Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are a wide range of root-colonizing bacteria with the capacity to enhance plant growth and control plant pathogens. Here we review recent progress that indicate some PGPR strains release a blend of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that promote growth in Arabidopsis seedlings and induce resistance against Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora. In particular, the volatile components 2,3-butanediol and acetoin released exclusively from the PGPR strains triggered the greatest level of growth promotion and induced systemic resistance. Pharmacological applications of 2,3-butanediol promoted the plant growth and induced resistance, while bacterial mutants blocked in 2,3-butanediol and acetoin synthesis was devoid of growth-promotion and induced resistance capacities. The results suggested that the bacterial VOCs play a critical role in the plant growth promotion and induced resistance by PGPR. Using transgenic and mutant lines of Arabidopsis, we provide evidences that the signal pathway activated by volatiles from one PGPR strain is dependent on cyto-kinin activation for growth promotion and dependent on an ethylene-signaling pathway for induced pathogen resistance. This discovery provides new insight into the role of bacterial VOCs as initiators of both plant growth promotion and defense responses in plants.

Variations of dielectric and piezoelectric properties and associated phase transformation of <001> -oriented rhombohedral 0.92Pb (Zn$\sub$1/3/Nb$\sub$2/3/)O$_3$-0.08PbTiO$_3$ single crystals were investigated. The longitudinal strain level was found to abruptly increase at 15 kV/cm, corresponding to that where an induced phase appears within a multidomain matrix. Drastic decreases in the dielectric constant, transverse coupling, and transverse piezoelectric coefficient associated with the E-field induced phase were the result of increased crystal anisotropy in PZN-PT crystals. By contrast, the thickness coupling increased from 53 % at 0 kV/cm to 64 % at 45 kV/cm, also associated with this phase transition under the E-field. The measured dielectric and piezflelectric properties found for the induced phase state were nearly identical to those of <001> poled tetragonal (1-x)PZN-xPT (x>0.1) crystals. Based on these results, it is evident that the symmetry of induced phase is tetragonal.

Flexible roll forming allows profiles to have variable cross-sections. However, the profile may have some shape errors, such as, warping which is a major defect. The shape error is induced by geometrical deviations in both the concave zone and the convex zone. In the current study, flexible roll forming was modeled with FE simulations to analyze the shape error and the longitudinal strain distribution along the flange section over the profile. A distribution of analytically calculated longitudinal strains was used to develop relationships between the shape error and the longitudinal strain distribution as a function of the defined shape parameters for the profile. The FE simulations showed that the shape error is primarily affected by the deviations between the distribution of analytically calculated longitudinal strain and the longitudinal strain distribution of the profile. The results show that the shape error can be controlled by designing the shape parameters to control the geometrical deviations at the flange section in the transition zones.
The mutagenicities and antimutagenicities of butanol (PL I) and water (PL II) extracts from the filtrate of the cultured broth of Phellinus linteus were examined using the Ames/Salmonella test. No mutagenic activity of PL I and PL II was found in Salmonella typhimurium strains TA98 and TA100, either with or without S9 activation. In contrast, PL I and PL II showed inhibitory effects on the mutagenic activities induced by the directly-acting mutagens, 4-nitro-o-phenylenediamine (NPD) using the tester strain TA98 and sodium azide (NaN3) using the tester strain TA 100 in the absence of S9 mix. PLI and PL II also showed inhibitory effects on the mutagenicities of the indirectly-acting mutagens, 2-aminofluorene (2-AF) using the tester strain TA98 and benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) using the tester strain TA 100 in the presence of S9. These results suggest that P. linteus has an antimutagenic activity and may play a role in the prevention of cancer.
Six stains of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria were selected through germinating seed assay and root colonization assay. Among them, SKU-78 strain induced significant suppression of bacterial wilt disease in tomato and pepper plants. Seed treatment followed by soil drench application with this strain resulted in over 60% reduction of bacterial wilt disease compared with the control. It was suggested that SKU-78 strain activated the host defense systems in plants, based on lack of direct antibiosis against pathogen. According to Bergey's Manual of Systemic Bacteriology and 16S rDNA sequence data, SKU-78 stain was identified as Bacillus sp. SKU-78.

The potential probiotic of a total of 15 Bacillus species isolated from Korean soybean paste (doenjang) was evaluated. Among those tested, the CSY191 and CSY388 strains were selected as probiotic bacteria due to their acid and bile tolerance, respectively. These strains were classified as Bacillus subtilis based on morphological, physiological, and chemotaxonomic features as well as on phylogenetic analysis based on their 16S rDNA sequences. These strains CSY191 and CSY388 showed a significant survival with rate range of 30.0 to 58.3% and of 31.0% to 58.1%, respectively, under artificial gastric acidic conditions at pH 3.0. These CSY191 and CSY388 strains appeared to have high antimicrobial activity against Salmonella Typhimurium, Bacillus cereus and Listeria monocytogenes. Also, methanol extractions (surfactin-like compounds) of strain CSY191 and strain CSY388 activated RAW264.7 microphages and induced the production of nitric oxide (NO) in a concentration-dependent manner, respectively. Therefore, strain CSY191 and strain CSY388 can be used as potential probiotics.
Among 116 bacterial strains isolated from Korean fermented foods, one strain (SS-76) was selected for producing new oligosaccharides in a basal medium containing maltose as the sole source of carbon. Upon morphological characterization using scanning electron microscopy, the cells of strain SS-76 appeared rod-shaped; subsequent 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain SS-76 was phylogenetically close to Bacillus subtilis. The main oligosaccharide fraction B extracted from the culture supernatant of B. subtilis SS-76 was purified by high performance liquid chromatography. Subsequent structural analysis revealed that this oligosaccharide consisted only of glucose, and methylation analysis indicated similar proportions of glucopyranosides in the 6-linkage, 4-linkage, and non-reducing terminal positions. Matrix-assisted laser-induced/ionization time-of-flight/mass spectrometry and electrospray ionization-based liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry analyses suggested that this oligosaccharide consisted of a trisaccharide unit with 1,6- and 1,4-glycosidic linkages. The anomeric signals in the $^1H$-nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum corresponded to ${\alpha}$-anomeric configurations, and the trisaccharide was finally identified as panose (${\alpha}$-D-glucopyranosyl-1,6-${\alpha}$-D-glucopyranosyl-1,4-D-glucose). These results suggest that B. subtilis SS-76 converts maltose into panose; strain SS-76 may thus find industrial application in the production of panose.
IIn this study, used is the equivalent loading method based on the inherent strain to predict the welding deformation of panel members. Equivalent loads are computed from the inherent strain distribution around weld line, and then applied for the linear finite element analysis. Thermal deformation of panel members can be, of course, carried out through the rigorous thermal elasto-plastic analysis procedure but it is not practical in applying to predicting the welding deformation of large structures such as blocks found in a ship structure from view of computing time. The present equivalent load approach has been applied to flat plate model to verify the present approach, and to several curved plate models having the curvature in the welding direction to investigate the effect of the longitudinal curvature upon the weld-induced deformation. The results are compared with those by thermal elasto-plastic analysis. As far as the present results are concerned, it can be said that the present approach shows good agreement with the results by welding experiment and the rigorous thermal elasto-plastic analysis. The present approach has been also applied to predict the welding deformation of panel block as for application illustration to practical model.
Recently great efforts and investment have been made in order to develop a structural health monitoring technology using fiber optic sensors. Therefore, in this study, we have focused on the development of a fiber optic BOTDA (Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis) sensor system in order to measure strains distributed on large structures by an optical fiber. The fiber optic BOTDA sensor was constructed simply, with only two electro-optic modulators. The results of strain measurement tests of an optical fiber showed that the strain can be determined accurately from the Brillouin frequency shift measurement on the strain induced range of 10 m in the total fiber length of 4.8 kIn using 200 averaged signals. Also, the strain sensitivity of Samsung single mode fiber was 4.81 MHz/O.Ol % under the test. test.

A numerical method for analyzing non-isothermal, rigid-viscoplastic deformation problems has been presented. As an application, a stretch forming of sheet metals, including temperature effect, has been analyzed by a three-dimensional finite element method. Bishop`s step-wise decoupled method is adopted to solve thermomechanical coupling between deformation and heat transfer. Using the method, the effect of temperature on strain distribution during stretch forming is investigated. By comparison of the non-isothermal results with isothermal analysis, the importance of including temperature effects in the analysis of metal forming problems is emphasized. The predicted results were in good agreement with the existing experimental measurements at the different punch temperatures and dome heights investigated. It is also found that any increase of the punch temperature appeared to postpone the strain localization process by lowering the peak strain in the critical punch-sheet contact region and by normalizing strain distribution within the specimen.
