  • Historically, commerce was a significant factor in the proliferation and development of Buddhism, which is especially manifest in the cult of the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara. Iconographic and textual evidence testifies that maritime trade on the Indian Ocean played a fundamental role in the formation of Avalokiteśvara worship. The sea was also a major conduit through which elements of the Avalokiteśvara faith were transmitted from India through China to Korea and Japan, the easternmost ends of the Silk Road. These elements include Avalokiteśvara's role as a maritime savior, oceanic symbolism, and the concept of the bodhisattva's worldly abode, Potalaka. Cultic sites dedicated to maritime safety were established at important transport hubs in East Asia. Due to China's strategic location on the Silk Road, as well as its cultural influence, the most important cultic sites were founded in China, first on the Shandong Peninsula, then in the southern Jiangnan region, in present-day Zhejiang Province. Especially notable is the role that Korean seafarers played in this process by assisting monks in search of the Dharma, establishing temples, and transmitting religious beliefs across the ocean. The present study focuses on the role that maritime figures played in the cultural exchanges between Korea, China, and Japan examined through Avalokiteśvara faith. By this, it aims to demonstrate how Korean seafarers inherited and continued the traditional relationship between commerce and Buddhism, while extending the Maritime Silk Road to the "East Asian Mediterranean."

  • Global robust diagnostic models are established based on MOM of GFDL to study the circulation in the world ocean. The horizontal grid sizes 1/2 degree, and the vertical water column is divided into 21 levels. The hydrographic data are taken from Levitus et al.(1994) and the wind stress from Hellerman and Rosenstein (1983). Based on the model results the horizontal volume, heat and salt transports across some representative sections are calculated. The preliminary results show that Though the cross-equator volume transports in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans are all small, the heat transports across equator in the Atlantic are northward. This is clearly a result of the southward flow of the North Atlantic Deep Water and the northward compensating warm flow in the upper layer. The annual mean of the cross-equator heat transport in the Pacific Ocean from the present model is significantly lower than that calculated by Philander et at. (1987). This might indicate the importance of the Indonesian Throughflow in the heat transport in the Pacific Ocean. Our calculation shows that the heat transport through the Indonesian Archipelago is 0.5 PW, which is comparable with the poleward heat transport in the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The difference in heat transports across the sections 5 and 6 demonstrates the important role of the Agulhas Current in the heat balance of the world ocean.

  • Spatial moment analysis has been performed on the concentration of the first species in a multispecies solute transport in porous media. Finite difference numerical technique was used in obtaining the solute concentration. A constant continuous source of contaminant was injected at the inlet of the domain. Results suggest that the decaying of solute mass increases as the magnitude of mean fluid velocity increases. The dispersion coefficient is highly time dependent under decaying of solutes with a complex behavior of mixing of solutes. The solute mobility and mixing varies non-linearly with time during its initial period, while the same ceases with higher decay rates of the first species much faster.

  • In this study, Caenanthura engimatica (Kensley and Reid, 1984) is newly reported from Korea along with detailed description and illustrations. This species can be characterized by the following features: cephalon has a rostrum extending as long as anterolateral lobes; pereonites 4-6 have shallow middorsal pits; the mandible palp has 2 articles; article 1 of the mandible palp is twice longer than article 2; and the maxillipedal palp has 1-3 fused and 4-5 fused articles. This is the first report of C. engimatica beyond Arabian Gulf, the type locality, and Indian Ocean. Additionally, we proposed a revised key to known species of the genus Caenathura Kensley, 1978.

  • In Korea, deap-sea fishing industry plays an important role in a food industry. However, it is in a difficult situation because of the more competitive business environment. Therefore, there is a need to restructure the deap-sea fishing industry by scraping superannuated ships. This paper is designed to present scrap programs for deap-sea fishing industry of Korea. We performed ratio analysis to evaluate financial performance of fishing companies and then applied a mixed integer programming (MIP) model to identify optimal schedule for scraping. The results of the financial ratio analysis indicates that it is legible to provide governmental aid to Atlantic trawl, Northern Pacific trawl, and Indian ocean trawl with minimum required rate of return (MRR) of 3%, and the Atlantic strip fishing industry is qualified to receive the governmental aid with MRR value of 5%. Furthermore, by applying the MIP model to develop scrap planning, we demonstrate how our model can be used to restructure the deap-sea fishing industry of Korea.

  • This study investigates the reason why the barotropic vorticity structure prevails vertically in response to the enhanced convection associated with the boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation over the central Indian Ocean. The relative vorticity tendency analysis for a 2.5-layer simplified model demonstrates that the barotopic vorticity structure is predominant due to the following two factors: 1) vertical easterly shear on the meridional gradient of barotropic divergence (which induces generation of barotropic vorticity twice larger than that of baroclinic vorticity); and 2) vertical easterly shear on the meridional gradient of baroclinic divergence (which appears only in relation to the generation of barotropic vorticity). The percentage of contribution by each term to barotropic and baroclinic vorticity tendency equations is presented.

  • The monsoon front lies on East Asian region, but it gradually propagates to the north during the boreal summer. The equivalent potential temperature (EPT) reveals the thermodynamical features of air masses and monsoon front. Therefore, this study considered the thermodynamical EPT and dynamical wind fields to clarify the peculiarity of East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) variations in June and July, respectively. Western North Pacific subtropical high (WNPSH) and Okhotsk sea high (OSH) both play the crucial role to interannual variations of EASM frontal activity and amount of rainfall. The OSH is important in June, but the WNPSH is key factor in July. Furthermore, the OSH (June) is affected by North Atlantic tripolar sea surface temperature (SST) pattern and WNPSH (July) is influenced by North Indian Ocean SST warming.

  • Tanzania is a coastal state on the western Indian Ocean in Africa. In an artisanal or small scale fishery, the combination of large numbers of fishers and landing places, mixed gears and migrant fishers makes fisheries management an often complex task. Lack of capital, low level of technology, poverty and high cost of transport are major socio-economic problems in Tanzanian fisheries. The combined approach of community-based management and provision of education and training for extension workers and fishers themselves are required. It is also necessary to build the capacity of fisheries institutions to meet the human resources development challenge.
