In this paper, we propose a novel method for 3D reconstruction of an indoor scene using a multi-view camera. Until now, numerous disparity estimation algorithms have been developed with their own pros and cons. Thus, we may be given various sorts of depth images. In this paper, we deal with the generation of a 3D surface using several 3D point clouds acquired from a generic multi-view camera. Firstly, a 3D point cloud is estimated based on spatio-temporal property of several 3D point clouds. Secondly, the evaluated 3D point clouds, acquired from two viewpoints, are projected onto the same image plane to find correspondences, and registration is conducted through minimizing errors. Finally, a surface is created by fine-tuning 3D coordinates of point clouds, acquired from several viewpoints. The proposed method reduces the computational complexity by searching for corresponding points in 2D image plane, and is carried out effectively even if the precision of 3D point cloud is relatively low by exploiting the correlation with the neighborhood. Furthermore, it is possible to reconstruct an indoor environment by depth and color images on several position by using the multi-view camera. The reconstructed model can be adopted for interaction with as well as navigation in a virtual environment, and Mediated Reality (MR) applications.
In this paper, we propose a ground plane detection algorithm, using a new image processing method (IPD). To extract the ground plane from the color image acquired by monocular camera, we use a new identical pixel detection method (IPD) and an edge detection method. This IPD method decides whether the pixel is identical with the ground plane pixel or not. The IPD method needs the reference area and its performance depends on the reference area size. So we propose the reference area auto-expanding algorithm in accordance with situation. And we evaluated the proposed algorithm by the experiments in the various environments. From the experiments results, we know that the proposed algorithm is efficient in the real indoor environment.

The objective of this paper is to produce a weighted graph map for path-planning of an autonomous mobile robot(AMR) based on the measurements from a single ultrasonic sensor, which are acquired when the autonomous mobile robot explores unknown indoor circumstance. The AMR navigates in th unknown space by following the wall and gathers the range data using the ultrasonic sensor, from which the occupancy grid map is constructed by associating the range data with occupancy certainties. Then, the occupancy grid map is converted to a weighted graph map suing morphological image processing and thinning algorithms. the path- planning for autonomous navigation of a mobile robot can be carried out based on the occupancy grid map. These procedures are implemented and tested using an AMR, and primary results are presented in this paper.
In this paper, we compared several localization methods for indoor mobile robot navigation using a global ultrasonic sensor network. To estimate the pose of mobile robot in the sensor network, the range or range difference information with or without robot kinematics is used. Simulation results showed that the localization methods with robot kinematics have better performances.

This paper presents an algorithm of local map building for autonomous robot navigation using LASER range finder information. We develop a model of sensor output for a LASER range finder, and obtain an output data of the LASER range finder for a given environment. From the output data, a local map is obtained through the following procedures: (1) filtering of output data to remove noisy and unnecessary data, (2) comparison of filtered data with the original data to restore useful data, (3) thickening of the map obtained from the restored data, and (4) skeletonizing of the thickened map to get a final local map. Through some simulation studies, a map is obtained from the LASER range finder information for a given indoor environment, and is compared with the environment.
This paper presents a new local obstacle avoidance method for indoor mobile robots. The method uses a new directional approach called the Lane Method. The Lane Method is combined with a velocity space method i.e., the Curvature-Velocity Method to form the Lane-Curvature Method (LCM). The Lane Method divides the work area into lanes, and then chooses the best lane to follow to optimize travel along a desired goal heading. A local heading is then calculated for entering and following the best lane, and CVM uses this local heading to determine the optimal translational and rotational velocities, considering some physical limitations and environmental constraint. By combining both the directional and velocity space methods, LCM yields safe collision-free motion as well as smooth motion taking the physical limitations of the robot motion into account.

In this paper, we deal with performance evaluation of visual path following using 2D and 3D information. Visual path follow first teaches driving path by selecting milestone images then follows the same route by comparing the milestone image and current image. We follow the visual path following algorithm of [8] and [10]. In [8], a robot navigated with 2D image information only. But in [10], local 3D geometries are reconstructed between the milestone images in order to achieve fast feature prediction which allows the recovery from tracking failures. Experimental results including diverse indoor cases show performance of each algorithm.

Localization which estimates a robot's position and orientation in a given environment is very important for mobile robot navigation. Although low-cost sensors are preferred for practical service robots, they suffer from the inaccurate and insufficient range information. This paper proposes a novel approach to increasing the success rate of low-cost sensor-based localization. In this paper, both the previous and the current data obtained from the IR sensors are used for localization in order to utilize as much environment information as possible without increasing the number of sensors. The sensor model used in the monte carlo localization (MCL) is modified so that the accumulated range information may be used to increase the accuracy in estimating the current robot pose. The experimental results show that the proposed method can robustly estimate the robot's pose in indoor environments with several similar places.

This paper describes a grid mapping for a vision based mobile robot in uncertain indoor environment. The map building is a prerequisite for navigation of a mobile robot and the problem of feature correspondence across two images is well known to be of crucial Importance for vision-based mapping We use a stereo matching algorithm obtained by singular value decomposition of an appropriate correspondence strength matrix. This new correspondence strength means a correlation weight for some local measurements to quantify similarity between features. The visual range data from the reconstructed disparity image form an occupancy grid representation. The occupancy map is a grid-based map in which each cell has some value indicating the probability at that location ...
