Modern seismic codes rely on performance-based seismic design methodology which requires that the structures withstand inelastic deformation. Many studies have focused on the inelastic deformation ratio evaluation (ratio between the inelastic and elastic maximum lateral displacement demands) for various inelastic spectra. This paper investigates the inelastic response spectra through the ductility demand ${\mu}$, the yield strength reduction factor $R_y$, and the inelastic deformation ratio. They depend on the vibration period T, the post-to-preyield stiffness ratio ${\alpha}$, the peak ground acceleration (PGA), and the normalized yield strength coefficient ${\eta}$ (ratio of yield strength coefficient divided by the PGA). A new inelastic deformation ratio $C_{\eta}$ is defined; it is related to the capacity curve (pushover curve) through the coefficient (${\eta}$) and the ratio (${\alpha}$) that are used as control parameters. A set of 140 real ground motions is selected. The structures are bilinear inelastic single degree of freedom systems (SDOF). The sensitivity of the resulting inelastic deformation ratio mean values is discussed for different levels of normalized yield strength coefficient. The influence of vibration period T, post-to-preyield stiffness ratio ${\alpha}$, normalized yield strength coefficient ${\eta}$, earthquake magnitude, ruptures distance (i.e., to fault rupture) and site conditions is also investigated. A regression analysis leads to simplified expressions of this inelastic deformation ratio. These simplified equations estimate the inelastic deformation ratio for structures, which is a key parameter for design or evaluation. The results show that, for a given level of normalized yield strength coefficient, these inelastic displacement ratios become non sensitive to none of the rupture distance, the earthquake magnitude or the site class. Furthermore, they show that the post-to-preyield stiffness has a negligible effect on the inelastic deformation ratio if the normalized yield strength coefficient is greater than unity.
Current seismic codes require from the seismically designed structures to be capable to withstand inelastic deformation. Many studies dealt with the development of different inelastic spectra with the aim to simplify the evaluation of inelastic deformation and performance of structures. Recently, the concept of inelastic spectra has been adopted in the global scheme of the performance-based seismic design through capacity-spectrum methods. In this paper, the median of the ductility demand ratio for 80 ground motions are presented for different levels of normalized yield strength, defined as the yield strength coefficient divided by the peak ground acceleration (PGA). The influence of the post-to-preyield stiffness ratio on the ductility demand is investigated. For fixed levels of normalized yield strength, the median ductility versus period plots demonstrated that they are independent of the earthquake magnitude and epicentral distance. Determined by regression analysis of the data, two design equations have been developed; one for the ductility demand as function of period, post-to-preyield stiffness ratio, and normalized yield strength, and the other for the inelastic deformation as function of period and peak ground acceleration valid for periods longer than 0.6 seconds. The equations are useful in estimating the ductility and inelastic deformation demands for structures in the preliminary design. It was found that the post-to-preyield stiffness has a negligible effect on the ductility factor if the yield strength coefficient is greater than the PGA of the design ground motion normalized by gravity.

It is well known that Fe3Al intermetallic compound shows an anomalous peak of the yield strength at about 50$0^{\circ}C$ and then decrease at higher temperatures The dislocation structure was examined by transmission electron microscopy and high temperatures. The dislocation structure was examined by transmission electron microscopy and high temperature mechanical properties were examined by tensile and load relaxation tests. The flow stress curves obtained from load relaxation tests were then analyzed in terms of internal variable deformation theory. it was found that the flow curves consisted of three micro-deformation mechanisms -i. e inelastic deformation mode plastic deformation mode and dislocation creep deformation mode depending on both dislocation structure and deformation temperature. The flow curves could be well described by the constitutive equations of these three micro-deformation mechanisms based on the internal variable deformation theory.
To estimate the structural seismic demand, some methods are based on an equivalent linear system such as the Capacity Spectrum Method, the N2 method and the Equivalent Linearization method. Another category, widely investigated, is based on displacement correction such as the Displacement Coefficient Method and the Coefficient Method. Its basic concept consists in converting the elastic linear displacement of an equivalent Single Degree of Freedom system (SDOF) into a corresponding inelastic displacement. It relies on adequate modifying or reduction coefficient such as the inelastic deformation ratio which is usually developed for systems with known ductility factors ($C_{\mu}$) and ($C_R$) for known yield-strength reduction factor. The present paper proposes a rational approach which estimates this inelastic deformation ratio for SDOF bilinear systems by rigorous nonlinear analysis. It proposes a new inelastic deformation ratio which unifies and combines both $C_{\mu}$ and $C_R$ effects. It is defined by the ratio between the inelastic and elastic maximum lateral displacement demands. Three options are investigated in order to express the inelastic response spectra in terms of: ductility demand, yield strength reduction factor, and inelastic deformation ratio which depends on the period, the post-to-preyield stiffness ratio, the yield strength and the peak ground acceleration. This new inelastic deformation ratio ($C_{\eta}$) is describes the response spectra and is related to the capacity curve (pushover curve): normalized yield strength coefficient (${\eta}$), post-to-preyield stiffness ratio (${\alpha}$), natural period (T), peak ductility factor (${\mu}$), and the yield strength reduction factor ($R_y$). For illustrative purposes, instantaneous ductility demand and yield strength reduction factor for a SDOF system subject to various recorded motions (El-Centro 1940 (N/S), Boumerdes: Algeria 2003). The method accuracy is investigated and compared to classical formulations, for various hysteretic models and values of the normalized yield strength coefficient (${\eta}$), post-to-preyield stiffness ratio (${\alpha}$), and natural period (T). Though the ductility demand and yield strength reduction factor differ greatly for some given T and ${\eta}$ ranges, they remain take close when ${\eta}>1$, whereas they are equal to 1 for periods $T{\geq}1s$.

The prediction of the inelastic behavior of the structure is an essential part of reliability assessment procedure, because most of the failures are induced by the inelastic deformation, such as creep and plastic deformation. During decades, there has been much progress in understanding of the inelastic behavior of the materials and a lot of inelastic constitutive equations have been developed. These equations consist of the definition of inelastic strain and the evolution of the state variables introduced to quantify the irreversible processes occurred in the material. With respect to the definition of the inelastic strain, the inelastic constitutive models can be categorized into elastoplastic model, unified viscoplastic model and separated viscoplastic model and the different integration methods have been applied to each category. In the present investigation, the generalized integration method applicable for various types of constitutive equations is developed and implemented into ABAQUS by means of UMAT subroutine. The solution of the non-linear system of algebraic equations arising from time discretization with the generalized midpoint rule is determined using line-search technique in combination with Newton method. The strategy to control the time increment for the improvement of the accuracy of the numerical integration is proposed. Several numerical examples are considered to demonstrate the efficiency and applicability of the present method. Inelastic deformation behavior of metals and alloys is considered rate dependent. Uniaxial ratcheting experiments performed by Ruggles and Krempl, and Hassan and Kyriakides exhibited that higher mean stress for a fixed stress amplitude resulted in higher ratchet strain within a rate independent framework and higher stress rate resulted in lower ratchet strain, respectively. These phenomena are qualitatively investigated by numerical experiments through unified viscoplasticity theory. The theory does not separate rate-independent plasticity and rate-dependent creep, and thus uses only one inelastic strain to describe inelastic deformation processes with the concept of the yield surface. The growth law for the kinematic stress, which is a tensor valued state variable of the constitutive equations, is modified to predict the linear evolution of long-term ratchet strain.
Performance-based seismic design allows a structure to develop inelastic response during earthquakes. This modern seismic design requires more clearly defined levels of inelastic response. The ultimate deformation of a structure without total collapse (target displacement) is used to obtain the inelastic deformation capacity (inelastic performance). The inelastic performance of a structure indicates its performance under excitation. In this study, a new energy-based method to obtain the target displacement for reinforced concrete frames under cyclic loading is proposed. Concrete structures were analyzed using nonlinear static (pushover) analysis and cyclic loading. Failure of structures under cyclic loading was controlled and the new method was tested to obtain target displacement. In this method, the capacity energy absorption of the structures for both pushover and cyclic analyses were considered to be equal. The results were compared with FEMA-356, which confirmed the accuracy of the proposed method.
The effects of nitrogen on the deformation behavior of duplex stainless steel have been studied. The variation of strength was correlated with the characteristic microstructures pertaining to nitrogen. Analysis based on Hall-fetch relation confirmed that nitrogen enhances phase-boundary strengthening effect. The evolution of dislocation structure, slip traces and misorientation distribution during deformation were also characterized to elucidate the effect of nitrogen on inelastic deformation mechanism. It has been verified in this study that the higher nitrogen content provides a dual-phase microstructure with smaller strength difference between austenite and ferrite resulting into the earlier transfer of inelastic deformation from austenite to ferrite.

Ball Grid Array (BGA) is a widely used package type due to its high pin density and good heat dissipation. In BGA, solder balls play an important role in electrically connecting the package to the PCB. Therefore, understanding the inelastic deformation of solder balls under various mechanical loads is essential for the robust design of semiconductor packages. In this study, the geometrical effect on the inelastic deformation and fracture of solder balls were analyzed by finite element analysis. The results showed that fracture occurred in both tilted and hourglass shapes under shear loading, and no fracture occurred in all cases under compressive loading. However, when bending was applied, only the tilted shape failed. When shear and bending loads were combined with compression, the stress triaxiality was maintained at a value less than zero and failure was suppressed. Furthermore, a comparison using the Lagrangian-Green strain tensor of the critical element showed that even under the same loading conditions, there was a significant difference in deformation depending on the shape of the solder ball.
In the present study, the mechanical behavior of the spray-formed high speed steel was investigated employing the internal variable theory of inelastic deformation. Special attention was focused on the effect of the microstructure evolution during the hot working process, such as the distribution of carbides to provide a basic database for the production condition of high speed steels with excellent properties. The billets of high speed steel ASP30TM were fabricated by a spray forming, and the subsequently hot-rolled and heat-treated process to obtain uniformly distributed carbide structure. As noted the spray-formed high speed steel showed relatively coarser carbides than hot-rolled and heat-treated one with fine and uniformly distributed carbide structure. The step strain rate tests and high temperature tensile tests were carried out on both the spray-formed and the hot-rolled specimens, to elucidate their high temperature deformation behavior. The spray-formed high speed steel showed much higher flow stress and lower elongation than the hot-rolled and heat-treated steel. During the tensile test at $900^{\circ}C$, the interruption of the deformation for 100 seconds was conducted to reveal that the recovery was a main dynamic deformation mechanism of spray formed high speed steel. The internal variable theory of the inelastic deformation was used to analyze data from the step strain rate tests, revealing that the activation energies for hot deformation of as-spray-formed and hot-worked steels, which were 157.1 and 278.9 kJ/mol, and which were corresponding to the dislocation core and lattice diffusions of ${\gamma}-Fe$, respectively.
