When the influent $NH_4-N$ concentration was 200 mg/l, the NIL-N removal was decreased at HRT of 48 hours, while nitrification was significantly increased after mechanical aeration. It was suggested that nitrification from higher $NH_4-N$ concentration was more affected by aeration in soil column process. The number of nitrifiers was approximately in a level of about $10^6\;MPN/g{\cdot}soil$ in the soil column mixed with oyster shell ($20\%$).

  • Characteristics of the upflow anaerobic filter process have been studied with six other conditions. When nitrate was mixed with influent in the bottom of the reactor, removal efficiencies of TBOD and TCOD were lower than those of TBOD and TCOD when nitrate was injected to the side of the reactor. In addition, when nitrate was injected to the side of the reactor the concentration of volatile acids of effluent was not high and ORP of effluent was lower than the mixture when nitrate was mingled with influent. It means that the bottom of the anaerobic filter played an important role in making volatile acids, methane production, and denitrification. Moreover, percentage of methane in the gas increased in accordance with increasing nitrate injection. It was because there were a lot of methane producing microorganisms which would rather use hydrogen than acetate. This reactor condition gets unstable due to provide nitrate. Therefore, higher hydrogen Pressure, shorter generation time, and lower standard Gibb's free energy gave great portion of methane of gas.

  • The objectives of this study were to find out the optimum treatment conditions for removing nitrogen in a synthetic wastewater by using microorganisms immobilized with PVA-Freezing method. The samples used as influents to the laboratory scale treatment units were a synthetic wastewater. The experiments in this study were mainly directed to collect the data of nitrogen and organic matter removal efficiencies for the different hydraulic and internal recycle rates conditions, temperature and influent C/N ratios. The removal efficiencies of nitrogen and organic matters were investigated for the operating conditions of HRT 2~12hours, internal recycle rates 50~400%, temperatures $15{\sim}30^{\circ}C$ and C/N ratios 2.5~7.5. The adequate internal recycle rate for removing T-N and $BOD_5$ in the synthetic wastewater was found to be about 300% at the temperature of $30^{\circ}C$ when the ratio of carbon contents to the nitrogen (C/N) in the influent was around 5.5. Under these conditions, the final effluent concentrations of T-N and $BOD_5$ were 8.7 and 8.4 mg/l, respectively.

  • Using the hollow fiber membrane module in a lab-scale membrane bioreactor, the anoxic- oxic (AO) process for nitrogen removal was operated for about one year. For the influent wastewater containing 1,200-1,400 mg $1^{-1}$ of CODcr and 200-310 mg $1^{-1}$ of nitrogen, this process achieved a high quality effluent of less than 30 mgCOD $liter^{-1}$ and 50 mgN $liter^{-1}$. The removal rate of organics was above 98% at a loading rate larger than 2.5 kgCOD $m^{-3}$$d^{-1}$. When the internal recycle from the oxic to the anoxic reactor changed room 2n to 600% rout the influent flow rate, the nitrogen removal rate increased from about 70 to 90% at a loading rate of 0.4 kgT-N m-s d-1. The initial increase of transmembrane pressure (TMP) was observed after a 4-month operation while maintaining the flux and MLSS concentration at 7-9 1 $m^2$ $h^{-1}$ and 6,000-14,000 mg $1^{-1}$, respectively. The TMP could be maintained below 15 cmHg for an 8-month operation. The chemical cleaning with an acid followed by an immersion in an alkali solution gave better cleaning result with the membrane operated for 10 month rather than that only by an alkali immersion.

  • The anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX) from substrates with various $NO_2-N$ and $NH_4-N$ concentationes, which were generated from piggery waste was accomplished by using anaerobic granular sludge as seeding sludge. As the result of operation, when $NO_2-N/NH_4-N$ ratios of ANAMMOX influent were 0.6~1.5, $NO_2-N/NH_4-N$ removal ratios were exhibited 1.19~2.07 (average 1.63). The higher influent $NO_2-N/NH_4-N$ ratios resulted in higher $NO_2-N/NH_4-N$ removal ratios by ANAMMOX. It means that $NO_2-N$ concentration is very important factor in ANAMMOX. Specific ammonium removal rate was constantly as $0.03{\sim}0.04gNH_4-N/g$ VSS-day at $35^{\circ}C$ while it was $0.01gNH_4-N/g$ VSS-day at $20{\sim}30^{\circ}C$. Thus, in order to reduce the effluent N concentration, either an increase of ANAMMOX reactor HRT or more biomass accumulation at the optimal temperature can be considered.

  • The performance of a newly designed wastewater treatment process equipped with an anaerobic and two intermittent aeration tanks operated alternately was investigated. During the experimental period, several types of cyclic operating schedules with different aeration and non aeration time were examined for the optimization. At all modes, the removals of organic matter and SS were highly achieved. With respect to T-N removal, however, the cycle length for aeration on/off affected the efficiencies. At the optimal operating mode, the ORP bending point indicating the disappearance of nitrate was observed. Considering the influent wastewater characteristics and cyclic operating schedules, it can be suggested that T-P removal is much more BOD/T-P ratio and/or its load dependant rather than the aeration on/off time. The results obtained from pilot-scale test showed the competitive advantage of this alternating process through an omission of nitrate recycle and operational flexibility against influent load variations when comparing with other continuous flow processes.

  • An intermittently-aerated, intermittently-decanted single-reactor process (KIDEA process : KIST intermittently decanted extended aeration process) was applied for nitrogen removal from wastewater. Synthetic wastewater with chemical oxygen demand (COD): nitrogen (N) ratio of approximately 5.25: 1 was used. The average COD removal efficiency reached above 95%, and under optimal conditions nitrogen removal efficiency also reached above 90%. This process consisted of 72 minute aeration, 48 minute settling and 24 minute effluent decanting with continuous feeding of influent wastewater from the bottom of the reactor, and did not require a separate anoxic mixing-phase. In this process, nitritation ($1^{st}$ step of nitrification) was induced but nitratation($2^{nd}$ step of nitrification) was suppressed. Main factors responsible for the accumulation of nitrite ion in the experimental condition were free ammonium and dissolved oxygen. This condition of nitrite build-up accelerated by continuous feed flow in the bottom of the KIDEA reactor because of high concentration of ammonia nitrogen in the influent. This research provides one of answers to control nitrate build-up.

  • In this study, conditions of solid phase extraction (SPE) for determination of some antibiotics such as trimethoprim, oxytetracycline, erythromycin, clarithromycin, azythromycin, doxycycline, sulfamethazine, ciprofloxacin, chlortetracycline, sulfamethoxazole in wastewaters were optimized. After the optimum volume and pH of the sample were determined, the effect of the concentration of the compounds and matrix were investigated. The highest recovery rates for antibiotic compounds were determined between 82% and 105% in 200 mL sample volume and pH 2.5. Then, antibiotic compounds were investigated in influent and effluent samples taken from Konya Urban Wastewater Treatment Plant. The concentration of the antibiotics was detected range of 0.11-101 ng/L in influent waters and
