  • Power conversion system must increase switching frequency in order to achieve small size, light weight and low noise. However, the switches of converter are subject to high switching power losses and switching stresses. As a result, the power system has a lower efficiency. In this paper, the authors propose an AC-DC boost converter of high efficiency by partial resonant switching mode. The switching devices in the proposed circuit are operated with soft switching and the control technique of those is simplified for switch to drive in constant duty cycle. The partial resonant circuit makes use of a inductor using step up and a condenser of loss-less snubber. Besides, by regenerating energy, that is charged in a loss less snubber condenser of a snubber adopted to a common circuit, toward an input source part, this circuit can get increased efficiency. as merit. The result is that the switching loss is very low, the efficiency and power factor of system is high. The proposed converter is deemed the most suitable for high power applications where the power switching devices are used.

  • A portable primary inductance standard set that includes a Maxwell-Wien bridge and a 10 mH standard inductor installed in a thermostat has been developed at KRISS. Two auxiliary resistance capacitance networks (analogous to a 'Wagner ground') provide excellent stability of the bridge balance and impose less strict requirements on the components of these networks. Removable capacitance and ac-dc resistance standards used in the bridge arms made it possible to reproduce 10 mH and 100 mH inductance values in the frequency range of 500 Hz to 3 kHz. From investigations of this standard and preliminary comparison with VNIIM (D. I. Mendeleyev Institute for Metrology), the results have demonstrated that the bridge can be used as a part of the transportable inductance standard with a measurement uncertainty within (1-3) $\mu$H/H at frequencies of 1 kHz and 1.6 kHz. The application of the bridge as a constituent part of the transportable standard gives us an opportunity to eliminate the influence of the standard inductors.

  • A novel parallel three-level zero voltage switching (ZVS) DC converter is presented for medium voltage applications. The proposed converter includes three sub-circuits connected in parallel with the same power switches to share load current and reduce the current stress of passive components at the output side. Thus, the size of the output chokes is reduced and the switch counts in the proposed converter are less that in the conventional parallel three-level DC/DC converter. Each sub-circuit combines one half-bridge converter and one three-level converter. The transformer secondary windings of these two converters are connected in series in order to reduce the size of output inductor. Due to the three-level circuit topology, the voltage stress of power switches is equal to $V_{in}/2$. Based on the resonant behavior by the output capacitance of power switches and the leakage inductance (or external inductance) at the transition interval, each switch can be turned on under ZVS. Finally, experiments based on a 2 kW prototype are provided to verify the performance of the proposed converter.

  • Interruption system with the transformer type superconducting fault current limiter(TSFCL) is proposed in this paper. The interruption system with a TSFCL is a technology that it maximizes the interruption function of a mechanical DC circuit breaker using a transformer and a superconducting fault current limiter. By a TSFCL, the system limits the fault current till the breakable current range in the fault state. Therefore, the fault current could be cut off by a mechanical DC circuit breaker. The Interruption system with a TSFCL were designed using PSCAD/EMTDC. In addition, the Interruption system with a TSFCL was applied to the DC test circuit to analyze characteristics of a current-limiting and a interruption operation. The simulation results showed that the Interruption system with a TSFCL interrupted the fault current in a stable when a fault occurred. Also, The current-limiting rate of the Interruption system with a TSFCL was approximately 69.55%, and the interruption time was less than 8 ms.

  • In this paper, a 50-kW high-efficiency modular fast charger for both electric vehicle (EV) and neighborhood electric vehicle (NEV) is proposed. The proposed fast charger consists of five 10-kW modules to achieve fault tolerance, ease of thermal management, and reduce component stress. Three-level topologies for both AC-DC and DC-DC converters are employed to use 600V MOSFET, resulting in ease of component selection and increase in switching frequency. The proposed three-level DC-DC converter with coupled inductor and its hybrid switching method can reduce the circulating current under wide output voltage range. A 50-kW prototype of the proposed fast charger was developed and tested to verify the validity of the proposed concept. Experimental results show that the proposed fast charger achieves a rated efficiency of 95.2% and a THD of less than 3%.

However, the switches of converter are subjected to high switching power losses and switching stresses. As a result of those, the power system brings on a low efficiency. In this paper, the authors propose a DC-DC boost converter of high power by partial resonant switch method (PRSM). The switching devices in a proposed circuit are operated with soft switching and the control technique of those is simplified for switch to drive in constant duty cycle. The partial resonant circuit makes use of a inductor using step up and a condenser of loss-less snubber. Also the circuit has a merit which is taken to increase of efficiency, as it makes to a regeneration at input source of accumulated energy in snubber condenser without loss of snubber in conventional circuit. The result is that the switching loss is very low and the efficiency of system is high. The proposed converter is deemed the most suitable for high power applications where the power switching devices are used.

  • This paper presents boost and buck and buck-boost DC-DC converter circuit topologies of high-frequency soft switching transition PWM chopper type DC-DC high power converters with a single auxiliary passive resonant snubber. In the proposed boost power converter circuits operating under a principle of ZCS turn-on and ZVS turn-off commutation schemes, the capacitor and inductor in the auxiliary passive resonant circuit works as the loss less resonant snubber. In addition to this, the switching voltage and current peak stresses as well as EMI and RFI noises can be basically reduced by this single passive resonant snubber. Moreover, it is proved that converter circuit topologies with a passive resonant snubber are capable of solving some problems of the conventional hard switching PWM processing based on high-ferquency pulse modulation operation principle. The simulation results of this converter are discussed as compared with the experimental ones. The effectiveness of this power converter with a single passive resonant snubber is verified by the 5kW experimental breadboad set up.

  • In this paper, proposes a novel AC-DC converter of high power factor and high efficiency by partial resonant method. The input current waveform in proposed circuit is got to be a discontinuous sinusoidal form in proportion to magnitude of ac input voltage under the constant duty cycle switching. Thereupon, the input power factor is nearly unity and the control circuit is simple. Also the switching devices in a proposed circuit are operated with soft switching by the partial resonant method. The result is that the switching loss is very low and the efficiency of system is high. The partial resonant circuit makes use of a inductor using step up and $L^2SC$ (Loss-Less Snubber Condenser). The switching control technique of the converter is simplified for switches to drive in constant duty cycle. Some simulative results and experimental results are included to confirm the validity of the analytical results.

  • In order to effectively protect electrical and electronic circuits which are extremely susceptible to lightning surges, multi-stage surge protection circuits are required. This paper presents the operational characteristics of the two-stage hybrid surge protection circuit in extra-low voltage DC power lines. The hybrid surge protective device consists of the gas discharge tube, transient voltage suppressor, and series inductor. The response characteristics of the proposed hybrid surge protective device to combination waves were investigated. As a result, the proposed two-stage surge protective device to combination wave provides the tight clamping level of less than 50V. The firing of the gas discharge tube to lightning surges depends on the de-coupling inductance and the rate-of-change of the current flowing through the transient voltage suppressor. The coordination between the upstream and downstream components of the hybrid surge protective device was satisfactorily achieved. The inductance of a de-coupler in surge protective circuits for low-voltage DC power lines, relative to a resistance, is sufficiently effective. The voltage drop and power loss due to the proposed surge protective device are ignored during normal operation of the systems.
