Estuarine dams are dams constructed in estuaries for reasons such as securing freshwater resources, controlling water levels, and hydroelectric power generation. These estuarine dams alter the flow of freshwater to the coastal ocean and the tidal properties of the estuaries which has implications for the estuaries' circulation and sediment transport. A previous study has analyzed the effect of estuarine dams on 1D (along-channel) circulation and sediment transport. However, the effect of estuarine dams on the transverse variability of along-channel and across-channel circulation and sediment transport has not been studied and is not known. In this study, a coupled hydrodynamic-sediment dynamic numerical model (COAWST) was used to analyze the transverse variability of along-channel and across-channel flow and sediment transport in estuaries with estuarine dams. The estuarine dam was found to change the 3D structure of circulation and sediment transport, and the result was found to depend on the estuarine type (i.e., strongly stratified (SS) or well-mixed (WM) estuary). The SS estuary had inflow in the channel and outflow over the shoals, consistent with estuarine circulation. Longer discharge interval reduced the estuarine circulation. The WM estuary had inflow over the shoals and outflow in the channel, consistent with tide-induced circulation. As the estuarine dam was located nearer to the estuary mouth, the tide-induced circulation was reduced and replaced with estuarine circulation. The lateral circualtion was the greatest in the tide-dominated estuaries. It was reduced and changed direction due to differential advection change as the dam was located nearer the mouth. Overall, the WM estuary transverse flow structure changed the most. Lateral sediment flux was important in all estuaries, particularly for transporting sediments to the tidal flats.
Three-dimensional incompressible flow past an open cavity in a channel is investigated using Detached Eddy Simulation(DES). The length to depth ratio of the cavity is 2 and the Reynolds number defined with the cavity depth is 3,360. The DES methods are based on the Menter's SST model. In the present work, two types of inflow conditions are used: one is RANS profile, the other is LES inflow from another Large Eddy Simulation(LES) of fully developed channel flow. The results are compared with experimental data and LES results in terms of the mean statistics, temporal physics and scalar transport phenomenon of the flow.

The study on the flow characteristics and analysis of groundwater in discontinuous rock mass is very important, since the water inflow into the underground opening during excavation induces serious stability and environmental problems. To investigate the flow through single rock joint, the effect of various aperture distribution on the groundwater flow has been analyzed. Observed through the analysis is the "channel flow", the phenomenon that the flow is dominant along the path of large aperture for given joint. The equivalent hydraulic conductivity is estimated and verified through the application of the joint network analysis for 100 joint maps generated statistically. Both the analytic aproach based on isotropic continuum premise and the joint network analysis are tested and compared analyzing the gorundwater inflow for underground openings of different sizes and varying joint density. The joint network analysis is considered better to reflect the geometric properties of joint distribution in analyzing the groundwater flow.ater flow.
This study was carried out forecasting of pollution inflow of the Small Mountainous Catchment, namely; Seolma-cheon experimental catchment. Pollutographs of DO, BOD, T-N, Conductivity, T-p, pH. COD, SS from this catchment were obtained from in-situ data of total ten events using QUAL2E-PULS model. From the analysis results, between up stream(Sabang-bridge) and down stream (Memorial-bridge, outlet) obtained relation formula of water quality component. Determination coefficient of relation formula, Conductivity, COD, BOD, DO, pH, T-N, T-P, and SS showed high relation of $0.87{\sim}0.99$. The increases of DO, BOD, COD, and pH concentration of Memorial-bridge were associated with pollution inflow by road building far 2.25km from Sabang-bridge to down stream. The analysis results of QUAL2E-PULS simulation and up/down stream relation formula, pollution amounts of DO, BOD, COD and pH increased at Memorial-bridge and pollution source site. Therefore, pollution inflow can be forecasted exactly by up/down stream relation formula at pollution source site.
Three-parameter Muskingum flood routing model which incorporated the inflows alongside the river channel is applied for the Waegwan-Jeukpogyo reach of the Nakdong River using the flood data of 12 selected flood events experienced in this reach. The flood routing equations for three-parameter model were expressed as a system of finite difference equations and the routing constants were directly computed by matrix inversion method. Then, the three parameters, which consist of the storage constants(K), weighting fator(x), and lateral inflow parameter(α), were determined from the computed routing constants. The results of the present study showed that the model can predict with a fair accuracy the flood discharges at the downsteam end of the reach. The parameters K and x were seen as channel parameters which have close relations with the flood magnitude, whereas the lateral inflow parameter was shown to be strongly governed by the rainfall characteristics of the tributary watersheds contributing to the lateral inflows.
With 16 years' oceanographic data(1973-1988) of the National Fisheries Research and Development Agency and the CTD data collected by a training ship of Korea Maritime University during Nov. 6-11, 1989, the inflow path of the bottom cold water in the western channel of the Korea Strait were investigated. Temperature of the bottom water in the western channel shows the lowest in summer and large annual variation. According to the temperature distributions in the years when the bottom cold water exists in the western channel in summer, the cold water in the southwestern region of the East Sea seems to intrude into the western channel through the sea southeast 10- 15 miles off Ulsan with its properties showing slight change during advection.
The analytical diffusion model is first formulated and its characteristics are critically reviewed. The flood events during the 1985-1986 flood seasons in the IHP Pyungchang Representative Basin are routed by this model and are compared with those routed by the kinematic wave model. The present model is proven to be an excellent means of taking the backwater effects due to lateral inflow or downstream river stage variations into consideration in channel routing of flood flows. It also requires much less effort and computing time at a desired station compared to any other reliable flood routing methods.
The groundwater flow and grout flow in individual rock joint and jointed rock mass are studied using various methods of analysis such as (i) the finite difference method, (ii) channel network analysis and (iii) joint network analysis. The flow behaviour is investigated in two distinguishable scales of observation: one for a rough joint of a laboratory scale having variable aperture, and the other for field- scale rock masses having three sets of intermittent joints. In the former case, the aperture-dependent channel flow is identified for both water and grout flows. The comparison of the flow rate in a rough joint is made between the finite difference analysis and existing analytical solution. In the latter case, the effects of increasing number of joints on the groundwater inflow into a circular opening of various diameters are analyzed using both the joint network method and Goodman's analytic solution. Comparisons are made between the two methods. The boundary effects in the joint network method are discussed. The inhomogeneity of joint network and its impacts on the groundwater inflow are also discussed.
A Problem of low-velocity forced convection in a channel flow with heated wall is of practical importance and widely considered in the design of devices such as heat exchangers, and electronic equipments. Therefore, there is an urgent need for improving heat transfer performance of heated wall in the channel. In the present study, an oscillating vortex generator method is proposed to enhance the heat transfer in a channel. In this method, a rectangular bars are set in the upstream of heated region of the channel. The bars are forced to oscillate normal to the inflow, and then actively and largely generates transverse vortices behind the bars. As a result, this apparatus can enhance the heat transfer rates remarkably. Because of the interaction between the flow and oscillating bars, the variations of the flow and thermal fields become time-dependent state.
