This paper presents the use of a Genetic Algorithm to find the optimal layout for the placement of garment patterns on a fabric of fixed width to minimize fabric waste. We developed a program to simulate garment pieces and their layout on a fixed-width fabric. Each piece in the order book is placed with 2 possible orientations: 0 degrees and 180 degrees. The efficiency is measured by the length of fabric used after all the patterns in the order book have been laid out. A comparison is made between the placement using our proposed genetic algorithm to that made by an expert human using our simulation program. The results from our experiments on various pattern designs indicate that our genetic algorithm can effectively be used to obtain highly efficient solutions, comparable to that done by an expert while using a reasonable amount of time. The algorithm can also be adapted for use in other areas related to optimal consumption of sheet material such as metal, paper, and leather.
BACKGROUND: Agricultural soils are vulnerable from contamination of heavy metal derived from industrial waste. Monitoring on heavy metals on agricultural soils around industrial complexes and evaluation on distributional state on the concentrations of heavy metals in soil have been carried out for problem assessment on soil condition. METHODS AND RESULTS: Soil samples of 1,200, were collected from sixty site of industrial complexes located Gyounggi, Chungbuk, Cheonbuk, and Gyoungnam provinces. Total concentration of Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, and As were analyzed. Heavy metal concentrations in most soil samples were below warning criteria, except 1 site of Pb, Ni, and As, separately. The comparison of mean values of heavy metal concentrations between soils around industrial complexes and paddy soils, showed similar levels of heavy metals, except Pb. The concentrations of lots of heavy metals were distributed between from warning criteria to one fifth level of warning criteria. However, in the case of Cu and Pb, more than 30% were distributed below one twenties level of warning criteria. These results were very similar with the distribution state of heavy metals in upland soils. The concentrations of heavy metals in surface soil and subsoil were similar among the heavy metals in soils around industrial complexes. CONCLUSION: The concentrations of heavy metals in soils around industrial complexes were distributed close to warning criteria. Long term and continous monitoring and evaluation on heavy metals in agricultural soils are required for food safety and sustainable soil management.
This research aims at the recovery of valuable resource and more efficient waste treatment through solving the problem of pyrolysis technique. At first, in order to raise the economical efficiency, the low temperature pyrolysis experiment was carried out at the temperature of $450^{\circ}C$, which is lower than the common pyrolysis temperature area ($500{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$). We could lower the reaction temperature and reduce the reaction time by using catalyst. Also we used indirect heat for the purpose of maintaining favorable anoxic condition. As a result, we could raise the recovery rate of the valuable copper and synthetic fuel oil. Furthermore, the by-products and flue gas could be treated more effectively as well. The flue gas passed through two stage neutralization tank, so that dioxin hardly occurs and other environment items are controlled fairly well to the environmental standard. Throughout this study, we produced the low temperature pyrolysis equipment (GTPK-001) as mentioned above, and we found out that the technique can be commercialized economically as well as environmentally friendly.
The production of biodiesel by transesterification of waste frying oil was conducted on various zeolite catalysts with different acidity and pore structure. $H^+$ ion exchanged MOR, MFI, FAU, and BEA zeolites were employed in the reaction with silicalite which has no strong acid sites. $H^+$ ion exchanged MOR(10) zeolite, which has more acid sites and stronger acid strength than other zeolites, exhibited the highest methyl esters yield as 95%. Dealumination to the HMOR zeolite induced decreasing of acid amount and acid strength. It brought about the decrease of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) yield. The yield increased linearly with enhancing of acid strength and increasing of amount of strong acid sites. The yields were independent on pore structure of the zeolites.
Taiwan has a typical marine climate featuring perennial high-temperature and dampness. This climate, together with the emission of various industrial corrosive waste gases in recent years, contributes a lot to the corrosion of metal materials. In this study, samples of carbon steel exposed to various atmospheres in Taiwan were analyzed to investigate the impacts of atmospheric factors on carbon steel corrosion. Carbon steel samples were collected from 87 experimental stations between 2009 and 2012. Statistical analysis was employed to investigate the correlations between the carbon steel corrosion situations and the atmospheric factors such as concentrations of sulfur dioxide or chloride, exposure time, rainfall, etc. The results indicate that for samples from industrial areas, the sulfur dioxide concentration and exposure time during fall and winter are significantly correlated to the condition of the carbon steel corrosion. However, for samples from coastal zones, the significant correlated factors are chloride concentration and wetting time during winter. The results of this study are useful for the development of carbon steel corrosion prediction models.
The generation of fly ash tends to increase yearly so that this is currently considered a big environmental concern, which requires appropriate treatment approaches. In this research the consolidation of incineration fly ash by the hot-press solvothermal reaction was investigated to provide an alternative process for the treatment and utilization of this waste material. Results showed that at reaction conditions of 52 K treatment, 20 ㎫ pressure and 60 minutes treatment time, the resulting consolidate exhibited a compressive ness strengths of 37-40 ㎫, a tensile strength of 6.5-7.0 ㎫ and a Rockwell hardness of 20-23 RH15W. These properties are comparable to the compressive ness strength of Portland cement which ranges from 30-40 ㎫ as well as with the tensile strengths of mortar, ganite, artificial lightweight aggregate and solidified high connote whose values are 2-2.5 ㎫, 5-9 ㎫, 5-10 ㎫ and 3-5 ㎫ respectively- Furthermore, by mixing fly ash with glass at 50% ratio and then subjecting to similar treatment conditions, a consolidate with even higher tensile strength of 12.5-13.3 ㎫ and hardness of 77-80 RH15W may be achieved.
A chemical heat pump based on the reversible reactions between metal chlorides and ammonia gas is attractive alternative to compression system and liquid absorption systems in cooling and refrigerating fields. The advantages of chemical heat pump are no regulatory constants due to CFC refrigerants, utilization of gas, industrial waste heat, electricity, fuel oil etc. as heat sources and wide applications to energy storage system, large-scale energy managements for industrial process. The scale-up of chemical heat pump from laboratory prototype to pilot plants necessitates the interpretation of system performance and evaluation of dynamic behavior in the chemical reactor. This study contains the prediction of performance of chemical refrigerator according to operating condition, the dynamic simulations through reactor modelling, which is used for the calculation of reactive medium temperature and the conversion variation with reactor cooling temperature, and the effect survey of block parameters on the power of refrigerator.

Peat humin(p-Humin) extracted from Canadian Sphagnum peat moss was packed in a column and removal of heavy metal ions such as Cd, Cu and Pb from aqueous solution under flow conditions was studied. The metal ions were removed not only from single-element solutions but also from a multi-metal solution. Column kinetics for metal removal were described by the Thomas model. For single-component metal solutions, the maximum adsorption capacities of the p-Humin for Pb, Cu and Cd were 138.8, 44.66 and 41.61 mg/g, respectively. The results of multi-component competitive adsorption showed that adsorption affinity was in the order of Pb $\gg$ Cu > Cd. The adsorbed metal ions were easily deserted from the p-Humin with 0.05 N $HNO_3$ solution. It is apparent that 95% of the heavy metal ions were recovered from the saturated column. This investigation provides possibility to clean up heavy-metal contaminated waste waters by using the natural biomass, p-Humin as an environmentally friendly and cost-effective new biosorbents.
In this study, distribution characteristics of dioxins in soils in Busan, Korea were investigated regarding different land use types. Soil sampling sites that distributed through the Busan city showed dioxin concentration ranging from 0.489 to $322.736pg-TEQ\;g^{-1}$ dry weight with a mean value of $26.257pg-TEQ\;g^{-1}$ dry weight. The mean dioxin concentrations of investigated soils ranged from 1.554 to $50.357pg-TEQ\;g^{-1}$ dry weight in consideration of each land use type. That in metal refinery sites with $50.357pg-TEQ\;g^{-1}$ dry weight was higher than any other sites, followed by waste incinerator sites with $44.285pg-TEQ\;g^{-1}$ dry weight. The majority of soil samples had the same dioxin congener profiling despite the different range of dioxin concentration. Octa-CDD was the major contributor among seventeen dioxin congeners with the range from 29.5 to 70.1% in real values. In contrast to real values, dioxin congener profiles in TEQ values were dominated by 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF which contributed about 35.3~43.8% to the total dioxin concentrations. It was judged by these results that penta-CDF was the major contributor of soil samples in Busan city. The mean ratio of PCDFs/PCDDs in real values was about 0.71, but that in TEQ values was, in contrast to it, approximately 3.03.
This study was performed to investigate the contents and leaching characteristics of hazardous wastes from the paint industry. In order to establish a hazardous waste list, samples from industrial discharge have been analyzed for 8 non-regulated inorganic hazardous substances (i.e., Sb, Ni, F, V, Ba, Zn, Be, Se). In more detail, hazardous waste samples from a total of 64 workplaces, e.g. manufacture, formulation, supply and use (MFSU) of coatings, adhesives, sealants and printing inks processing, have been chosen and analyzed. Contents and leaching tests for inorganic metal species in samples show that the non-regulated hazardous substances satisfy all the criteria, while quantitative analyses reveal that some samples of the discharged wastes exceeded the criteria proposed by NIER (National Instituted of Environmental Research). In conclusion, we expect the outcome of this study to align the classification system of hazardous waste management in South Korea with international legislations, and consequently contribute to reduce environmental pollution as well as health risks by toxic wastes.
