  • Purpose: This study used ESG grade, but defined AESG, adjusted to the size of a company and examines whether it can be used as an investment strategy. Research design, data and methodology: The analysis sample in this study is a company that has given an ESG rating among companies listed on the Korea Stock Exchange. We examine the results through portfolio analysis and Fama-macbeth regression analysis. Results: As result of examining the long-only performance and the long-short performance by constructing quintile portfolios, it was observed that a significant positive return was shown. It was observed that there was an alpha that could not be explained in asset pricing models. Also, AESG had a return prediction effect in the result of a Fama-Macbeth regression that controlled corporate characteristic variables in individual stocks. Next, we confirmed AESG's usage through various portfolio composition. In the portfolio optimization, the Risk Efficient method was the most superior in terms of sharpe ratio and the construct multi-factor model with Value, Momentum and Low Vol showed statistically significant performance improvement. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that it can be helpful in ESG investment to reflect the ESG rating of relatively small companies more through the scale adjustment of the ESG rating (i.e.AESG).

  • A trading system is a computer trading program that automatically submits trades to an exchange. Mechanical a trading system to execute trade is spreading in the stock market. However, a trading system to trade a single asset might occur instability of the profit because payoff of this system is determined a asset movement. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a trading system that is trade two assets such as a pair trading that is to sell overvalued assets and buy the undervalued ones. The aim of this study is to propose a relative value based trading system designed to yield stable and profitable profits regardless of market conditions. In fact, we propose a procedure for building a trading system that is based on the rough set analysis of indicators derived from a price ratio between two assets. KOSPI 200 index futures and S&P 500 index futures are used as a data for evaluation of the proposed trading system. We intend to examine the usefulness of this model through an empirical study.

  • Starting from 2010, blockchain technology, along with the development of artificial intelligence, has been in the spotlight as the latest technology to lead the 4th industrial revolution. Furthermore, previous research regarding blockchain's technological applications has been ongoing ever since. However, few studies have been examined the standards for classifying the blockchain economic ecosystem from a capital market perspective. Our study is classified into a collection of interviews of software developers, entrepreneurs, market participants and experts who use blockchain technology to utilize the blockchain economic ecosystem from a capital market perspective for investing in stocks, and case study methodologies of blockchain economic ecosystem according to application fields of blockchain technology. Additionally, as a way that can be used in connection with equity investment in the capital market, the blockchain economic ecosystem classification methodology was established to form an investment universe consisting of global blue-chip stocks. It also helped construct an intelligent portfolio through quantitative and qualitative analysis that are based on quant and artificial intelligence strategies and evaluate its performances. Lastly, it presented a successful investment strategy according to the growth of blockchain economic ecosystem. This study not only classifies and analyzes blockchain standardization as a blockchain economic ecosystem from a capital market, rather than a technical, point of view, but also constructs a portfolio that targets global blue-chip stocks while also developing strategies to achieve superior performances. This study provides insights that are fused with global equity investment from the perspectives of investment theory and the economy. Therefore, it has practical implications that can contribute to the development of capital markets.

  • This study develops a Korean R&D Scoreboard which has originated from the R&D Scoreboard in United Kingdom. The Scoreboard contains details of the R&D investment, sales, growth, profits and employee numbers for Korean companies which are extracted from company annual reports and key ratios calculated, with some movements over time. Companies are classified by the Korea Standard Industrial Classification. The Scoreboard contains 190 companies which consist of 100 largest companies and 30 middle-or small-sized firms listed in Korea Stock Exchange (KSE), and 30 ventures and 30 other firms listed in KOSDAQ. The overall company R&D intensity (R&D as a percentage of sales) is 2.1% compared to the international average of 4.2%. Korea has an unusually large R&D percentage of sales in IT hardware (4.9%) and telecommunication (3.7%). R&D intensity is positively correlated with company performance measures such as profitability, sales growth, productivity and market value. For largest companies listed in KSE and ventures listed in KOSDAQ, the ratio of operating profit to sales is greater for high R&D intensity companies. Sales growth is in proportion to R&D intensity for all companies. Plots of value added per employee or sales per employee vs R&D per employee rise together for the sectors studied, especially for the chemical sectors and automobile sectors, demonstrating a correlation with productivity. The average market value of high R&D companies in the KSE has risen more than 1.6 times that of the KOSPI 200 index. Given the correlation between R&D intensity and company performance and given that R&D is a smaller percentage of surplus (profits plus R&D) than international level (both overall and in several sectors), the challenges facing Korean companies are to maintain the leading position in IT hardware and telecommunication, and to increase the intensity of R&D in many medium-intensive R&D sectors where Korea has an average intensity well below international or US levels.

  • This paper analyzed the impact of alliances on the market value of the 106 bio-pharmaceutical companies listed on the KOSPI or KOSDAQ in Korea by using the 'Event study methodology'. Although general alliances did not impact the corporate value significantly, in the analysis corresponding to the alliance type, R&D alliances created positive value, as technology acts as an important factor for the alliance. Among the R&D alliances, 'Technology Transfer alliances', in particular 'Development Technology Transfer alliances', had a positive influence on the corporate value. We interpret these differentiated results as market tends to screen for types of alliances. Meanwhile, we confirmed that the possibility of a stock price increase before the alliance announcement is high by analyzing the impact of the timing of corporate alliance announcements on the company value. It can be inferred that the possibility of information leakage is high. This paper analyzes the impact of alliances for managers and practitioners seeking to create value for domestic bio-pharmaceutical companies, and suggests the need to prevent information leakages by establishing a suitable policy.

  • This study analyzed the Quality of Accounting Earning of Investor Relations(IR). For this, we utilized Book-Tax Difference Variability as the proxy of the level of the Quality of Accounting Earning. This study used 2,106 sample data from 2011 to 2016 on the listed firm on KOSPI(Korea Composite Stock Price Index). In short, the study results are as follows. Investor Relation(IR) has a negative relevance with Book-Tax Difference Variability, which agreed with the result of additional analysis using extra sample. According to these results, we can expect that Investor Relations(IR) firms will report more faithful Accounting Earning. This study makes the following fresh contribution to the field. The study result confirms how Investor Relation(IR) affects the Quality of Accounting Earning. We hope that this study will help the development of capital market.

  • This paper performed empirical tests of the validity of the pecking order theory which explains financing behavior of firms under information asymmetry. The results of regression analyses using the data of listed manufacturing companies in the Korean Stock Market from 1981 to 2010 have shown strong evidences supporting the pecking order theory. Especially regression coefficients of change of debt on funds deficit and control variables were found to be almost (+1) with statistically significance, which is interpreted as being consistent with the pecking order theory. Same results were found when I performed regression analyses by dividing the sample period into pre-currency crisis period, currency crisis period and post-currency crisis period and using 2 regression models. Change of tangible asset were found to function as collateral rather than reducing information asymmetry and as the firm size decreased, use of debt increased and as profitability increased use of debt decreased, which are consistent with the pecking order theory.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore financial investment knowledge related to multi-strategy, which is not generally shared. Through case studies, we will share it with the domestic hedge fund market. Since the era of full-fledged private equity hedge funds in Korea opens, many funds are created; however, reality is that there is a lack of diversity in strategies. Initially, it started with a simple stock long/short strategy, and various strategies such as mezzanine and alternative investments are in use but funds using multi-strategy are limited. This study aims to present an empirical application plan for hedge fund management strategies using a case study. It will specifically focus on process of achieving Absolute Return using the Multi Strategy technique actively used in securities firms' Prop Trading. With the results of this study, we intend to contribute to those fund managers and desired researchers who are utilizing multiple strategies in the hedge fund management to pursue Absolute Return and to help them strengthening their financial knowledge and competitiveness.

  • This paper investigate the volume-volatility and volume-return relationship in the Korean Treasury Bond futures market using daily price and volume data categorized by three trader type i.e. individual investor, institutional investor and foreign investor over the period of October 1999 through December 2005. Major results are summarized as follows: (i) The effect of volume on return was not different across the trader type. (ii) The effect of volume on volatility was not unidirectional across the type of investor. While unexpected sell of individual investor has positive effects on volatility, negative effects in the case of institutional investor. (iii) We cannot find the evidence of asymmetric response of volatility to shock in trading volume or net position. This result differs from that of Korean Stock Price Index 200 futures market which showed strong positive asymmetry. Finally, some limitations of this paper and direction for further research were suggested.

  • The global financial crisis, triggered by the subprime mortgage crisis in 2007, has put the world economy into the recession with financial market turmoil. I tested whether variables were cointegrated or whether there was an equilibrium relationship. Also, Generalized impulse-response function (GIRF) and accumulation impulse-response function (AIRF) may be used to understand and characterize the time series dynamics inherent in economical systems comprised of variables that may be highly interdependent. Moreover, the IRFs enables us to simulate the response in freight to a shock in the USD/JPY exchange rate, Dow Jones industrial average index, Dow Jones volatility, Chinese Import volatility. The result on the cointegration test show that the hypothesis of no cointergrating vector could be rejected at the 5 percent level. Also, the empirical analysis of cointegrating vector reveals that the increases of USD/JPY exchange rate have negative relations with freight. The result on the impulse-response analysis indicate that freight respond negatively to volatility, and then decay very quickly. Consequently, the results highlight the potential usefulness of the multivariate time series techniques accounting to behavior of Freight.
