Research on Participation and Position Evaluation of Korean Manufacturing Global Value Chain: Based on the Comparative Analysis with China and the United States

  • Purpose - This article will take the Korean manufacturing industry as an example to estimate Korea's global value chain status from the perspective of overall and sub-industry, hoping to provide a theoretical reference for Korean manufacturing to climb the global value chain. Design/methodology - Based on the WIOD data. The data is calculated by using MATLAB (2014a) coding. The data for 6 sectors are classified according to the International Standard Industrial Classification revision 3 (ISIC Rev. 3), the WIOD data are used to calculate and compare the position, participation and dynamics of the Korea, China and USA' manufacturing industry in the 1995-2016. Findings - The empirical results supported conclusions of the theoretical model. In the Korean GVC of electrical and optical sector, while stronger forward linkages than backward linkages to GVC are advantageous for an average advanced country, the benefits of downstream tasks are pronounced for non-advanced countries. And proved the correlation for an index to capture a country's upstream position or downstream position, it makes sense to compare that Korea's exports of intermediates in the same sector that are used by China and USA. Originality/value - The first is to re-examine the characteristics of South Korea's participation in global value chains under a more systematic and accurate theoretical framework, which provides a new empirical reference for related research; the second is to content covers of the manufacturing 6 sectors, so as to more completely describe the characteristics of Korean manufacturing's participation in global value chains; The value of this paper is providing empirical evidence of the effect of Korea's the GVC of manufacturing sectors. In the GVC of 6 sectors, first three have a higher position in the value chain and are in the upper middle and upper reaches of the GVC. The latter two have a low GVC position index, which has become the main sector that pulls down the overall position of Korea's manufacturing industry.

  • Recently environmental regulations like the Kyoto Protocol, adopted in 1997, required the reduction of the greenhouse gas of 5.2% up to 1990's emissions and 13th General Assembly in 2007, held in Bali of India, have agreed to duty reduction even in developing countries in 2013. Korean government needs research on climate change and greenhouse gas management, such as carbon emissions calculation system and the introduction of greenhouse gas reduction program. Using Top-Down approach with method of IPCC, greenhouse gas emissions from energy, transportation, agriculture, land use and forest, and waste was calculated. Total amount from Shiheung-City in 2007 was about 3,299.581 tons of greenhouse gas $CO_2$. By sectors, the total greenhouse gas emissions in the energy sector mostly accounted for 78 percent, 12 percent from transportation, 6 percent of waste, the landuse/forest sector, 4% of the greenhouse gas emissions. Approximately 5,401,618 tons of the greenhouse gas $CO_2$ was total amount from Ansan-City in 2007. The share of energy sector greenhouse gas emissions was the highest portion of 79 % and 14 percent of transportation, 4% from the waste sector, 3 % from landuse/forest sector.

Agriculture Under UNFCCC and Its Policy Implications (유엔기후변화협약의 농업부문 동향과 시사점)

  • Agriculture is a vulnerable sector to climate change because it is a primary industry directly exposed to climate. At the same time, it is a sector emitting greenhouse gases during agricultural activities, thereby affecting climate change. However, agriculture is a nascent subject under the UNFCCC. The agriculture sector needs both adaptation and mitigation. Currently, co-benefit of adaptation and mitigation is emphasized during climate change negotiation. Developing country parties are in a position to focus on adaptation rather than mitigation. As a result, mitigation is not being addressed enough during climate negotiation. Agriculture has been addressed through Nairobi Work Programme and NAPA. Since current efforts for greenhouse gas reduction are not sufficient for stabilizing the atmospheric system of the Earth to prevent climate change, the agriculture sector should also be considered for greenhouse gas reduction. For this, MRV for small farmers in developing countries and incentives for their mitigation efforts should be developed in agriculture sector. In addition, it is necessary to strengthen international cooperation for developing capacities for vulnerable countries and people to climate change.

An Empirical Study of Determinants of Customer Satisfaction of Banking Sector: Evidence from Bangladesh

  • The aim of this study is to determine the factors that affect customer satisfaction in the banking sector of Bangladesh because the economic growth and stability of a country depends on the soundness of its banking sector. The study tries to investigate and assess the quality of service on customer satisfaction in the banking sector. As a sample, data were collected from 382 respondents who were customers of 32 selected commercial banks of Bangladesh. A pre-structured questionnaire was used to collect the required data and information. OLS regression model and descriptive statistical tools were used to analyze data. The results of this study reveal that the quality of service (e.g., tangibility, reliability, and empathy) has a statistically significant impact on customer satisfaction. The results also show that there is a positive correlation between the customer satisfaction and service quality dimensions in the banking sector of Bangladesh. The present study finds that in the domestic banking industry the service quality dimensions (i.e., tangibility, reliability, and empathy) have significant positive impact on customer satisfaction. The findings of the present study suggest that Bank Supervisory Authority, Central Bank of Bangladesh, and Bank Management should give special emphasis to ensure maximum satisfaction of banks' customers.

The Economic Impact of Changing the Status of Korea to a Developed Country in WTO Negotiation (한국의 WTO 선진국 지위 전환에 따른 경제적 효과)

  • This study aims to estimate the economic effect of Korea's transition to a developed country in WTO negotiations. If Korea develops into an advanced country, it must give up many advantages in the agricultural sector. In particular, limiting the scope of sensitive items, giving up the selection of special items, and drastic tariff reductions are expected to have greater negative effects on the agricultural sector. According to research results, Korea's GDP rose slightly from 0.2 to 0.8 percent following the DDA settlement. Especially when China is classified as an advanced country along with Korea, Korea's GDP appears to be growing even more. On the other hand, damage is expected in most areas of agriculture. The trade deficit in the agriculture sector is expected to widen as output in the agricultural sector decreases, and import growth exceeds export growth. In the non-agricultural sector, there are no significant differences in the change in WTO status. However, if China is grouped together as an advanced country, the export growth rate of the Korean manufacturing industry appears greater.

Study on Reduction of Curtailment of Renewable Generation based on Green Hydrogen Sector Coupling (그린수소 기반 섹터 커플링 통한 재생에너지 출력제한 경감효과 연구)

  • The Korean government announced the "1st Basic Plan for the Transition to Hydrogen Economy" in 2021 and declared the establishment of a hydrogen industry ecosystem by 2040. To build a low-carbon power system, resources that can efficiently accommodate renewable energy are required, and green hydrogen is considered a potential solution. This study analyzed the economic feasibility of green hydrogen-based sector coupling to reduce curtailment of renewable generation in the Jeju power system by 2025 under the scenario of with or without HVDC#3. The result showed that HVDC#3 significantly reduced the frequency of curtailment from 16.1% to 3.0%. In addition, green hydrogen-based sector coupling was an economically feasible option as result showed an IRR of 4.86% when HVDC#3 was connected and 11.45% when it was not under the condition of achieving 50% curtailment reduction. This study shows that the higher the level of renewable energy deployment, the more delayed the HVDC connection between Jeju and the main land, and the lower the SMP, the more economically feasible the green hydrogen-based sector coupling is. Furthermore, this study suggests that the policy goal of completely reducing curtailment is not economically efficient.

  • Purpose - The purpose of this development the business model of the healthcare sector in order to promote patents satisfaction towards medical sector services improvement for the medical business model innovation to possess a competitive advantage in the medical and pharmaceutical industry. Research design, data, and methodology - Safety standard protocol from existing multidisciplinary literature is a process of theorization, which uses grounded theory methodology rather than a description of the data and the targeted phenomenon by using Jabareen (2009). The first task is to map the spectrum of food safety literature regarding the phenomenon in safety management. This process includes developing the implementation factors and other sources such as existing business models and practices into the protocol design. Results - The study suggests the conceptual framework to improve the safety management for patients' environmental sustainability performance. Conclusion - The business model may support the beneficial aspect to healthcare government's policymakers, hospital employees, and medical specialist who can apply the practical perspective of its value regarding an educational protocol. Originality/value - This study contributes to and extends our understanding of environmental sustainability performance, identifying the rationale for safety standards performance in the healthcare industry with suggested hybrid safety standards market consumer interconnector.

The Effect of An Investment in The Energy Sector of North Korea on North Korean Economy (에너지 부문의 대북투자와 북한경제)

  • The paper is concerned with, firstly, estimating the North Korean input-output table in which energy sectors like electricity and petro products are specified and, secondly, computing the effect of an investment in the energy sector on North Korean economy, by using the estimated input-output table and applying CGE analysis. The 4,000 million dollar investment on North Korean electricity industry produces 368 million dollar worth of output and 156 million dollar worth of value added. The 150 million dollar investment on petro industry creates about 20.5 million dollar worth of output and 9.65 million dollar worth of value added in North Korea.

An Overview of the Microfinance Sector in Bangladesh

  • Purpose - While microfinance institutions(MFIs) from Bangladesh, such as Grameen Bank, received worldwide recognition and the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006, however, there is a paucity of research that provided a comprehensive discussion on the characteristics of the microfinance industry. Hence, the aim of this paper is to discuss some important aspects of the microfinance sector in Bangladesh. Research design, data, and methodology - This study used secondary sources of data, such as annual reports of the Microcredit Regulatory Authority (MRA) and the World Bank database in its descriptive analysis. Results - This study found that Bangladesh has made remarkable progress in her socio-economic and economic development in the last few decades. It is also generally perceived that microfinance has placed significant contribution on such socio-economic development. While microfinance observed unprecedented growth domestically, however, the regulatory framework is still rather weak, and a majority of the MFIs are found to be concentrated in the well-off areas (e.g., Dhaka, Chittagong etc.). Conclusions - The findings are significantly important for the parties who are interested to know the microfinance sector in Bangladesh. To some extent, the findings of this study will provide policy implications that may benefit the industry.

  • Recently, many countries all over the world have been suffered from disaster caused by climate change. Especially in case of developed countries, the disaster is concentrated in the industry sector. In this research, we analyzed industrial vulnerable homogeneous hotspot for the climate change using spatial autocorrelation analysis on the south Korea. Homogeneous hot spot areas through autocorrelation analysis indicate the spatial pattern of areas interacted each other. Industry sector have responsibility of green house gas emissions, and should adapt to the climate change caused by greenhouse gas already released. So, we integrated the areas sensitive to mitigation option with the areas hardly adapt to climate change because of vulnerable infrastructure. We expected that the result of this research could contribute to the decision-making system of climate change polices.
