  • Due to poor linguistic communication skills of sucklings and infants, crying mostly is only means of communication to express their body conditions and desires. We, therefore, developed an infant auscultation system which detects which part of the body has a pathological problem, by analysing infant's crying sound patterns. Specifically, in this paper, we accomplished an auscultation system for congenital heart diseases detection by performing pitch, intensity and spectrum analysis of the crying sounds between the normal infants group and the congenital heart diseases group. With this system, we can diagnose congenital heart diseases of infants with poor communication capacity, and, in the near future, can build a home care diagnosis system based on crying sound analysis technologies through additional experiments on medical data.

  • An infant of a baby child who haven't communication skills through a language expresses their intention or baby condition as generally crying. Among these things, it is important to show a baby condition because their disease miss diagnosis time or remain to decide an exact diagnosis result too hard. For this, in this paper, we are going to develop system which decides where to be not good body point by analysing their face color and crying sound. Specifically, in this paper, we are going to act for baby heart diseases by doing feature extraction for their face region color and crying sound. To embody, we are going to present diagnosis method and compare analyze their crying sound a stand child, a different diseases child and a baby heart diseases child through each analyzed element. And also, we are going to extract matters to be attended to baby heart diseases through experiment and prepare objective index and an accuracy of baby heart diseases diagnosis result.

  • Spontaneous pneumomediastinum in the absence of predisposing risk factors has been rarely observed in full-term neonates. A 3-day-old neonate, delivered vaginally at term without any perinatal complications or signs of respiratory difficulty, was referred to the Seoul National University Children's Hospital because of reduced heart sound detected during routine neonatal examination. Chest computed tomography (CT) showed air collection in the anterior mediastinum. The baby developed respiratory distress on the fourth day and required supplemental oxygen. On the seventh day, there was no sign of respiratory difficulty, and x-ray examination showed no demonstrable pneumomediastinum. Hence, careful neonatal physical examination is essential during the postnatal assessment of newborns, and spontaneous pneumomediastinum should be considered when a healthy newborn presents with reduced heart sound.

  • Purpose : Pertussis was very common in the past, but reported cases have dramatically decreased. The improvement of vaccination programs and unreadiness of laboratory confirmation seems to have developed this situation. This study investigated the frequency of pertussis among infants with a paroxysmal cough and compared the clinical characteristics between infants with and without pertussis. Methods : Between June and November 2006, 27 infants admitted to the hospital that were 15-90 days old with a history of a cough for more than seven days were enrolled. The cough was described as: paroxysmal, whooping, and post-tussive vomiting. PCR and cultures for Bordetella pertussis with nasopharyngeal aspirates were obtained. The patients were divided into two groups: (1) the pertussis group that had positive results by PCR or culture; (2) the control group that had negative results by PCR and culture. Clinical and laboratory characteristics were compared between the two groups. Results : Among the 27 cases, five (18.5%) were finally diagnosed with pertussis. Only one out of the five pertussis cases was initially diagnosed with a pertussis-like syndrome on admission. Compared to the group without pertussis, the pertussis group had a significantly higher frequency of: no fever (P =0.043), a paroxysmal cough (P =0.040), cyanosis (P =0.001), non-immunized status for DTaP (P =0.047), normal auscultation (P =0.028), normal chest X-ray findings (P =0.027), high absolute lymphocyte count (P =0.039), and low CRP (P =0.046). The patients with the diagnosis of pertussis had a significantly longer duration of coughing (27.2${\pm}$10.6 vs. 12.6${\pm}$5.6 days, P =0.039). Conclusion : Pertussis should be suspected in any infant with typical symptoms of pertussis in addition to: a persistent cough without fever, accompanied by paroxysms or cyanosis prior to the age of DTaP immunization. Active laboratory confirmation should be carried out to confirm more cases with pertussis.
