  • Location-Based Service(LBS) is a service that provides a variety of convenience in life using location information that can be obtained by mobile communication network or satellite signal. In order to provide LBS precisely and efficiently, we have to need technologies such as location determination technology, platform technology and server technology first. In this study, we studied on how we can reduce the error on location determination of objects such people and things. Fingerprint location determination method was applied to this study because it can be used at current wireless communication infrastructure and less influenced by a variety of noisy environment than other location determination methods. We used the time of arrival(ToA) method in fingerprint location determination method. In order to confirm the performance of suggested method, we developed location determination test program with LAbVIEW 2010 and performed the test. According to indoor test results, the suggested method reduced the distance error by 24%, 34% and 19% respectively at indoor environment compared with deterministic kWNN and Rice Gaussian fingerprint methods.

  • Recently, location information services are gradually expanding due to the development of information and communication technology. RSSI is widely used to extract indoor and outdoor locations. The indoor and outdoor location estimation methods using RSSI are less accurate due to the influence of radio wave paths, interference, and surrounding wireless devices. In order to improve this problem, a distance estimation method that takes into account the wireless propagation environment is necessary. Therefore, in this study, we propose a distance estimation algorithm that takes into account the radio wave environment. The proposed method estimates the distance by learning RSSI input and output considering the RBF neural network and the propagation environment. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, the performance of estimating the location of the receiver within a range of up to 55[m] using a BLE beacon transmitter and receiver was compared with the average filter and Kalman filter. As a result, the distance estimation accuracy of the proposed method was 6.7 times higher than that of the average filter and Kalman filter. As shown in the results of this performance evaluation, if the method of this study is applied to location services, more accurate location estimation will be possible.

  • In ubiquitous environment a user can be provided with context-aware services based on his or her current location, time, and atmosphere. LBS(Location-Based Services) play an important role for ubiquitous context-aware computing. Because deployment and maintenance of this specialized equipment is costly, many studies have been conducted on positioning using only wireless equipment under a wireless LAN infrastructure. Because a CPS(Cooperative Positioning System) that uses the RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) between mobile equipments is more accurate than beacon based positioning system, it requires great concentration in its applications. This study investigates the relationship between nodes by analyzing a WiPS (Wireless LAN indoor Positioning System), a similar type of CPS, and proposes a improved WiCOPS-d(Wireless Cooperative Positioning System using node density) to increase performance by determining the convergence adjustment factor based on node density.

  • As an essential part of the urban transportation system, precise perception of the traffic flow parameters at the traffic signal intersection ensures traffic safety and fully improves the intersection's capacity. Traditional detection methods of road traffic flow parameter can be divided into the micro and the macro. The microscopic detection methods include geomagnetic induction coil technology, aerial detection technology based on the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and camera video detection technology based on the fixed scene. The macroscopic detection methods include floating car data analysis technology. All the above methods have their advantages and disadvantages. Recently, indoor location methods based on wireless signals have attracted wide attention due to their applicability and low cost. This paper extends the wireless signal indoor location method to the outdoor intersection scene for traffic flow parameter estimation. In this paper, the detection scene is constructed at the intersection based on the received signal strength indication (RSSI) ranging technology extracted from the wireless signal. We extracted the RSSI data from the wireless signals sent to the road side unit (RSU) by the vehicle nodes, calibrated the RSSI ranging model, and finally obtained the traffic flow parameters of the intersection entrance road. We measured the average speed of traffic flow through multiple simulation experiments, the trajectory of traffic flow, and the spatiotemporal map at a single intersection inlet. Finally, we obtained the queue length of the inlet lane at the intersection. The simulation results of the experiment show that the RSSI ranging positioning method based on wireless signals can accurately estimate the traffic flow parameters at the intersection, which also provides a foundation for accurately estimating the traffic flow state in the future era of the Internet of Vehicles.

We converted the probability value to logarithmic scale value because using the sum of k probability values is not suitable to be applied to weight determination. In order to confirm the performance of suggested method, we developed location determination test program with Visual Basic 6.0 and performed the test. According to indoor and outdoor test results, the suggested stochastic method reduced the distance error by 17%, 18% and 9% respectively at indoor environment and 25%, 11% and 4% at outdoor environment compared with deterministic NN, kNN and kWNN fingerprint methods.

  • Location information will become increasingly important for future Pervasive Computing applications. Location tracking system of a moving device can be classified into two types of architectures: an active mobile architecture and a passive mobile architecture. In the former, a mobile device actively transmits signals for estimating distances to listeners. In the latter, a mobile device listens signals from beacons passively. Although the passive architecture such as Cricket location system is inexpensive, easy to set up, and safe, it is less precise than the active one. In this paper, we present a passive location system using Cricket Mote sensors which use RF and ultrasonic signals to estimate distances. In order to improve accuracy of the passive system, the transmission speed of ultrasound was compensated according to air temperature at the moment. Upper and lower bounds of a distance estimation were set up through measuring minimum and maximum distances that ultrasonic signal can reach to. Distance estimations beyond the upper and the lower bounds were filtered off as errors in our scheme. With collecting distance estimation data at various locations and comparing each distance estimation with real distance respectively, we proposed an equation to compensate the deviation at each point. Equations for proposed algorithm were derived to calculate relative coordinates of a moving device. At indoor and outdoor tests, average location error and average location tracking period were 3.5 cm and 0.5 second, respectively, which outperformed Cricket location system of MIT.

  • The huge success of location-aware applications has called for the rapid development of an alternative positioning system to the global positioning system (GPS) for indoor localization based on existing technologies, such as 802.11 wireless networks. This paper proposes the Wireless MAC Processor Positioning System (WMPS), which is a localization system running on off-the-shelf 802.11 Access Points and based on the time-of-flight ranging of users' standard terminals. This paper proves through extensive experiments that the propagation delays can be measured with the accuracy required by indoor applications despite the different noise components that can affect the result: latencies of the hardware transreceivers, multipath, ACK jitters and timer quantization. Key to this solution is the choice of the Wireless MAC Processor architecture, which enables a straightforward implementation of the ranging subsystem directly inside the commercial cards without affecting the basic DCF channel access algorithm. In addition to the proposed measurement framework, this study developed a simple and effective localization algorithm that can work without requiring any preliminary calibration or device characterization. Finally, the architecture allows the measurement methodology to be adjusted as a function of the network load or propagation environments at the run time, without requiring any firmware update.

  • This paper proposed indoor location recognition method based on RSSI(received signal strength indication) using the LVQ network. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, we performed experiments, and then compared to the conventional triangularity measurement method. In the experiments, we set up the system to the laboratory, divided the 40 section, and installed 6 nodes as a reference node. We obtained the log-normal path loss model of wireless channels, RSSI converted into the distance. The distance values used as the input of LVQ. To learn the LVQ network, we set the target values as section indices. In the experiments, we determined the optimal number of subclass, and confirmed that the success rate of training phase was 96%, test phase was 91%.

  • The general way to use a triangulation method is based on PTMP communication between an object and wireless modules in an environment, which is established by more than three wireless modules, to recognize the location of an object. Thus, this method has a problem that the PTMP-based system can only be applied in an environment where the wireless infra is already established. In order to solve this problem, the PTP communication schemes have been proposed but they are insufficient to generalize because they lack specific verification. In this paper, problems of an existed location estimation algorithm based on PTP communication are analyzed, and we propose a location estimation algorithm of a fixed object that satisfyies the condition of a single receiver being substituted to multiple receivers. A location estimation system we designed and implemented using CSS wireless communication modules to evaluate the proposed algorithm. We verify, by experimental results, that the optimum moving interval for the location estimation is 3m in indoor environment of $10m{\times}16m{\times}1m$.

  • In this paper, we propose a method for estimating the error of the Ultra-Wideband (UWB) distance measurement using the channel impulse response (CIR) of the UWB signal based on machine learning. Due to the recent demand for indoor location-based services, wireless signal-based localization technologies are being studied, such as UWB, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. The constructive obstacles constituting the indoor environment make the distance measurement of UWB inaccurate, which lowers the indoor localization accuracy. Therefore, we apply machine learning to learn the characteristics of UWB signals and estimate the error of UWB distance measurements. In addition, the performance of the proposed algorithm is analyzed through experiments in an indoor environment composed of various walls.
