Forests have been considered one of the most important ecosystems on the earth, affecting the lives and environment. The sustainable forest management requires accurate and timely information of forest and tree parameters. Appropriately interpreted remotely sensed imagery can provide quantitative data for deriving forest information temporally and spatially. Especially, analysis of individual tree detection and crown delineation is significant issue, because individual trees are basic units for forest management. Individual trees in aerial imagery have reflectance characteristics according to tree species, crown shape and hierarchical status. This study suggested a method that identified individual trees and delineated crown boundaries through adopting gradient method algorithm to amplified greenness data using red and green band of aerial imagery. The amplification of specific band value improved possibility of detecting individual trees, and gradient method algorithm was performed to apply to identify individual tree tops. Additionally, tree crown boundaries were explored using spectral intensity pattern created by geometric characteristic of tree crown shape. Finally, accuracy of result derived from this method was evaluated by comparing with the reference data about individual tree location, number and crown boundary acquired by visual interpretation. The accuracy ($\hat{K}$) of suggested method to identify individual trees was 0.89 and adequate window size for delineating crown boundaries was $19{\times}19$ window size (maximum crown size: 9.4m) with accuracy ($\hat{K}$) at 0.80.
A methodology of the integrating the similar color circle search of the spectral data and segmentation of the height data is developed. The method is then applied to study areas, and the results by IKONOS, LIDAR and data fusion are verified with the ground truth, and examined in terms of the accuracy. Results show that with the data fusion the accuracy are improved by about 15% in most of the study areas. The methodology for the detection of individual tree stands by data fusion is explored, and the utility of combinatorial use of the spectral and the height information is demonstrated.
Mounted in aircraft, LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) technology uses pulses of light to collect data about the terrain below. The main objective of this study was to extract reliable the individual tree and analysis techniques to facilitate the used LiDAR data for estimating tree crown diameter by measuring individual trees identifiable on the three dimensional LiDAR surface. In addition, this study can be quantitative analysis of individual tree through the canopy parameter.
As the necessity of forest conservation and management has been increased, various forest studies using LIDAR data have been actively performed. These studies often utilize the tree height as an important parameter to measure the forest quantitatively. This study thus attempt to apply two representative methods to estimate tree height from airborne LIDAR data and compare the results. The first method based on the detection of the individual trees using a local maximum filter estimates the number of trees, the position and heights of the individual trees, and the mean tree height. The other method estimates the maximum and mean tree height, and the crown mean height for each grid cell or the entire area from the canopy height model (CHM) and height histogram. In comparison with the field measurements, 76.6% of the individual trees are detected correctly; and the estimated heights of all trees and only conifer trees show the RMSE of 1.91m and 0.75m, respectively. The tree mean heights estimated from CHM retain about 1~2m RMSE, and the histogram method underestimates the tree mean height with about 0.6m. For more accurate derivation of diverse forest information, we should select and integrate the complimentary methods appropriate to the tree types and estimation parameters.
Urban trees play an important role in absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, improving air quality, mitigating the urban heat island effect, and providing ecosystem services. To effectively manage and conserve urban trees, accurate spatial information on their location, condition, species, and population is needed. In this study, we propose an algorithm that uses a high-resolution urban tree cover map constructed from deep learning approach to separate trees from the urban land surface and accurately detect tree locations through local maximum filtering. Instead of using a uniform filter size, we improved the tree detection performance by selecting the appropriate filter size according to the tree height in consideration of various urban growth environments. The research output, the location and height of individual trees in human settlement over Suwon, will serve as a basis for sustainable management of urban ecosystems and carbon reduction measures.
The number of trees to be removed trees (ART) in the environmental impact assessment is an environmental indicator used in various parts such as greenhouse gas emissions and waste of forest trees calculation. Until now, the ART has depended on the forest tree density of the vegetation survey, and the uncertainty of estimating the amount of removed trees has increased due to the sampling bias. A full-scale survey can be offered as an alternative to improve the accuracy of ART, but the reality is that it is impossible. As an alternative, there is an individual tree detection using aerial image (ITD), and in this study, we compared the ARTs estimated by full-scale survey, sample survey, and ITD. According to the research results, compared to the result of full-scale survey, the result of ITD was overestimated by 25. While 58 were overestimated by the sample survey (average). However, as the sample survey is an estimate based on random samples, ART will be overestimated or underestimated depending on the number and size of quadrats.

Water is critical to the health and productivity of fruit trees. Efficient monitoring of water stress is essential for optimizing irrigation practices and ensuring sustainable fruit production. Short-range sensing can be reliable, rapid, inexpensive, and used for applications based on well-developed and validated algorithms. This paper reviews the recent advancement in fruit tree water stress detection via short-range sensing, which can be used for irrigation scheduling in orchards. Thermal imagery, near-infrared, and shortwave infrared methods are widely used for crop water stress detection. This review also presents research demonstrating the efficacy of short-range sensing in detecting water stress indicators in different fruit tree species. These indicators include changes in leaf temperature, stomatal conductance, chlorophyll content, and canopy reflectance. Short-range sensing enables precision irrigation strategies by utilizing real-time data to customize water applications for individual fruit trees or specific orchard areas. This approach leads to benefits, such as water conservation, optimized resource utilization, and improved fruit quality and yield. Short-range sensing shows great promise for potentially changing water stress monitoring in fruit trees. It could become a useful tool for effective fruit tree water stress management through continued research and development.
LiDAR(Light Detection and Ranging) with digital aerial photograph can be used to measure tree growth factors like total height, height of clear-length, dbh(diameter at breast height) and crown projection area. Delineating crown is an important process for identifying and numbering individual trees. Crown delineation can be done by watershed method to segment basin according to elevation values of DSMmax produced by LiDAR. Digital aerial photograph can be used to validate the crown projection area using LiDAR. And tree height can be acquired by image processing using window filter$(3cell\times3cell\;or\;5cell\times5cell)$ that compares grid elevation values of individual crown segmented by watershed.
Airborne Lidar (light detection and ranging) can be an effective alternative in forest inventory to overcome the limitations of conventional field survey and aerial photo interpretation. In this study, we attempt to develop methodologies to identify individual trees and to estimate tree height from airborne Lidar data. Initially, digital elevation model (DEM) data representing the exact ground surface were generated by removing non-ground returns from the multiple-return laser point clouds, obtained over the coniferous forest site of rugged terrain. Based on the canopy height model (CHM) data representing non-ground layer, individual tree heights are extracted through pseudo-grid method and moving window filtering algorithm. Comparing with field survey data and aerial photo interpretation on sample plots, the number of trees extracted from Lidar data show over 90% accuracy and tree heights were underestimated within 1.1m in average at two plantation stands of pine (Pinus koraiensis) and larch (Larix leptolepis).

In this paper, fall detection using individual wearable devices for older people is considered. To design a low-cost wearable device for reliable fall detection, we present a comprehensive analysis of two representative models. One is a machine learning model composed of a decision tree, random forest, and Support Vector Machine(SVM). The other is a deep learning model relying on a one-dimensional(1D) Convolutional Neural Network(CNN). By considering data segmentation, preprocessing, and feature extraction methods applied to the input data, we also evaluate the considered models' validity. Simulation results verify the efficacy of the deep learning model showing improved overall performance.
