  • Modern people spend a lot of time indoors. Oil mist has a very fatal effect on the cook's health. Range Hood's filter plays a very important role in removing oil mist from kitchen. In this study, we applied coanda effect to increase the collection efficiency of filter. Original, Bottom, Slide Three shapes were simulated, and the two shapes were measured and compared using a wind tunnel tester. Pressure loss is measured below 2.0mmAq for all three filters, making them easy to use indoors. The simulation results were 15% for the original filter, 22% for the bottom filter, and 30% for the slide filter. The wind tunnel tester obtained 26% of the original filter and 30% of the slide filter. Research is needed to increase the collection efficiency by 50%.

  • In this study, indoor VOCs concentration emitted from floor and furniture was measured after the installation of floor and furniture in a real residence. With the measured data, prediction method and predication equations for indoor concentration of each VOCs and BTEX were developed. The following conclusions were drawn from this study. First, according to the predicted results of concentration decrease of BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m,p,o-xylene) after the installation of floor in a real residence, prediction equation can be expressed using exponential function. Second, in case of floor, more reliable prediction equation can be obtained by using cumulative value of indoor concentration than by using just hourly measured value directly. Indoor concentration of benzene can be expressed as $y=408.52(1e^{-00031{\times}time})$ with $R^2$ of 0.94 which is significantly high value. Third, toluene showed the highest concentration in case of furniture installation indoors, and it needed the longest time for concentration decrease. However, other substances except toluene showed constant concentration throughout the measurement period. Fourth, in case of furniture installation indoors, prediction equation of toluene concentration decrease is estimated to be $y= 3616.3{\times}e^{(-0.1091{\times}time)}+513.96{\times}e^{(-0.0006{\times}time)}\;with\; R^2$ of 0.95 which is significantly high value.

  • In recent days, navigation technology becomes more important as location based service (LBS) such as E911 and telematics are considered as attractive business fields. Commercial LBS requires that navigation system should be inexpensive and available anytime and anywhere - indoors and outdoors. If we consider these requirements, it is out of question that GPS is the most favorite system in the world. However, GPS has a serious problem. The one is that GPS does not operate indoors well. This is because GPS satellites are about 20,000km above the ground so that indoor signals are too weak to be tracked in GPS receiver. And the other is that vertical accuracy is less than horizontal accuracy, because of GPS satellites' geometry. To solve these problems, many researches have been done around the world since 1990s. This paper is also one of them and we will introduce an excellent solution by use of pseudolite. Pseudolite is a kind of signal generator, which transmits GPS-like signal. So it is same as GPS satellite in ground. In this paper, we will propose the integrated navigation system of GPS and pseudolite and show the flight test results using RC airplane to proof our navigation system. As a result, we could improve the vertical accuracy of airplane into the horizontal accuracy.

  • This study has been conducted to investigate corrosivity of carbon steel, Cu, Zn and Al for one year from Sept. 2003 to Aug. 2004. A model of ISO 9223-ISO 9226 that represents the relation between metal corrosions and environmental parameters was used for atmospheric corrosion evaluations. Environmental parameters for these evaluations are time of wetness(TOW), $SO_2$ and Chloride. Corrosion rates for four metals which are exposed indoors and outdoors were measured on five locations in Jeju Island; Gosan, Seogwipo, Seongsan, Chuna hill and Jeju city. The environmental factor of atmospheric corrosion of Jeju Island for $SO_2$ class is P0, a clean area. TOW as T3 and T4 indicates that Jeju has the characteristics of a tropical area. Chlorides class within 3 km from the coast show the features of costal area as S2 and S3 classes. Chuna hill show the features of woodland as a S1 class. In Corrosion classes of each site which was measured outdoors is higher than indoors. Gosan is the highest class as the rank of C5, and indicated that they're ranked as C3 or C4.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the mood states and concentration of students when they see the natural scenery indoors throughout the Free Semester Program (FSP) of middle school. The subjects were total 180 students comprised of 60 students in the group viewing natural scenery, 60 students in the group viewing urban scenery and 60 students in the control group from the first year of middle school located in Daejeon, and the experiment was carried out from September 3 to October 30, in 2018. The results showed that tension, depression, anger, fatigue and confusion were decreased and vigor was increased significantly in group viewing natural scenery compared to group viewing urban scenery and the control group. Ratings of 'pleasant,' 'natural,' and 'calm' were increased and concentration was also improved significantly in the group viewing natural scenery compared to the group viewing urban scenery and the control group. This indicates that positive effects can be anticipated on the improvement of mood states and concentration by developing indoor program viewing natural scenery for people who have difficulties in outdoor activities.

  • There is increasing evidence suggestion that passive smoking increases the risk of lung cancer and other disease, though the potential health effects of exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is a controversial subject. Since smoking in restaurant is prevalent in Korea, the concern on passive smoking exposure of non-smoking service-workers has been requested. ETS exposure of non-smoking service-workers at restaurant was assessed because they hare spent their times in restaurant indoors. The purpose of this study was feasibility of nitrogen dioxide($NO_2$) as exposure marker of ETS. The results of the study were as follows; 1. Average $NO_2$ concentrations in indoor and outdoor t restaurants were 57.1ppb(${\pm}12.4$) and 54.29ppb(${\pm}9.54$), respectively. Comparing office-workers, service-workers at restaurants were exposured highly. 2. The personal $NO_2$ measurement as exposure marker of ETS could cause the exposure error because $NO_2$ can be generated by combustion appliances in indoor. 3. Service-workers spent their most time(86.6%) in indoor. Mean time spent at restaurant indoors and at home was 9.4 hours and 10.9 hours, respectively. 4. Personal $NO_2$ levels correlated with indoor $NO_2$ concentrations of restaurant (r=0.70) and of their home (r=0.52) rather than of outdoor $NO_2$ concentration of restaurant (r=0.35). The cause of personal $NO_2$ exposure of non-smoking service-workers were considered as smoking of guests and combustion appliance indoors. 5. personal $NO_2$ exposures were estimated using Monte-Carlo simulation and time-weighted model. Estimated personal $NO_2$ level was 47.25ppb(${\pm}8.3$).

  • Objectives: This study was performed to evaluate the secular changes in indoor airborne dust or endotoxin levels in the dust from swine confinement buildings. Indoor levels were compared with the level at the exhaust outlet in order to examine the contribution potential of indoor dust to nearby ambient air dust. Methods: Comparisons were made on inhalable and respirable dust levels reported in 2002, 2012, and 2017 from 14, 10, and 36 swine fattening confinement buildings in Korea, respectively. This data was produced by the same research group. Levels of endotoxin adsorbed into inhalable or respirable dust were also compared. Samples of inhalable or respirable dust were collected indoors and at exhaust outlets from 17 swine fattening confinement buildings in 2019, and dust levels were compared between the indoor and the outlet. Results: The outlet inhalable dust level (0.111 mg/㎥) was approximately 19% of that from indoors, and the respirable dust level (0.033 mg/㎥) was approximately 74% of that from indoors. The outlet respirable dust levels were lower than the airborne fine dust levels in the towns where those farms are located. No significant difference was observed in the inhalable dust levels among the years examined, but the respirable dust level in 2017 (0.143 mg/㎥) was significantly lower than in 2002 (0.328 mg/㎥). The level of endotoxin in inhalable dust was significantly higher in 2017 (722 EU/㎥) than in both 2002 (75 EU/㎥) and 2012 (171 EU/㎥). Conclusion: Even though no apparent contribution from swine farm indoor dust to nearby ambient air dust was observed in terms of amount, a certain control strategy to reduce the production of airborne dust and endotoxin from swine farms is merited.

  • With recent surge of attention to heating and air conditioning energy consumption, the need for evaluating performance of heating and air conditioning energy is also on the rise. This research aims to propose daily-life based evaluation method as an alternative to existing one, as well as to apply the method in real life to prove its validity. The results are as following. 1) I studied temperatures preferred by persons indoors and appropriate level of temperature, and the results show that properties of such persons such as age is directly linked with pleasantness of the room, but the issue lies with the fact that such properties are not considered in existing performance evaluation of heating and air conditioning. 2) Daily life based evaluation proposed herein reflects such properties of persons indoors. It controls heating / air conditioning devices installed in the test bed with the same size as a real life room to get quantitative and visual performances in our daily life as well as simple temperature information. 3) To verify validity of daily life based evaluation, I conducted different evaluation sessions with and without a blind and also based on ages of persons indoors. Results based on properties of persons showed difference of 77.6%, leading to effective analysis of energy consumption pattern by heating / air conditioning devices. This research takes significance in that it comes with a new performance evaluation method based on real life, and I gather that further studies are required to develop more multilateral performance evaluation in order to verify and improve technology for reduction of energy consumption.
