  • Head louse infestation (HLI) is one of the most frequently occurring parasitic diseases in children. This study was conducted to investigate the socioeconomic and personal factors influencing HLI in the Republic of Korea. A total of 2,210 questionnaires about various factors related to HLI were obtained from children in 17 primary schools throughout the country. The rate of HLI was significantly lower in children who lived together with mother or in a family where both parents worked. In addition, HLI was lower in children whose fathers or mothers were public officers or teachers. However, HLI was higher in children who had small families and washed their hair less often. Education levels of parents and the number of children in family were not significant. Improvement of socioeconomic factors and personal hygiene will be helpful for reducing HLI.

  • In a pasture located at Kyong Puk area, a group of 200 Korean native casttle showed severe coughing, dyspnea and emaciation, of which 30 cattle died from the respiratory disease. To the alived cattle, clinical, pathologicoparasitological observations and treatment with terramycin, Mintic and tetramisole (Bonasol) were carried out and the following results were obtained. 1) Paroxymal coughighings, increased respiratory rate and heart rate were observed in almost all cases. But, larval output in feces was recognized in 32 percent of the cases. 2) Morderate eosinophilia was observed in a half of the cases. 3) At autopsy, lungs were enlarged, and areas of dark consolidations were scattered in all lobes. In the bronchi, numerous adult lungworms were found. 4) The adult worms detected from the bronchi were morphologically identified as Dictyocaulus viviparus. 5) The clinical signs and larval output were disappeared after the administration of Mintic or Bonasol. 6) From these results, it was concluded that the respiratory disease of the cattle was caused by the infestation of lungworm, Dictyocaulus viviparus.

  • Three types, hitherto commonly known as varieties of Solcoptes scobiei (Linnaeus, 1758) were collected from scabietic patients, pigs and dogs to couirm their taxonomic status. As a result, we consider that the mites of human and pig scabies are different subspecies [S. scobiei scohiei (Linnaeus, 1758) and S. scobiei skis Megnin, 1880, respectively], and that of dog scabies is a different species, S. canis Gerlach, 1857. Infestation rate of human scabies in Korea peaked in 1981-1982 and showed nearly 10% of prevalence rate among outpatients of the dermatology clinic, but decreased dramatically during the past ten years and now lowered below 1% since 1990. On the other hand, dog scabies seems to be increasing recently. Key words: Human scabies, dog scabies, pig scabies, taxonomy, prevalence.

  • In order to determine the epidemiological pattern of the Paragonimus westermani, the infestation rates for the cercarial and metacer-carial larvae of digenetic trematodes in the snail and crayfish hosts, and the prevalence of Paragonimus westermani among the residents in the vicinity of the stream Namdae, Wyangpi, and Kwang, in the Ulchin county, Kyungpook Province were studied from March to October in 1984. The population density of the snails per square meter of the habitats ranged from 5 to 25, with an average of 15. Among the seven habitats, one, Ducheon, had snails infested with the cercariae of Paragonimus westermani, and the proportion of infested snails was very low, the average being 0.152 per thousand. Of six hundred and four crayfish examined, 113 or 18.7 per cent harboured the encysted larvae of Paragonimus westermani. A high infestation rate for the metacercariae in the crayfish was found in two habitats; 39.0 per cent in the Ducheon and 21. 6 per cent m the Sokwang. The prevalence of Paragonimus westermani among the residents in Ulchin county was relatively high, 25.8 per cent by the Paragonimus intradermal tests, and the difference in the rate of infection between males and females was found to be significant (t>2). The results obtained in this study indicate that endemic foci of Paragonimus westermani exist in Ulchin county and the prevalence of this lung fluke among the residents is relatively high.

  • Thirty-seven species of insect pests were surveyed on different area blueberry farms in Jeonbuk province during 2013~2014. Six principal insect pests were found, including Dasineura oxycoccana Johnson, Aphis gossypii Glover, Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood, Ricania sp., Hyphantria cunea Drury, and Latoia consocia Walker. A. gossypii infestation was severe at Iksan and Jinan in middle May. S. dorsalis infestation was severe at all surveyed area in early June, which is the flowering season, and the degree of damage caused was higher in young plants. Ricania sp. was abundant in Jinan and Sunchang, and then appeared to spread across all areas in Jeonbuk. H. cunea had a tendency to concentrate in Iksan during June. Five species of Limacodidae was found, including L. consocia, which was dominant in all areas surveyed, with densities higher then those of the others four species. The degree of damage due to D. oxycoccana was higher in the plain areas (Iksan) than in the middle-mountain areas (Jinan, Sunchang). The rate of damage was 60~78% higher in young plant stages (i.e., those under 3 years of tree age) than in those over 5 years old (30~50%). Moreover, the rate of damage observed in greenhouses was 50~80% higher than that observed in the field (30~40%).

  • The pine needle gall midge (PNGM), Thecodiplosis japonensis Uchida et Inouye, is a serious pest in pine forests in Korea. Since the first report of PNGM infestation in Korea in 1929, the infestation area has been expanded gradually. In 1975 the distribution of PNGM and its parasitoids were surveyed throughout several infested areas in Korea. Annual survey has been made for the rates of gall formation by PNGM and parasitism by its parasitoids at the monitoring sites including newly infested area in 1975 since 1980. These data were used to examine the relationship between PNGM and its parasitoids for newly invaded areas. The gall forming rate of PNGM and the parasitism by the parasitoid were 34.8 and 1.9% in 1975, respectively, while the gall forming rate and the parasitism were 20.7 and 8.9% in 1985, respectively. The relationships of densities between PNGM and its parsitoid were weak in the early stage of dispersion, but the density of parasitoid was with an asymptotic increase along with PNGMs density increase during the observation period for 10 years.

  • In an attempt to clarify the epidemiological feature of C. sinensis in Mangyeong riverside area, the prevalence of clonorchiasis, infestation rate of the cercariae in Parafossarulus manchouricus, and detection rate of the metacercariae in fresh-water fishes were investigated from March 1 to September 30, 1983 at the upper, middle and lower reaches of the river. The results obtained were summarized as follows : 1. Detection rate of C. sinensis egg among inhabitants was 8.2% out of a total of 1,266 personsr, but the differences in detection rates were not statistically significant among upper, middle and lower reaches. According to sect, the detection rates were 10.3% in male and 6.1% in female (p<0.05), but by age groups, increases of the rates were observed as increase in age (p<0.05). 2. Out of a total of 380 fresh-water fishes of 32 different species, 93 fishes (25%) of 12 species were found positive with Clonorchis metacercariae, and there were differences in infection rates of the metacercariae among the fishes in 3 parts of the river; 11% in upper, 35% in middle, and 34% in lower reaches respectively. The metacercarial detection rates from various fishes were 97% in Pseudorasbora larva, Cultriculus eigenmanni (85%) , Gnathepogon strigatus (67%), Microphysogobio yaluensis (50%), Gnathopogon coreanus (47%), Pungtungia hergi (44%), Abbotting riwularis (40%), Moroco oxycephalus (33%), Coreoleuciscus splendidus (32%), Gnathepogon majimap (26%), Rhodeus ocellatus (7%), and Aphyocypris chinensis (3%) respectively. 3. Although very few p. manchouricus were collected at upper reach, 12 snails (0.7%) among a total of 1,713 were found infected with Clonorchis cercariae. Also the cercariae of Echinochasmup iapenicus (7.99%), Lexogenes liberum (0.99%), Cyathocotyle orientalis (0.75%), Esorchis oviformis (0.23%) and Asymphylodora japonica (0.05%) were detected from the snails.

  • To determine whether pinworm infections and head lice infestations spread among children in orphanages, 117 children from 4 orphanages in Busan-si and Ulsan-si, Korea, were examined for enterobiasis and head lice infestation between January and February 2014. The overall rate of Enterobius vermicularis egg positivity was 0.85%, whereas none of the children had head lice infestations. The rate of pinworm infection was much lower among the orphanage children compared to the rates observed in previous studies among kindergarten and primary school students. Moreover, the risk factors for enterobiasis were less frequent among these subjects than previously reported. The personal hygiene and health of the orphanage children were supervised by a regular, employed nurse through a health education program. In conclusion, pinworm infection was efficiently controlled among the children in orphanages, and this might be related to good personal hygiene practices in Korea.

  • Infestations of parasites, particularly those caused by copepods and monogeneans, are a major hindrance to aquaculture and have a big negative economic impact. Sebastes schlegelii, a farmed Korean rockfish, is particularly prone to copepods and monogeneans. This study comprehended how parasitic copepods and rockfish from a farm in Tongyeong-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea, are related to the monogenean trematode Microcotyle sebastis. Our research revealed that monogeneans predominated, with a rate of 98.4% and an average infection intensity of 7 per infected fish. With an average infection intensity of 4 per sick fish, the infection rate for parasitic copepods was equally considerable, coming in at 91.7%. The high co-infection rate of both parasite families, at 90.8%, is noteworthy. Furthermore, Lepeophtheirus elegans and Peniculus truncatus, 2 parasitic copepod species, were discovered to have M. sebastis eggs attached to their bodies. This demonstrates a connection between parasitic copepod infestations in farmed Korean rockfish and the monogenean trematode M. sebastis. These discoveries highlight the necessity for creating more potent parasite control methods for the aquaculture sector and shed light on the intricate relationships between various parasite species.
