In ship's structure, deck and bottom plate are main strength member subjected to the inplane load due to longitudinal bending, i.e. tensile and/or compressive load. The deck and bottom plate are subdivided into many plate members by stiffeners and girders longitudinally and transversely. Since the plate members are thin, it is likely to be collapsed under compressive load, and when we consider the local strength of deck and bottom, the plate members play an important role in the longitudinal strength. Therefore the precise analysis of their compressive ultimate strength is required for the optimal design of ship's structures. In this paper, the modified analytical method using the incremental form of principle of virtual displacement is introduced to determine the compressive ultimate load of plate members. The results by the present method is satisfactory, and the present method is more effective and economical than the finite element method.

The material and geometrical nonlinear finite elment analysis of UHPFRC 50M composite box girder was carried out. Constitute law in tension and compressive region of UHPFRC and HPC were modeled based on specimen test. The accuracy of nonlinear FEM analysis was verified by the experimental result of UHPFRC 50M composite girder. The UHPFRC 50M segmental composite box girder which has 1.5% steel fiber of volume fraction, 135MPa compressive strength and 18MPa tensile strength was tested. The post-tensioned UHPFRC composite girder consisted of three segment UHPFRC U-girder and High Strength Concrete reinforced slab. The parts of UHPFRC girder were modeled by 8nodes hexahedron elements and reinforcement bars and tendons were built by 2nodes linear elements by Midas FEA software. The constitutive laws of concrete materials were selected Multi-linear model both of tension and compression function under total strain crack model, which was included in classifying of smeared crack model. The nonlinearity of reinforcement elements and tendon was simulated by Von Mises criteria. The nonlinear static analysis was applied by incremental-iteration method with convergence criteria of Newton-Raphson. The validation of numerical analysis was verified by comparison with experimental result and numerical analysis result of load-deflection response, neutral axis coordinate change, and cracking pattern of girder. The load-deflection response was fitted very well with comparison to the experimental result. The finite element analysis is seen to satisfactorily predict flexural behavioral responses of post-tensioned, reinforced UHPFRC composite box girder.
The use of non-linear analysis of structures in a functional way for evaluating the structural seismic behavior has attracted the attention of the engineering community in recent years. The most commonly used functional method for analysis is a non-linear static method known as the "pushover method". In this study, for the first time, a cyclic pushover analysis with different loading protocols was used for seismic investigation of curved bridges. The finite element model of 8-span curved bridges in plan created by the ZEUS-NL software was used for evaluating different pushover methods. In order to identify the optimal loading protocol for use in astatic non-linear cyclic analysis of curved bridges, four loading protocols (suggested by valid references) were used. Along with cyclic analysis, conventional analysis as well as adaptive pushover analysis, with proven capabilities in seismic evaluation of buildings and bridges, have been studied. The non-linear incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) method has been used to examine and compare the results of pushover analyses. To conduct IDA, the time history of 20 far-field earthquake records was used and the 50% fractile values of the demand given the ground motion intensity were computed. After analysis, the base shear vs displacement at the top of the piers were drawn. Obtained graphs represented the ability of a cyclic pushover analysis to estimate seismic capacity of the concrete piers of curved bridges. Based on results, the cyclic pushover method with ISO loading protocol provided better results for evaluating the seismic investigation of concrete piers of curved bridges in plan.
The paper is concerned with the elasto-plastic and geometrically nonlinear analysis of shell structures using an improved degenerated shell element. In the formulation of the element stiffness, the combined use of three different techniques was made. They are; 1) an enhanced interpolation of transverse shear strains in the natural coordinate system to overcome the shear locking problem ; 2) the reduced integration technique in in-plane strains to avoid the membrane locking behavior ; and 3) selective addition of the nonconforming displacement modes to improve the element performances. This element is free of serious shear/membrane locking problems and undesirable compatible/commutable spurious kinematic deformation modes. In the formulation for plastic deformation, the concept of a layered element model is used and the material is assumed von Mises yield criterion. An incremental total Lagrangian formulation is presented which allows the calculation of arbitrarily large displacements and rotations. The resulting non-linear equilibrium equations are solved by the Netwon-Raphson method combined with load or displacement increment. The versatility and accuracy of this improved degenerated shell element are demonstrated by solving several numerical examples.

An engineering method is suggested to calculate the applied load versus crack extension in the elastic-plastic fracture. The condition for an increment of crack extension is set by a critical increment of crack-up opening displacement(CTOD). The ratio of the CTOD increment to the incremental crack extention is a critical crack-tip opening angle(CTOA), assumed to be constant for a material of a given thickness. The Dugdale model of crack-tip deformation in an infinite plate is applied to the method, and a complete solution for crack extension and crack instability is obtained. For finite-size specimens of arbitrary geometry in general yielding, an approximate generalization of the Dugdale model is suggested so that the approximation approaches the small-scale yielding solution in a low applied load and the finite-element solution in a large applied load. Maximum load is calculated so that an applied load attains either a limit load on an unbroken ligament or a peak load during crack extension. The proposed method was applied to three-point bend specimens of a carbon steel SM45C in various sizes. Reasonable agreements are found between calculated maximum loads and experimental failure loads. Therefore, the method can be a viable alternative to the J-R curve approach in the elastic-plastic fracture analysis.

Kim et al.(I999) presented a non-linear finite element formulation of spatial ocean cables using multiple noded cable elements. The initial equilibrium state of ocean cables subjected to self-weights, support motions, and current forces was determined using the load incremental method and free vibration analysis were performed considering added mass, In this paper, the methods to generate regular and irregular waves and calculate wave forces due to these waves are discussed and challenging example problems are presented in order to investigate dynamic non-linear behaviors of ocean cables subjected to wave loadings.
This paper studied the probability of pounding occurred between decks and abutments of a long span high-pier continuous rigid fame bridge subjected to ground motions with local soil effect. A pounding probability analysis methodology has been proposed using peak acceleration at bedrock as intensity measure (IM) for multi-support seismic analysis. The bridge nonlinear finite element (FE) models was built with four different separation distances. Effect of actual site condition and non-uniform spatial soil profiles on seismic wave propagating from bedrock to ground surface is modelled. Pounding probability of the high-pier bridge under multi-support seismic excitations (MSSE) is analyzed based on the nonlinear incremental dynamic analysis (n-IDA). Pounding probability results under uniform excitations (UE) without actual local site effect are compared with that under MSSE with site effect. The study indicates that the required design separation length between deck and abutment under uniform excitations is larger than that under MSSE as the peak acceleration at bedrock increases. As the increase of both separation distance between deck and abutment and the peak acceleration, the probability of pounding occurred at a single abutment or at two abutments simultaneously under MSSE is less than that under UE. It is of great significance considering actual local site effect for determining the separation distance between deck and abutment through the probability pounding analysis of the high-pier bridge under MSSE.

In this study, material nonlinear finite element program is developed to analyze reinforced concrete shell of arbitrary geometry considering tension stiffening effects. This study is capable of tracing the load-deformation response and crack propagation, as well as determining the internal concrete and steel stresses through the elastic, inelastic and ultimate ranges in one continuous computer analysis. The cracked shear retention factor is introduced to estimate the effective shear modulus including aggregate interlock and dowel action. The concrete is assumed to be brittle in tension and elasto-plastic in compression. The Drucker-Prager yield criterion and the associated flow rule are adopted to govern the plastic behavior of the concrete. The reinforcing bars are considered as a steel layer of equivalent thickness. A layered isoparametric flat finite element considering the coupling effect between the in-plane and the bending action was developed. Mindlin plate theory taking account of transverse shear deformation was used. An incremental tangential stiffness method is used to obtain a numerical solution. Numerical examples about reinforced concrete shell are presented. Validity of this method is studied by comparing with the experimential results of Hedgren and the numerical analysis of Lin.
This study is concerned with the analysis of the forming characteristics of radial-forward extrusion. Angle between radial and forward extrusion, gap height, and friction factor are considered as important design factors to affect forming characteristics in radial-forward extrusion. The rigid-plastic finite element method is adopted to analyze the effects of design factors on forming loads. The incremental rates of loads are nearly constant except the deformation zone from radial to forward extrusion. The smaller angle induces lesser force increment, therefore forming load increases as the angle increases. Maximum load also increases as gap-height decreases and friction factor increases.

Incremental forming path to manufacture a thick concave steel plate using the line array roll set is designed. To find the optimum forming path, the forming processes are simulated by the finite element method. A general-purpose commercial software, MSC MARC is used. A modeling with 8-node hexahedral elastic-plastic solid is performed to predict accurate springback and the analysis process was composed of 18 passes. The proposed forming paths are verified through experiments carried out in the prototype line array roll set. It is found that the process can be successfully applied to the fabrication of the dual curvature ship hull plate.
