  • A 2-year-old female lop-eared rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) was presented to the veterinary clinic at a zoo with pruritus, alopecia, and crusting of the ear. Examination of skin scrapes revealed an infestation with the rabbit ear mite, Psoroptes cuniculi. Weekly subcutaneous ivermectin injection over a three-week period resulted in remission of the clinical signs and improvement of the overall conditions of the rabbit.

  • Seven specimens of Sebastes melanops, black rockfish and three of S. maliger, quillback rockfish, were collected from Oregon Coast Aquarium during the period of September 19 to November 5, 2001 and examined for parasites. One monogenean helminth species and parasitic copepod species were recorded from black and quillback rockfishes, respectively. A total of 26 parasites were collected: 16 Microcotyle sebastis from the gill filaments of black and quillback rockfishes and 10 Clavella adunca were found in the fins of black rockfish. The prevalence of Microcotyle sebastis was 40.0%, and intensity of infection was 2.0(1-11). With regard to Clavella adunca, the prevalence and intensity were 20.0% and 1.4(2-8), respectively.

  • Phthirus pubis usually infests the pubis, groin, buttocks and perianal region. It can sometimes infest the thighs, abdomen, chest, axillae and beard. Eyelashes and eyebrows may be involved in children. The involvement of the scalp is very rare. We describe a case of P. pubis infestation located exclusively on the scalp in an adult woman. Neither lice/nits nor skin lesions were observed elsewhere, including eyebrows, eyelashes, axillae, pubis, buttocks and perianal region (the patient was hairless in the axillae and pubis). A review of the literature is enclosed.

  • A kind of leeches, Trachelobdella sp was detected on the inside surface of the opercle of wild crucian carp, Carassius cuvieri (21.5 cm in length and 238.5 g in weight) at a reservoir for agriculture in ChungNam Province of Korea in March, 2002. Two or three round transparent spots on the opercle could be easily detected. The fish also showed severe anemia and dorsally darking in the gill lamellae. The parasites was identified as Trachelobdella sp. on the basis of morphological characteristics such as suckers, body segmentation and lateral diverticula. As the parasites fed on host blood after attaching on the inside surface of the opercle by means of the posterior sucker, they caused severe anemia and petechial haemorrhge on the gill of infested fish. Heavy infestation of the parasite resulted in dath of fish because of large amount of blood loss.

  • Field and laboratory works were conducted to Investigate the life history, ginseng damage and chemical control effect of the field slug, Deroceras varians A. Adams. D. varians laid eggs from April to June, but a small number of eggs were also found from July to September in the field. Most young slugs grew through the slimmer months to maturity by October. overwintered beneath the moist soil surface, and began feeding and egg-laying in the following April. indicating that D varians have a life cycle in a year. Damage of ginseng plants by D. varina occurred mainly from late April to mid May in the 3rd to 5th year ginseng fields with rice-straw mulching. It seems that this damage is caused by the adults in oviposition periods and related to rice-straw mulching of ginseng fields. In the experiment, ethoprop 5% granule and metaldehyde 6% bait showed relatively high effectiveness in the control of D. varians adults. Bordeaux mixture was more effective when the chemical was sprayed after infestation of the slug than before the infestation and when the 6-12 mixture was used.

The survey was carried out during 3 months from july in 2000 to september in 2000. The results were obtained as follows : 1. Eggs of Toxocara canis were detected in 30 samples (18.5%) from 162 cases of playground. 2. The 3 kinds of eggs were isolated from the soil of playground. Those were Stronglyoides spp 23.5%, Toxocara canis 18.5% and Trichuris vulpis 4.3%. 3. It was mixed infestation such as single (74.5%), double (23.7%) and triple(1.6%).

  • The otitis externa frequently occurs in dog. The cause is mostlyan increase of bacterias (for example Staphylococcus spp. Streptococcus spp. and Psudomonas spp.) and/or yeast fungi (especially malassizia pachydermatis) and/or infestation with parasites (otodecits cynotis) which growth is promoted by a change of the microclimate in the external auditory meatus. The worse therapeutic results of medicine is explained by an intolerance and resistence of microorganisms which was often observed. In this study of dog with otitis externa developed a generalised pyoderma. This, in fact, could be a causative factor in the development of otitis externa and its recurrence. Concluded, the surgical treatment is the best method for eliminating chronic otitis externa.
